Craft This D&D Wilderness Terrain Board with House DM

- My current campaign has been calling for quite a few wilderness encounters and I felt as though it was finally time to upgrade my terrain boards. I've been using many large XPS square boards for encounters in my Dungeons and Dragons campaign and this feels like a much better solution for my terrain storage concerns.
Come craft with House DM and make some minimalist wilderness terrain for your D&D campaign!

12:59 is a beatiful scene
Thank you! Can’t wait to use that encounter in a session.
Nicely done, and super useful. Very cool
Thank you! I think so too.
You can get round wood or plastic cake display discs at your local dollar store. The 10"-13" are more common but I've seen bigger (15" ?). Not only do they make an excellent template to cut out the foamboard but you can also glue the cut foamboard to the cake disc for a rigid, non-warping, base for your terrain. I think I paid $1.50 each for mine. I used the wood versus the plastic.
You know what, that’s a really fricken good idea. I hadn’t even thought of that. This foam one has been great but it does have a verrrrrrry slight warm to it. Nothing that affects gameplay, but enough for the perfectionist in me to cringe a bit.
I’ll look for those next time I go in. Thanks Liam!
Modpodge does/n't help against warping. It's a sealing agent which keeps the most from sucking into your material. Just the way you want to look at it, it's all good 😊 If you're using as much moist as you do, you're quite correct in the use of modpodge.
Sweet guide.
Thanks thommc!
It's like making pizza without cooking in the oven
Truth. All oregano lol.
Love the “heavy and useless” statement / visual. Lol
😂
I am curious, where can I go to find info about how these terrain boards are used? I have seen them a few times now from different youtuber DMs and I am interested in how they are actually used because to me it seems it will limit options for the battlefield.
Hi Triumph! Great question! I got the idea for this type of terrain from the Professor on Dungeon Craft. I also have a video on my channel titled Try These 3 Encounters For Dungeons and Dragons where you can see how I use my dungeon tile board in the first example. I haven't made a video showing how I use this wilderness board but I have a short that uses it.
I have found that when I have massive boards, if I don't make the monsters particularly dynamic in their movement capabilities, combat kind of gets locked down to one spot. And thus, having a small board like this is good enough. Keep in mind with this wilderness board, I don't differentiate between close, near, and far distances. I just use general distances measured with something like a tape measure. Hope that helps!
How did you do the stone terrain one with all that texture?
Exact same process minus the flock. Just carved into the dollar store foam core with a ballpoint pen and add paint 👍🏼
@@HouseDM nice. Thanks for replying! Do you have recommendations for brands and colors of paints, for some who is completely new to this? Or mostly the same paints used in this video, to taste?
@@mrtheasley sure can! Literally buy the cheapest paints you can find. I use craft store coupons and usually buy hella black and gray paint. You can also buy them from amazon and I got some links in the description but you can often get better deals elsewhere. I snag a couple of craft smart brand paints too. Usually I use tan, suede, brick, and grey. Honestly kinda just grab whatever catches your eye. Those craft smart paints are real inexpensive and Walmart even carries them. Sometimes a little color with a dry brush looks amazing. Welcome to the crafting world! 🤘🏼
