Spectacular. AND NO CGI. Real extras, real people, craftsmanship, numbers spectacle. They don't make scenes like this anymore! I have to see all the Warner classic movies that are about ancient times!
Saw this in 1956 on the big screen. I was 14 and loved it. So real with extras not CGI. Great battle scenes and costumes. Also the extras fighting hand to hand seemed to earn their pay. It had some of my favorite actors, like Sir Cedric Hardwick, Stanley Baker, Harry Andrews Nail McGuiness and Torin Thatcher as well as the two lovers. Jacques Sernas and Rosanna Podesta. The music by Max Steiner was great. I stayed to see it twice.I don't know who ddi the costumes or who was the second unit director, but everything was superb.
Rosanna Podesta, a goddess
as a 29 year old who only sadly have watched this movie on tv, I can only imagine the spectacle of watching this in theatres.
Later on I found out the second uniy director was the famous Yakima Canutt. A few years later he was on Ben Hur with I believe a kid or two of his. He was friends with John Wayne since the thirties.
My favourite Troy movie, you can't beat these classic Hollywood battles!!!
This is the movie I remember from my childhood. It was awesome! The great sweeping shots of the Greek army marching on Troy, the bold attack on the walls and the burning platforms. This was cool stuff for little boys. I had the benefit of hearing this story from my Greek grandfather's knee. To see it on the big screen and even on black and white television was fantastic.
I watched this and the Odyssey in black and white when I was a nipper
Now, this is the Hollywood that I like!
Giant produced spectacles with enormous sets, hundreds of extras, and all practical effects... NO CGI!
Amazing movie! I wish more classics are reshown in theatres
No phones, no internet. Just Troyans and Spartans living life!
The face that launch a thousand ships. The beauty of a woman started this war.
Terrifically brilliant sequence of siege warfare, showcasing that without logistics, preparation and strategy, one cannot hope to besiege a fortified city, let alone take it.
These are great films to watch. Old fashion. Great acting, atmosphere and writing. I can watch these films repeatedly, compared to all the new stuff. Back then, these were big budget movies. The budget was six million, but it wasn't a hit. Back then, these type of movies flooded the theaters and TV.
Seeing this as a kid, I still imagine ancient people of that time really did dressed up like that 😅 . Truly impressive of how it's cinematics and environment truly shows how invested the movie industry was.
A fantastic reconstrucctión of the Hellenistic period
I rented this movie few months ago, one of my favorites growing up , I'm crazy about history and yes best movie ever made.
I like how there are hoplites in a time when they did not exist as depicted here.
Brilliant idea putting dry hay on your siege machines.
Exactly what I was thinking🤔
Why didn't the Trojans shoot fire arrows straight away🏹🔥
Despite the english dubbing for Italian Podesta and Serna they were not only handsome but good actors. So far the best Troy movie.
Brad Pitt's Troy without siege equipment lol.
The Trojan War was a legendary conflict in Greek mythology that took place around the 12th or 13th century BC. The war was waged by the Achaeans against the city of Troy after Paris of Troy took Helen from her husband Menelaus, king of Sparta.
The war is one of the most important events in Greek mythology, and it has been narrated through many works of Greek literature, most notably Homer's “Iliad”.
they don't make epics like this anymore - mind you, they didn't make many then - it cost too much ! Still, we have these to enjoy
You actually see an army preparing. And somewhat realistic costumes and armor.
I finally found the film that had battle scenes reused in the 1963 Jason and the Argonauts film
The Argonauts was a great fantasy film with exciting special effects by Ray Harryhausen.
What a great movie
Troy 2004 is the best movie made about the city of troy ,ever
Amazing movie!
In real life if they allowed the Spartans and their allies to beach their ships and build siege equipment all unopposed, the Trojans would put a nail in the coffin of their own defence.
golden age of hollywood
Used to watch this on Channel 9, KHJ, back in the 60s. Spectacular, if not accurate. Good Hollywood epic fun. And that Warner Bros orchestra! AND Max Steiner! Decades later, I've watched so many Brit films and TV shows, that this film truly is star-studded. Waiting for a Wilhelm scream as it's Warner Bros. Yup, one of the Greeks around 11:46. Yay!
These catapults were REAL effective.
Best Troy Film, no AI, more conversation and behavior as it like in that time!
Best part, everyone is wearing helmets. See, you don't need to have people fighting bare headed, you just need to give the helmet a distinctive crest or decoration.
Imagine going to battle WITHOUT something on your head?!
Ronald Lewis, my favourite actor.
I have this film, and its actually quite good.
They sure don't make em like this anymore
What a boring aquiles! I liked more the one with brad pitt where he takes the beach alone and attacks everyone. This one is too cautious
Hard to compete with Brad the Babe!
It's just as exciting as "Troy" (2002) with Eric Bana and Brad Pitt, but the settings and costumes are more authentic.
When Hollyweird still made good movies !!! No animated crap....
Retro movie of ancient Troja, legendary love story of Queen Helena. Exscuisit woman and men life stories.
Love the costume designs. This is true movie making.
I wanna know how they got the horses and especially the bull's off the ships on a beach landing?
Grande (Big) Rossana Podesta!
Where’s the ditch? Wouldn’t you think they’d dig a ditch?
They fought already with the bow design 😂.... Screwed it beyond human recognition 😅
GREAT OF TROJAN WAR
So part one of the battle was won by the Trojans.....for now.
This movie has way better battles than the Netflix attrocity
The Netflex Helen was so fraking hott.
We’re shots from this in the beginning of Jason and the argohnuts?
Ok, siege towers were first used around 8-9BC! The Trojan War was 12-13BC! Only a couple centuries off! Why were the flaming arrows used when retreating, rather than attacking? It did look good, considering when it was filmed.
gosh
This must have never hit American TV screens. This is totally a new one on me. I’m shocked. I guess there are a few Brit epics out there that have hit American TV. Oh well, it’s back to ‘Zulu’. Two more views and I will hit the 500 mark.
'From this particular phase in history we derive the phrase "Beware of Greeks bearing gifts," when it would be much more logical to derive the phrase "Beware of Trojans, they're complete smegheads'.
Stanley Baker and Harry Andrews really getting stuck in.
I think Helen was considered property. What Paris did was technically stealing.
Was that the wilhelm scream? 11:07
Not one arrow was shot making this film.
I'm sure that Helen wasn't some ordinary looking little blonde woman.
This damn orchestra sound is killing historical movies.
Bridgitte Bardot!!
2:30
Guerra
I thought siege towers were covered with cattle hides. That made them impervious to fire arrows. Also, simple foot deep ditches would have stopped the siege equipment. The Romans (2000 years! later) had a siege down to a science.
Foot deep ditches can be filled in seconds and cattle hides can slightly protect them against ballistas. The most efficient way to bring down those towers was to hook them with scorpions and topple them the set them on fire on exposed side. I can overlook all this in the movie as it would be very expensive to produce that many cattle hides 😁😁😁
@@ComboMuster we had a saying in the Army, "Obstacles not covered by direct or indirect fire are just a nuisance." A ditch around walls, such as moats, are effective. Sending people forward to fill in the moats turns them into archery targets. Obviously this movie is entertainment. Abbattis with a trench covered by archers would have been impossible to take in an assault.
@@Easy-Eight Yet it was done, trenches were covered or any ditches that prevented infantry or siege approaching the walls. I am not saying those are useless on the contrary very useful to pound the enemy with heavy losses.
@ Oh, I understand what you're writing. We're talking about a montage in a movie where a landing, assembling an army, building of siege equipment, deployment of said siege equipment, a battle, and a repulse happen inside of 13 minutes. In real life the archers on that wall would have turned the people underneath into pin cushions. I've seen Middle Ages castle walls and they had a wood (oak, I think) topping on the wall that protected the archers. Those had to be smashed first. I'm nit picking. This was done in 1953. They were just rediscovering long lost civilizations.
While all of you are correct a city under siege, unless it has an army outside it’s walls hidden somewhere, is doomed. Those besieging it don’t actually have to storm the city. They just need to surround it and cut off all supplies from entering the city. Eventually the city will eat itself hollow.
1:00 Sorry but what...
I think this movie got its Bronze age Greeks and Romans mixed up, don't think the Greeks had a Roman standard or give a Roman salute .
Cine 🗿🚬
I love men wearing mini skirts!! 😃 😀 😄
Back then if you had said that to them there would have been one of two results: Spartans would have taken you up on the offer. Persians and others would have you impaled on a stake.
Sir Cedric Hardwickes' (For 'Tis He!) beard looks very itchy.
HAHAHA
The basic weapon was the spear, not sword.
Perhaps the story of this movie reflects the real reason for the siege of Troy far more accurately than Homer's own epos does.
No there's a better one

That's really interesting.. This is a actual event That happened between the Sea people and the Hittite, Mitanni, Mycenean Empires.. The fall of the bronze age..1190BCE.. Didn't happen over a woman It happened over the lack of tint in metal..
The coming of the Sea Pepoles occured after the Trojan War.This war subsequently weakened the Hittite empire as Troy was a powerful ally and the Myceneans were conquered by a people called the Dorians.
The Sea Peoples - or Peleset,as they were known, became the Philistines.
Not that it matters, but though siege towers were used in this period, catapults weren't invented until about 700 years later. A good movie anyway.
The exact date for Trojan war is not established to this day, so 700 years from when 😁😁😁
@ComboMuster Most estimates are somewhere around 1200 BC.
The trojans went on to become the romans
And enacted their karmic comeupance when Greece became a Roman colony.

Was wäre dieser Schwachsinn ohne diese Musik ?
No no no this is so inaccurate! Don't you know that Troy was a city full of black people and the Greeks then were sub Saharan too.
No such thing as white people in history- according to liberals.
No.
Shaka Zulu is white
What? Trojans aren't black people or the Greeks. They were similar to the Hittites. You think this is historically inaccurate? Maybe but no.
Oh, that is pure b.s. Sources?
Though the Greeks fitted straw to their siege towers because? They supposed to burn well ? 😅
At first I thought it was sod with grass to keep it as a binder for the soil. I do know that siege towers in the c. 1300 had cattle hides and that was fairly flame resistant.
To protect against missiles of any sort.
Always thought the explanation for why they started this war, because of some chick, was BS
The "slight" was the excuse for the war.
yeah, I agree. That "chick" thing was legend, myth. there must have been a real reason. But with a grain of truth. Maybe the "chikc" was a stolen goddess statue or mocker of one of the Greek Gods by the Trojans.
The explanation is valid as this was the official reason for declaring war. Just like today, nobody invades another country for resources do they 😁😁😁
The “abduction” of Helen was just an excuse. A justification. Troy was beginning to dominate all trade from the Aegean Sea - and thus to and from the City States of Greece - to Babylon, the Assyrian Empire and Elam. Ships from Egypt would bring gold, ivory, papyrus and other artifacts from Africa to Troy, as would ships and caravans from Israel, Phoenicia and even the Philistine City States. Troy was acting as the middleman to Greece and growing rich and powerful in the process. The Mycenaean Greeks grew envious and jealous; they began to look for an excuse to sack Troy and thus take Troy’s place in the trading network. Helen was the excuse.
@@williampaz2092 False. Greeks were the dominant force in the Aegean, however the land trade from middle east and Asia was controlled by Troy.
Sounds like most of the preparation for war was made by members of the orchestra.
I wonder if this is the soundtrack that Trump hears in his head all day?
What a mess.
Este é de longe melhor filme sobre a guerra de troia td quase fiel a história
Tenho 55 anos Passou aqui na cidade de São Paulo nos anos 80
Finalmente um comentário brasileiro aqui
Jesus...this was WAY before CGI.....look at all the people!!! Most of em' probably get a sandwich after the day's shooting.
