      Guys I have wanted a dog my whole life and now it's finally got a chance of happening. It would be helpful if you could answer a few questions about king Charles. First of all, I have a pet hamster, so would the dog be constantly trying to eat it? Also how would I be able to prevent a dog from putting my hamster in danger? Also my dog would be on its own for 6 hours a day, is that ok or is it not good enough. Lastly I'm wondering if dogs chew wires and if so how would I prevent it?

      1. King charles were originally bred as hunting dogs. They may be gentle but they are capable of rough play. They might accidentally kill your hamster even if they don't intend to. I don't think their intention is to "eat" it. They just want to hunt or play.
      2. Your hamster will have to be caged at all times to ensure its safety. King charles won't try to break into the cages.
      3. King charles are prone to separation anxiety. They prefer the company of their humans than other things. They hate being alone. 2 hours is long for them, but of course, you can always use positive reinforcement to get them used to your absence. I bring home treats for them when I have to work longer hours, so they have something to look forward to.
      4. Get wire protectors. They're not expensive. I've had 3 King charles and none are interested in chewing wires after their teething stage is over (3-4 months old) so I don't think this is a big issue. I buy them deer bones and pig trotters to keep them occupied. It also helps with the separation anxiety thing.
      They're awesome dogs. Very loving, friendly, and cheerful to everybody. I have other breeds but my heart goes to king charles always.

      @@intjapan thank you so much for taking the time to answer. My mum is set on a king Charles spaniel rn lol. She is also working from home due to the coronavirus and she might be for the rest of her job but the only reason I asked you about leaving them home alone is in case my mum can't work from home anymore. We just need to figure out the finances of a dog and the overall best breed (which we are both almost sure on) and then we can take a puppy home after 12 years of wanting one! Again thanks so much for your help.

      Hate? Where? In this video? As an cavalier owner he's spot on. Our dog hates it when we leave and we have to crate her otherwise she will literally use the house as a chew toy. She does like to "hunt" as we learned when she would let go of a baby bird she found. We left a gate open once and she ran and was so excited to smell and seek. Although her friendly side helped cause she ended up waiting at a house around the corner and was happy to do a sleep over with those strangers (haha). She can be a good "guard" dog because she loves to bark and gets excited by anyone at the door (or seen approaching)... But once they are in she's loving them and getting pet and licking.

    My cavalier will be a lap dog all day or a wild dog all day... he does whatever I’m doing, however he gets the zummies often at night when I’m calm. I take him to state parks and he will pull me the entire 10 miles. The gentle leader collar helped with pulling, however he is extremely active. I wouldnt have any other dog breed! He is the sweetest, silkiest, and most beautiful dog ever!

    • @tegsbanana
      @tegsbanana 3 роки тому

      @wandering_about dog trainers don’t generally help with pulling on leashes. I have an insane dog and we have trained her for years, but she is a farm dog, and she can’t fact the help that she pulls on walks. We have a gentle leader for her too. The gentle leader is basically like a harness. It just gently pulls her so she won’t pull as much. Also, please don’t judge people on ways they train they’re their animal. As long as theirselves and their dog are happy and healthy, it’s ok! The gentle leader looks like a muzzle, but it definitely isn’t. Please do not judge people for things like this, especially since their dog sounds like it’s completely fine.

    My childhood dog was a tri-color Cavalier King Charles Spaniel named Choco. He was the kindest mannered and most affectionate dog I've ever encountered. Everyone who met him loved him, and he loved everyone he met . Like a lot of dog breeds however King Charles Spaniels have a litany of health issues that they are prone to. By age three he was deaf, by age four he had a heart murmur which only got worse, by age five we had to put drops in his eyes every day otherwise he would have gone blind. By age nine he had Cushings disease, back issues and many others. We cared for Choco as best as we could and always took him to the vet when we thought something was wrong and gave him the medicine they prescribed. He had an exceptional quality of life given his various ailments. In the end he died at 10 years old which is actually quite a good age for his breed. I love Choco and always will. I would however encourage people considering this breed to think about getting a mutt. They are far longer lived and will suffer less genetic issues that affect their quality of life. Rest in peace Choco.

    My Jelly lived to age 10, and I was completely broken hearted when she died. My goal was to get her to her tenth birthday, so I was happy about that. She was absolutely the sweetest dog we’ve ever had. She’d just sit on my chest and stare into my eyes like she was saying “I love you more than anything”. She had heart problems and suffered from bouts of syncope where she’d faint. It was scary for her and for us! I’ve never spent so much at the vet as I did on Jelly. Never have I had such a devoted dog. I’m besotted. I’m her person and she adores me and our staffy. She’s super affectionate and she’s so beautiful. We have occasional accidents in the house due to her being caged but we’re slowly getting there. If it suits your lifestyle as Will says, they are just perfect.

    My cavi Annie who passed away in early April was the sweetest, most gentle dog there was. She never had any heart problems, either.
    She was good with peoples cats, and my bearded dragon (just let him walk all over her,). And she and my boy Benny (Cavalier x Maltese x Bichon) got along so well ever since I brought her home a year after him. She loved for 11 years- not nearly enough time for me, I’d choose forever if I could.
    Dogs are just perfect.

    I think it's really important to know about their health risks and problems... It can be hard, but in my opinion it's much better to get sad right now instead of facing those problems on practice, which would be much harder. A good percentage of them might get syringomyelia, which makes their skull a bit small for their brains, and I think it also affects their spine... It brings them frequent pain and treatments not always work. Some Cavaliers had to die because of it. The signs of that disease are not always obvious either, sometimes it might be excessive head scratching, etc. And that's not the only disease they're likely to have...

      Exactly I was looking for this problem and I couldn't find it anywhere.
      It's an overbred type of dog that people should be encouraged NOT to get, until the overbreeding is sorted out.
      I cannot believe there are still people saying you should make more of them and raise them.

    • @Widdekuu91
      @Widdekuu91 Рік тому +1

      @@DVZZZZ But if you'd taken a healthy breed, there would've beeen no issue.
      Imagine if you had to create a new baby, you were allowed to pick the eyes, nose, everything. Just a human baby.
      And God said; 'If you want, you can give it really deep, dark eyes and a cute facial expression.....but in return, it will suffer daily and needs nasty treatment and might have to get the skull sawed open at the back to be able to have a normal life.."
      Would you then wholeheartedly say; 'Sure...no problem. I care more about those eyes."
      Or would you feel guilty? Because if you change 'baby' to 'puppy' then here we are.

    We picked up our Spaniel up from a local shelter... of the 50 dogs in the place barking, yipping, jumping and running... All the other families and kids were fighting over those pups. Meanwhile, when we saw her, she was sitting quietly, still, with those big sweet eyes, just looking at us. Love at first sight. 7 years ago. She's been more like having a house cat than a dog. Just laying and loving. Amazing companion for our now 3 year old. During apartment life she never made a sound, which was perfect. Never once woke the baby. :-) We've heard her bark 10 times in all those years. Not 10 outbursts... 10 individual barks. She wiggles and whines as soon as one of us comes home with that sweet smiling face.
    Now I sit waiting to hear back from the vet to see if she has cancer or not. She's, at best guess, 9 years old at this point. :-( Sweet little thing.

    He's spot on with this. Reason #1 is absolutely correct. We could not leave our cav for more than 4-5 hours without her going off the rails. And our cav was an excellent guard dog, not quite barking at falling leaves, but would start barking when the mail carrier was a good 4-5 houses down the street and we could not hear anything. Literally a lap dog. Literally.

    Thanks for this video. I am a cavalier owner of 9 years and looking to get a second. Your number one reason for not getting a KC cavalier is so important. They absolutely can NOT be left alone for more than a few hours at a time. If you have to leave a dog home all day every day while at work, please do not get a cavalier. It is painful for them to be alone. But on the other hand, they are easy to take with -- and other people are usually very happy to see them. If you get two or more you can leave them longer. I do not agree that they do not need exercise, though. They do -- not as much as a big dog, but remember they were bred to run along on the hunt as well as to be lap dogs. My cav walks between 2-4 miles a day and does very well on 6 mile hikes -- even at 9 yrs old. Cavs do better when they get enough exercise.

      This is why I'll never own one again. I rescued one and after researching them- they need to stop being bred. It's cruel. Their adorable faces and small head shapes that they've been bred to have- have created a skull that is literally too small to hold their brains. This causes them to have a disease that is very common for the breed and very painful for them. This one thing alone turned me off to the breed which of course is not their fault. But it's awful that they have health problems because we want them to look a certain way.
