Vehicles with the same 2.0 Engine should be very similar, and for the 2.3L engine as well, please feel free to post and let me know how this video compares for the 2.3L, they should be close.

I found the easiest way is to go through the passenger headlight area as well, do not need to remove a bunch of accessories. Be careful not to crack the heater hose that is attached to the small nipple on the thermostat. OEM is made of plastic (semi flexible) and is brittle from the heat cycles. Very easy to crack and the new replacement line is aluminum (not flexible) and not at all fun to replace.
This video showed me how to replace my thermostat on a 2011 Ford Transit Connect. Thanks for the video!!!
AND the engineers who designed this didn't care anything about the repair guy. Very very difficult job. I've got big hands and wow it was a tough job.
Lol that's Mazda for you. In any case the "Mazda" 2.0 is extremely reliable with proper maintenance. Oh, pop off the spark plug boots periodically and check to see if there's oil around your plugs. The valve cover gaskets tend to fail on these every 100k or so but it's an easy job compared to the thermostat(make sure to use an OEM replacement... same with the motor mount on the passenger side. While it's all a PITA to fix these little things, that's about the only problems these engines have.
Before anyone tries this repair, PLEASE read through the comments carefully because there’s some bad advice being given. You do NOT have to touch the power steering pump, you do NOT have to lift the engine or loosen the motor mount or pull the coolant tank, etc. If you have the right extensions for your 1/4 ratchet you’ll be able to reach the three 8mm screws with no problem.
Did it this way. Thanks
@@bodomchildrenof No prob! Glad it worked out.
Alldata actually calls for removing intake

@@brianaa7573 Sold the car awhile ago. The rotting rocker panels was the final straw.
2008 Focus SE 2.0 in USA. I just changed the thermostat NOT removing the power steering pump, headlight, grille, or radiator. This one did not have the sensor. The hoses came off the nipples with much struggle, but I managed. Getting to the 8mm screws was easy with a 1/4" ratchet and extention; and a telescoping magnet so as not to drop the screws.
I did today as well. was hard but possible. lost a screw though so I went to autozone and found a replacement. Long nose pliers and 90 degree pliers made all the difference
Is the thermostat can remove to its housing?
@@bashim05 What? Your english makes no sense. The black plastic housing has the thermostat inside of it. You can reuse the housing if you only get a new thermostat, but make sure there are no cracks or scratches on the sealing surface and get a new gasket so it does not leak. The thermostat and housing is only 30 dollars from autozone (if you have the model without the coolant temperature sensor in the housing)
Haha sorry for my english! I got your point..
Joseph Kohn how to know if it has a sensor or not? Without taking it apart, if possible.
Will be doing this job this Friday. Thanks for the video; there are a few amateurs with vids on here who are pulling off the coolant reservoir, getting under the car, pulling off the serpentine belt, and every other lunatic thing.
There's almost always a better way. For my brother's 2007 Ion starter, they wanted us to pull off the manifold to get at it. An extension, a U joint, and way less effort and the job was done.
2009 ford focus. Took me 1 1/2 hours to do. Quality lube wanted $750. $250 for part and $500 for labor. Bought the part for $28 and did the labor myself. Took out the front headlight, drained and removed the power steering resolver, and removed the hoses and thermostat. Pretty easy, and I am not a mechanic.
gamer007able wish u posted a video! What video did u watch or what did u look up that really helped you?
Did your replacement thermostat have a sensor connector? There are two for this model, and apparently some have a sensor module built onto the thermostat housing. I am trying to figure out which one i need to buy.
@@MajickPalindrome I think the only sensor is the Cylinder Head Temp Sensor for the 09 Focus (I have the same car). Looks at the replacement thermostat, it doesn't appear to have any electrical connection for a sensor....
Vigo The Carpathian my question exactly! Did u find out?
Bro you literally copied and pasted this comment from Reddit lol
Well done... just used the same procedure to replace a thermostat on a 2.3 L...
Have never seen so many different ways to do one thing! This looks a lot like my 2011 so I am hoping it's the same for mine. Some guides are saying to remove the engine mount, intake manifold, ps pump ... wow
Thank you!! Did it just as you demonstrated, except pulled the stat off first to better reach the hose clamps as I don't yet have long angled pliers. Kind regards
all your clients will do it them self. thx for the vid
Thank you your video was very helpful people have been trying to RIP me off for this and it's bs wish you were here to help . your a life saver 😊 I have a 2004 ford focus zx3 hatchback needs housing .thermostat .but mechanics here think I'm stupid because I'm female. Lol I know a little about cars ive had my car for 15 years know alot about it on a fixed income not much money disability but they just want to they and rob me never gonna happen . take care .
THis job's not as easy as people are showing you it is lot more involved than what the camera shows
thanks for the video . I did mine in about a hour . found the best way was to remove the fan and you had plenty of room to get to the bolts . side note . my thermostat was stuck open ..my car was idling up and down will sitting at a light . after this fix that is gone . I did get a thermostat code as well . I think the computer was trying to make up for not seeing the right heat on the cylinders ..valve cover is next..
Haha yah just did the valve cover as the plugs were full of oil when i went to replace the overhead cylinder temp sensor since mine runs cold outside of sitting at idle for 5+ minutes. Next... the thermostat 😑
did this today without removing anything first. get long needle nose pliers and 90 degree needle nose pliers, will help a lot. a 5 or so inch socket extension and a magnet to not drop a bolt.
I get to do this tomorrow 😂😂😂
Thank you for this video it help me alot
this is my job for tomorrow ^^
Thank you sir!
Very helpful, thank you
I understand the new thermostat may not open when needed if you do not purge the system as you are adding coolant.
Trying this today...
Thanks for sharing your knowledge, if you check out other people's videos. You may notice it's not as easy as you clearly show. They show you have to remove most of the cooling system and parts of the power steering. Anyways thank you for sharing your knowledge once again.
That's because they weren't using the proper extensions and such. It's accessible with the perfect sized extensions and swivel end.
A cotter pin removal tool works good for removing stuck hoses. Good video, about to replace mine that sticks open on first warm up and sets a code. Did not know that fails the emissions test.
Nomad I Just failed mine today because of this issue. and the check engine light wasn't on until it got really warm today! Bad timing to take it into the emissions place! Should I buy the part and ask a trustworthy mechanic to replace and possibly repair/replace hoses housing?
This video was spot on and better than the process the manual was going to have me do. Saved a lot of work. Very tight space to work, but with the right tools and skill i did it but it was not easy. Take it to the shop i think. Ask them about your hoses.
Best way is through the passenger side headlight. You're welcome.
great, now i just gotta pull the grille off... lol
BIG ROB I’m sure you have it done already but on my ford it’s just held by the bolts on top and can be removed. No grille removal needed
Dennis: Did you make a Video???
@@XXXX-jo7ws no but I have a thread on focus fanatics. www.focusfanatics.com/threads/easy-duratec-thermostat-replacement.810309/
That bitch took me 5 1/2 hours.
Thanks for posting the video. I had a P0128 code on my 2005 Focus. I also had a bad engine cylinder temperature sensor. I changed the thermostat with the help of watching your video. Problem solved.
hi , I have the same code and indicates chances are the thermostat is the culprit. I also wondered about the cylinder head temp sensor.....my temp guage is staying very low (suspect because t-stat is stuck open). The gauge is still eradict though even when the car is warmed up (heat coming out of vents)....so might be the Cylinder head temp (CHT) sensor?? Did you replace both the T-stat and CHT sensor at the same time?
@@macker0077 I have the same code...did you guys replace both?
@@racequad9 Replaced the thermostat and all is well.
@@macker0077 so you didn't replace the CHT/ECT sensor?

hi, Great Video... I got a 2008 Focus with a 2.3 I think.. would the process be the same? Or what might my differences be?.. Thanks
thank ford te tip, jelp a lot
I'm trying to get my thermostat replaced now man
I know this will sound goofy but I just did my 2008 focus and I took the headlight off and went through there.
Did you have too remove the ac connector?
Nope just the headlight and grill. You could take off the serpentine belt and the small rubber hose to the power steering tank to give you a little more wiggle room.
NOT SILLY! Alot of people do! That way is totally fine. You're most likely a bigger guy or have big hands! You did great!👍
Thanks, I have a P0128 code on my 2010 Focus. Did you check the thermostat to see if it worked? Some things that stick can be repaired. Has anyone tried to repair one that is sticking?
Easy job in a tough spot.
What is the hose that connects to the smaller connector of the thermostat? I snapped mine but do not know the name of it to replace it
Okay so I had a leak from the opposite side. Anyone have any idea what that could be?? On an 09 Ford Focus SE. It looks like where the upper hose and heater house connect together? I’m not sure.
I got a 2008 Ford focus I've had that vehicle for 2 years it'll be 3 years in January 30th since I bought that car
Cool story bro
So if you buy one without the sensor, the check engine light probs will stay on until you clear the code. But then, will likely come back on later.
why does my car have a screw type clamp where the spring clamp should be. it's an 08 focus. please help bro
what's the model number of the hose clamp pliers you used?
how did you take the ac connectors off
Does anybody know if a 2008 motor 2. 0 a fit in a 05 Ford Focus 2. 0 zx4
How do you remove the electrical connectors. I've been messing with them for several hours now. Don't want to break them. Putting lots of force but they are not moving.
I'm having that problem too did you figure it out ?
Ford focus 2 2010 North American where is the coolant sensor?
What are the torque specs for the bolts
The lay out under the hood on my 2009 is different. the dipstick is in they way, as well as ac lines and the over flow tank is more toward the front of the car. There is no way i can get my hands in there without removing a bunch of stuff. Unfortunately i can't post pics here.
I have the same model year and agree....its super tight in there. Another youtube on this from a former Ford Tech had him removing the radiator to free up some room. I was going to tackle this job myself, but getting too cold up here now so will have to take to a auto service shop....and pay the price. :-(
can't figure out how to get the sensor unclipped that's under intake housing. also the hose connected to the thermostat has a screw not a clamp. struggling to get to that screw.
it slides up off the metal mount tab thing with just enough wire length to make it. It was hard for me too.
How do remove the A/C connector you point out at 0:58 in the video? I can seem to remove it. Thanks for the video by the way! Very helpful.
there is a button on the backside towards the thermostat. you press it and feel the button moving down but it still is hard to pull off, but as long as you press the button it will come off. The button IS PART of the assembly you take off, not part of the casing it plugs in to. also you can also get a long screwdriver through the power steering pulley and press it that way while pulling with your free hand. do not pull by the wires
Makla Thanks! I actually pulled up instead of pushing down and it released it immediately. I kept trying to push down using a flathead but couldn’t get it to release until I reached back to the edge of it and lifted. Thanks again for the reply!
Can I get a job a Ford if I can come up with a more complicated and difficult way to replace a simple part as a thermostat? Not saying I can figure out a worse way!
It's a terrible design!
So I watched another video as well and it said to bleed the air out of the cooling system, you needed to use a gauge attachment and air compressor( special $130 tool...). Is that not necessary?
GeauxNutz89 you should be able to raise the front of the car (ramps work well or just park on an incline) take the cap off the coolant tank and let it run for about 10 minutes. It should purge out the air pockets.
David Hine. That's what I ended up doing. It's worked well so far so I'm good. Thanks
im amazed you could get to it without removing the intake. my mechanic said that's the only way to get to it. and because of that, he "doesn't want to mess with it." so i'm stuck.
you can do it with a 5ish inch socket extension, magnet to not drop the bolts, and some 90 degree long nose pliers and regular long needle nose pliers. you only need to really take off the smaller hose. I took the larger hose from the bottom of the radiator is the way I did it because there is more room to work with.
Sounds like you need to find a new mechanic.
Lol your the customer. Find a new mechanic...
he should have disconnected the electrical connectors in film.
👍
What does the sensor do on the thermostat housing?
Nothing it’s connected to nothing
how do you get the ac connector off i cant se the clip holding it in ?
I'm having that problem too did you figure it out ?
So is it normal for the 2010 focus to keep blowing power steering pumps my fiance has blown 3 of them in 4 years she's on number 4
Yes what John DeRocha said. You should flush any old power steering fluid out of the system. Additionally, it might be a good idea to get a power steering return line filter. Get one with a metal housing instead of plastic.
why ford focus have to be so complicated cars i hate this car is so dumb
I'm an auto mechanic and modern fords are probably one of my most hated cars.
That way we the customers cant work on them ourselves so we have to take it back to the dealership to get it serviced. That way they keep making more money. They design them that way for a reason
How do you know whether or not you need one with or without the sensor?
If you locate it you can look and, for the one with the sensor, there is a sensor plug in near the small hose. For the one without the sensor there is not. Its easy to see it if you locate the part on you vehicle and look though.
I just did this on a 2010 and yes pull the headlight. The t-stat replacement is somewhat difficult and should not be attempted if you are a novice mechanic.
Does the process change if there's an electric sensor in the thermostat?
No the process is the same. The only thing different is you unplug the electrical connector for the sensor.
If you pull the coolant tank and pull the 3 front motor mount bolts, take some weight off the mount with a floor jack and a block(to protect the pan)you can move the engine back a few inches, makes it MUCH easier.
Great idea! And when you're done, go ahead and replace the motor mount because it's the reason your Focus feels like a paint shaker at idle. You're welcome! :)
I noticed the Check engine light was on .
Was this changed out due to a P0128 code ?
whatwhatwhat likely engine running too cool code
Fixing cars and stuff
does the check engine light turn off on its own?
I am honestly not sure. Most parts stores will check your light for free and I bet they can clear if for you if you ask them too.
gary lopez All you have to do is disconnect the batter both posts for 5 minutes to clear codes!
The clamps are all installed from the bottom so there is no way to unclip them from the top. And there is no room from the bottom either.
Does it have a sensor or not? I need to know which one to buy
the one shown in the vid does not have a sensor in it, which means yours might have or not
Hi, I have a question. I replaced mine just now but now it leaks. Not from the hoses, but from the housing itself. Does anyone know what is the problem?
There is a rubber gasket that goes around the thermostat plastic housing. It may not be properly seated when you attached it to the engine. You'll have to unfortunately remove it and check it out. Also make sure the surfaces on both the engine and thermostat housing are clean.
It's a bit labor intensive, but I took the p/s pump out. Opened it right up to where there was plenty of room to get at that housing.
My focus is a 2010 ses and a different setup.
Different how? It is the same on my 2008 SES. 2.0 Duratec
Do I need a gasket for this thermostat housing?
no, it comes with one already installed
how much does this cost?? some dude told me 500 bucks with the thermostat with the sensor. that is insane
O'Reilly lists one with a sensor at $170 , and another one for $135 but had a higher temp.
And a couple without sensors for $27 and $63..
But I assume the check engine light stays on without a sensor being replaced.
And I used to have a car that I could do in 20 minutes.
Basically they're making it so you stay in debt.
My check engine light went on for a P0128 "coolant thermastat temp below regulating temp". Any ideas on what this may be or an estimate on the cost?
Thanks~
Amanda Hourihan I do not have much of an estimate 150-250 range maybe, but likely thermostat needs to be replaced, likely stuck open a little or a lot.
Fixing cars and stuff A shop said it would cost me 500 to do lol,
I told them ill do it myself!
I dropped it off today at my Ford Dealership. It was just about $250. Thanks Fixing cars and stuff
+Amanda Hourihan
Holy crap,$250 dollars to replace a $28 dollar part. Ouch. You need to find someone in your area who does this at home. A lot of certified mechanics do these jobs at their home for half the cost. Obviously they are not certified when they are fixing at their home per se. Hell I know some mechanics that will do a thermostat for a case of beer since thermostats are usually a 5-10 minute job.
+jeff darnell This one is not a 10 minute job. Difficult level is high in this one.
Did you drain all the coolant? Or just replace what leaked out after removing hose? Thanks
Replaced thermostat and without removing anything else it was a tight squeeze. Refilled antifreeze and hosed off the spilled antifreeze. After driving car 25 miles the engine light went out. Taking my granddaughter to school I heard a noise like the power steering pump needed fluid, it's good 👍🏼 thanks to the Focus gremlin but I'm guessing the belt is going to need replacement? Anyone else have this problem?
@@josedaniel4725 if its a sqeeling noise its ether then drive/serpentine belt or power steering pump pully bearing going out

With my personal experience removing the headlight with the two bolts mounted on top of them and just scooting it over above the engine they will give you better access room to removing the clamps holding down the pipes. I also highly recommend going to a local AutoZone and or O’Reillys and getting a 13 inch through 20 inch socket extension because when reaching through the headlight housing it’ll give you a better access room but do not forget that you also need a corner socket bit. If you are having trouble removing the clamps I highly recommend using WD-40. It adds as a lubricant. But it will take time. And also when you are removing the clamps a 13 inch needle nose pliers will work but if you have the right tool that can clamp around the OEM style clamps then go ahead and use it. It will make life 100% easier. Took me about 2 hours but 6 in all to get parts and also have dinner.
need to do this as well. another comment he talks about using a 1/4 drive. what did you use attached to that extension? 1/4 or 3/8? also what year? mine is a 2009 and this is an older car
I replaced my thermostat now car over heats
I have watched several vid's and this one here doesnt show you that IF you don't bleed the system correctly-meaning on my 08 ford focus 2.0L have a reverse cooling system with no bleed valve on the engine. A tool will perform the bleeding correctly ...Uview air lift cooling system refill tool. If you don't bleed correctly you will then have temp too high codes coming on because now you have trapped air. The 2.3 and 2.5L's have a bleed valve

I worked on cars for the last 30 years. This is the absolute worst car to replace a thermostat.
You have never had to replace one on a Lexus. You have to pull the starter to get at it.
Try a 03 up Cadillac 3.6 SRx or CTS. It’s also a complete housing but on the rear of the motor, have to pull the intake manifold and cowl off. You must also remove the housing when swapping transmissions to get to 1 bellhousing bolt.
Cheaply made cars - with shitty engineering. The only reason I have one is because the mother in law gave it to us for free - I hate working on this car. Just bought a 2004 Sentra and love it. No more American cars for me...
