  • After getting the Knucklehead up and running again, all was great. She runs perfectly, fun, smooth, fast. All was well except for that topend oil line spewing oil. One of the fittings was worn out. So, here goes a new set of hardware for that line.

    Teflon strings on his banjo, chrome loving flats on his wrench,
    the delicate touch of a surgeon, for that work of art on his bench.
    For 'blood' loss is bad for aesthetics, it's weepage offendeth the eye,
    & if left to it's oozing devices, some bearing upstream may run dry.
    Whence metal may touch fellow metal, dry faces could meet in the dark,
    so ignoreth these leaks at thy peril, & wait for your bearings to bark . . .

    Merry Xmas to All and Happy New Year. I sat down to add up all the hours I wrenched on my bike this year Mike and came up with 62 hours give or take an hour. Shop rates in my area are $150/hr. Oh, here's a quick thought about the one-piece push rods from the MoCo: cost reduction in production. If you can save ten cents per unit spread over 500,000 + units, and then keep doing it, the shareholders are happy. And we all know what THAT'S about!

    Mike I do believe a better explanation for why HD doesn't have adjustable pushrods or tappets is what it always is, MONEY! Its much cheaper to manufacture a solid piece of metal than it is to manufacture a pushrod thats adjustable, more moving pieces, more cost to machine. Plus its much easier for them on a assembly line to drop in a solid piece of metal thats already color coordinated to where it goes and doesn't need to be adjusted. Once they have the math on how long a pushrod has to be to take up half the hydraulic lifters travel, the same as you'd adjust them to, its a a simple wham bam thank you man, its done , just drop em in and go unto the next task on the production line. We all know the factory doesn't care about whats better, only whats cheaper!

Wish I was able to send a picture. Just wanted to be clear. Can I just thread that hole and put a button cap machine screw in it? Thanks Mike and Merry Christmas. Gotcha. Its a ball on the side of the outer kicker gear. It originally lined up with the slot on the inside of the early type throwout bearing. It's absence is about as important as its presence was. Don't sweat it. You'll be fine without it. Honest.

I own a fire suppression company 25 years. Started it from scratch. I m a pro with Teflon tape. I pulled them and dope taped them. The fittings don't leak. It was the pressed fitting. this oil line feed should be on the shovelhead also, a 2 into 1 oil feed to both heads. I know there is aftermarket oil supply lines available but in my opinion, too many fittings to leak, which is probably the reason the mo-co does not use them

    Merry Christmas everybody, I enjoy the videos, I’ve been fighting my 83 shovel, I have a front exhaust lifter that keeps bleeding down even after replacing it with a new one. there Jim’s big wheel lifters, any ideas why only one lifter would be bleeding down ?

    • @pacificmike9501
      @pacificmike9501  Рік тому +2

      The front exhaust lifter is usually the most troublesome. It's the farthest one from the oil supply and pushes the pushrod at the sharpest angle. Remove the pushrods and lifter blocks and blow out the passages in the crankcase that oil them. When you reinstall the lifters, make sure the holes in the lifter bodies face in. The front lifters should have their holes facing in, toward each other and the same thing with the lifters in the rear lifter block. Maybe there's dirty old oil? If there is, change the oil and filter. Run a little while and change it again. That should clean it up.

    Question. Hey Mike, I am redoing my 1972 FLH transmission. Electric only. When I took the outside cover off the throwout bearing came off. There's a small spring and BB bearing that goes in the shaft. Lost the little BB that sits on the spring. The parts Book or manual book doesn't have anything on it. Searched the inter web. Do you have any idea where I can get that little bearing? Hope you can help.Thanks and have a Merry Christmas!

    • @pacificmike9501
      @pacificmike9501  Рік тому +1

      I think you are speaking of the center adjusting screw. If that is the case, it is an aftermarket adjusting screw with a ball and spring in it. They do fall apart. Buy a standard adjustment screw without the ball and spring, install it and live happily ever after. Seriously, they fell apart. You should be just fine. That ball won't get the chance to do any damage.

    It looked like you were using the regular white plumbers Teflon tape instead of the orange type that is petroleum resistant? Is there some reason I'm missing for that? I use orange Teflon tape everywhere on my FLH just in case some petroleum product gets on the fasteners. One thing's for sure, having that Teflon lubricating the threads sure makes it easier to get a tight, leak-free connection. Sure beats plumber's dope :-)

      @Mike--WA7QZR Рік тому

      You only need it for fittings that come into contact with oil & gasoline. I don't use it on everything. Like you, I like lithium grease for gaskets, washers & the like. I should have said I use it on all my gas & oil connections, where appropriate. Oh, almost forget, those banjo fittings are really cool looking. You did a real good job with those :-)

    • @Mike--WA7QZR
      @Mike--WA7QZR Рік тому +1
