There was a big migration from Alabama to Texas in the 1830s and 1840s. My 4th-great grandfather Rolen Box sailed from Mobile to Harrisburg (now Houston) in 1834. The Texas adventure continues... 🌿⭐🌿
I'm envious of the life you guys are leading right now - Traveling with a purpose, eating well, staying at decent hotels. And I, at 75 years old, ended up broke and living n Vietnam . However on my $1200 a month I can actually live quite well here
There are a lot of trees in Tuscaloosa and the University as you mentioned, so both areas are particularly beautiful and scenic in Spring, Summer and Fall. Driving across the Black Warrior River Bridge from Northport into Tuscaloosa is also very scenic with many large, beautiful trees on both sides of the river.
There are several Colleges in Tuscaloosa besides U.A.T. There's also Shelton State and Stillman, College the College whereas I attended in the late 70's early 80's. Tuscaloosa is a very nice town. I've always admired Tuscaloosa.

We love Taco Casa. Well, most folks here do. For anyone who's wondering, it's not a Taco Bell clone. In fact, Taco Casa opened almost 50 years ago. And it doesn't pretend to be at all authentic Mexican food. Not Tex-Mex either. It's its own unique thing. One of the most popular things they serve are their fountain drinks, because of the shaved ice they use. When my wife was pregnant, she couldn't get enough of it, and other folks say the same thing.

Cahaba, also spelled Cahawba, was the first permanent state capital of Alabama from 1820 to 1825, and the county seat of Dallas County, Alabama until 1866. Located at the confluence of the Alabama and Cahaba rivers, it suffered regular seasonal flooding. The state legislature moved the capital to Tuscaloosa in 1826. Tuscaloosa was the second state capital.

I've been to the Jemison home before, but it was when it was the library and then again when a publisher operated there. That time I got to go into the cupola! I definitely want to see it now. Back when I lived there, there were so many antebellum houses in town that some were subdivided into student apartments. There were also other well known haunted buildings in town. Smith Hall on campus if I remember right, and some antebellum houses that were featured in "13 Alabama Ghosts and Jeffrey" by Kathryn Tucker Windham.
There’s a small town a hour southeast of Tuscaloosa called Montevallo, home of the University of Montevallo! If you ever get a chance to visit, it’s 100% worth the trip. The university’s campus is everything you think of when think of a small southern town- red brick streets, old style street signs, brick archways, beautiful old (and definitely haunted) buildings, and amazing old trees! LOTS of history there on UM’s campus. The town is tiny but charming. Also home to American Village which has replicas of many historical American buildings! I went to UM from 2016-2020, worth a visit if you’re ever in the area!
Our family lived in the country down there I. The early 80s! It sure was sad to see that tornado damage in 2011. Oh yes I remember this small city. We lived closer to Cottondale, but would visit Tuscaloosa quite often. At some point there I lived in the town itself with family and went to Shelton.State. Oh I am so glad to see this place back.up and prospering!
Welcome to my town. It gets really rowdy on football season and we all know why. Country road and Southern hospitality. I also wish our school education is as good as our athletics department but overall still a very good school to attend to for Criminal Justice, and especially the Law school is top notch.

Too bad, when you were at the Jemison home you were right down the street from the historic Waysider restaurant. It's a Tuscaloosa tradition, you could of had lunch there. Check it out if you ever return.
I went to graduate school in Alabama. I was happy when I left, and nothing I saw here has changed my mind or made me feel at all nostalgic for Tuscaloosa.
IDK about that restaurant. But that one yall stopped at in Lafayette Louisiana is still on my mind. My oldest nephew just moved from here in DFW to just northwest of there in Eunice. So I think I will have to stop and try that joint out when I visit him.
You surely had "Georgia on your mind" later that day you filmed. Vegas gave pre-season odds of 500 to 1 that TCU would win the national championship. Imagine coming so close! Twice glimpsed the street signs for the Paul W. Bryant Drive. Even New Englanders (or some of us at least) have a broad enough general knowledge base to recognize the name of Alabama's legendary former coach. Actually Bill Belicheck holds him in high esteem. The stadium is stunning. Its seating capacity would accomodate, per your figures, every man, woman and child in Tuscaloosa. You did a great job again beginning with filming that indestructable and dignified metal cantilever railroad bridge on massive piers and followed up with showing what was, for me, equally impressive, namely, that part on land leading up to it: a long railroad trestle sitting upon a magnificently built wooden trelliswork. Your customary closing was also perfect-a gourmet quality lunch-and my watching after having had a few beers and a substantially inferior dinner!
You would have been better off in the restaurant choice by going a couple of blocks down from the Jemison House to The Waysider. Or pop across the bridge and get ribs at Archibald's.
I'm new to the area and I must say that I really enjoyed your blog about Tuscaloosa and its rich culture. The history was enlightening, The Southern Ale House has been a spot I've wondered about, definitely a must try and the extremely loud car that DOESN'T need a muffler is custom to Tuscaloosa. I hear them everywhere all day long the louder the better I guess, frightening if you ask me must be a Southern thang. Thanks again sorry for the upset of Georgia and TCH I know the feeling after they beat out my hometown team Michigan
Been to Tuscaloosa twice (alone) for Alabama games, stayed at the (yikes) Masters Inn, and found the people of Alabama from the rental car girl at the Birmingham airport to the girl in the kiosk booth at the entrance of the Masters Inn to be absolutely delightful, polite, and chatty. In fact, every one I met, and I’m a chatty person LOL…. from people in Bryant Denny stadium, fans, to retail workers in malls and bars were all really kind and polite. The humidity in September is nasty… but the people, especially those Southern gals, were wonderful to be around and talk to. And I’m from Canada.
OK I love Texas But I love my home state of GA. The game was a slam dunk. That's all I have to say about that. Thanks for another awesome video! I've been through it on the interstate ,so haven't ever go to see it but Tuscaloosa looks like a nice town. Thanks for the tour!

Oh, man, oh, man! I'd love to take a walk around these University grounds one day. I mean, the builildings are gorgeous, the whole grounds are carefully planned and impeccably maintained. Wow, just wow.
Come on down and I can take you to see the sites
It really is one of the best university campuses in the country
Being a tuscaloosa native, I really enjoyed this. I’ve always wondered what other people thought about this old place lol
Looks lovely mate. We are watching from lil ole London in the uk 🇬🇧😉
Next time you visit, eat breakfast at The Waysider and a late lunch at Dreamland. Maybe tour Druid City….a subdivision of T-town; years ago, it was lovely….not sure what it’s like now.
Thank you for an awesome tour! Yet another town I’ve wanted to see but am not able to visit in person. Thanks for all you two do!!
Thank you for watching. :)
People down south really love their football team.
Another fine video about ALABAMA and its historical sites sir. Take care and be safe sir. See you on your next video sir.
Thanks 👍
The "Fretwork" on the house looks similar to the Fret on a guitar... @@JoeandNicsRoadTrip
There was a big migration from Alabama to Texas in the 1830s and 1840s. My 4th-great grandfather Rolen Box sailed from Mobile to Harrisburg (now Houston) in 1834. The Texas adventure continues... 🌿⭐🌿
Yes, very true, I know many of my Alabama family members moved to Texas, Dallas. Some call it Dallas, Texas lol.
@@charlesdavis7461 "Some call it corn. We call it maize. 🌽🌽🌽
(Wasn't that a Mazola commercial?)
My family has been in Texas for 7 generations also. My ggg uncle was Richardson Perry. Look him up pretty interesting.
GTT (Gone to Texas) was often seen painted on wagons heading west and on the homes that were abandoned.
@@Hammertime-y9q Looked him up and read his story. Very interesting, indeed! ⭐
I'm envious of the life you guys are leading right now - Traveling with a purpose, eating well, staying at decent hotels. And I, at 75 years old, ended up broke and living n Vietnam . However on my $1200 a month I can actually live quite well here
Sounds like to me you did it right.
You missed the significance of the Gorgas House on campus. Worth seeing and hearing about.
Thanks!
Thank you, Robert. :)
I'm born and raised there. Home sweet home 🏡❤️
There are several Colleges in Tuscaloosa besides U.A.T. There's also Shelton State and Stillman, College the College whereas I attended in the late 70's early 80's. Tuscaloosa is a very nice town. I've always admired Tuscaloosa.
As a Tuscaloosa native I was glad to see that at 6:41 you got to experience what the town should really be known for... terrible drivers! :)
Tuscaloosa native here 🤚🏾 agreed 😆
Damn right
Texas School Book Depository at 6:35. LOL. It used to The First National Bank. The Jemison Home was once the public library. I live in metro Tuscaloosa. Trust me, are are less charming areas of T-town than the parts you saw.
9:24. My cousin Gary is a mechanic at that Shell Station on the corner of Reed Street. I'm amazed that you seem to visit all the towns and cities that I have direct connections with. Small world, I guess!
Beautiful city! This is the college town I imagined when I was a child. I did not go to a college with nearly the ambiance of UA! Loved this video!
Thank you, Alexandra!
I was in Tuscaloosa in August 2018, I loved Tuscaloosa, good taco place there, Taco Casa.
Enjoyed very much thanks happy you show downtown and not things you can see anywhere!
I HAVE LIVED IN TUSCALOOSA MY WHOLE LIFE--WELL I MOVED AWAY A COUPLE OF TIMES--BUT TUSCALOOSA IS MY HOME FOR MORE THAN 60 YEARS.I HAVE SEEN MANY-MANY VIDEOS BUT YOUR VIDEO MADE ME SMILE.WE ARE NOT PERFICT HERE BUT WE LOVE OUR TOWN..THANK YOU FOR A GREAT VIDEO AND THE KIND WORDS FOR OUR TOWN.WE LOVE OUR FOOTBALL TEAM BUT THERE ARE MANY OTHER THINGS IN OUR TOWN THAT MAKE IT OUR HOME..AGAIN THANK YOU FOR A GREAT VIDEO SO OTHERS MIGHT SEE THAT OUR TOWN IS A GREAT PLACE TO LIVE--AS LEAST I THINK IT IS.KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK AN AS ALWAYS BE SAFE. J R MORRIS TUSCALOOSA ALABAMA--AND OF COURSE---ROLL-TIDE !!!
Roll Tide!! :)
Thanks for the visit. I would have thought that you would have checked out the "Bama" theater while you were downtown. My wife and I have seen the Glenn Miller Band play there a few times in the past. Of course I am an Auburn fan and on my visits I did wear my Auburn jacket but no one said anything thing. They are good people. Before you leave Alabama and while you are on the east side of the state please visit prettiest little village on the plains of Alabama, AUBURN University. Thank you and WARRRREagle!
Auburn is definitely on the list.
Mr. Walker,( just FYI) coming up on February 17th 2023 the Glenn Miller Orchestra will be playing at the BJCC Concert Hall at 7pm. Tickets still available thru Ticketmaster. Roll Tide!
orange tiger cat. You found him. Found Nicky too good video, cool place.. Food looked great
Jesus, you guys are adorable! I'm happy for finding your channel, it's really relaxing to watch your adventures through the US!
Thanks so much! 😊
Glad you put this historical fact in perspective. “Old Cahaba” is a very interesting place. It is now a historical park
The speeding car at the end was perfect timing to end the video :)
As a Canadian that likes to roam I enjoy your videos. We have been in 34 states and your vid’s will allow us to possibly see the rest of them, thanks for doing this.
Thanks again to y'all for showing me Tuscaloosa. I'm an Alabama fan who's not yet made it there but always wondered what it looks like. Thanks for the videos and be blessed with safe travels.
so beautiful views...
Thank you so much for Nice video from TOSCALOOSA ,ALABAMA
I've been to the Jemison home before, but it was when it was the library and then again when a publisher operated there. That time I got to go into the cupola! I definitely want to see it now. Back when I lived there, there were so many antebellum houses in town that some were subdivided into student apartments. There were also other well known haunted buildings in town. Smith Hall on campus if I remember right, and some antebellum houses that were featured in "13 Alabama Ghosts and Jeffrey" by Kathryn Tucker Windham.
Beautiful campus
I just moved to Tuscaloosa county from western NY last April best decision i ever made
I’m from and live in Tuscaloosa. It’s pretty cool to see it from another perspective.
My hometown. I lived in the Holt area of Tuscaloosa.
Thanks for sharing this video! this video let me back to sweet hoem Almabama Tuscaloosa and make me really emotional. Tuscaloosa changed a lot and there are some places I could not recognize anymore except around UA. I've lived here for four yeas and i was student of UA. For me, tuscaloosa is kind of where I miss so much. I hope I can go back and vist the apartment I've been lived and the restaurant i ate before, oh, and my UA❤
"They call Alabama The crimson tide, Call me Deacon Blues."
Old Steely Dan tune, love that song, "Deacon Blues!" 🙂
You asked what Russel Hall is, so basically it’s just where a couple classes are, and then ik the 4th floor is just professors offices but i thinks there’s some on some of the other floors too.
I said on another video I'd check this out and here I am. Great video...Roll Tide! 🇬🇧
Cahaba was the first Capital of the State of Alabama. Good video. I enjoyed it.
Bear Bryant from Fordyce Arkansas,,, my favorite college coach ever
I visited Tuscaloosa some years ago right after a tornado wiped out a complete neighborhood.
I grew up in west end. I loved every second.
Hello.i am ur new subscrber the reason why I love the way u detail everthing.some other bloggers they don't talk about their contents that is why I don't learn something.but I love ur contents and u also sat the time and thank so much for sharing I am able to see everything now about a lot of different states thank so much again
Thanks and welcome! :)
We enjoy watching your videos. You take us places where we probably will never go. While you are in the Southeast region, swing by Enterprise, Alabama - Home of the Bollweevel Monument - the only monument in the world dedicated to a bug! Check out Cutts Restaurant while you are there.
Try Baumhowers Wings. Downtown Catch 22 and numerous breweries on University Blvd close to Embassy Suites. Best Bars off University Blvd on 4th and 23rd ... Rhythm & Brews Bar
In Birmingham, the thunder is starting with possibilty of tornado or straight line winds so you two be very care and batten down the hatches, when the whether gets bad, it will be finished around 1pm.
We got caught in the tornado that hit LaGrange, Georgia. Pretty scary!
@@JoeandNicsRoadTrip So happy you guy were ok!!! I enjoy yr vids, I am from Altoona, AL, its next to Walnut Grove, Snead, they are all very small, Attalla, there is a town Bugtussel near Douglas, you could spread a freakin yr here, it's all small towns except Birmingham, Montgomery, Huntsville, and nothing really like Dallas, maybe Tx size farms!!! Come bk in the spring or Fall the trees are beautiful!!!
@@mattierogers6447 Will be doing that for sure. 😀
We are here and the town is awesome
I remember watching the weather channel when Tuscaloosa was hit by an EF4 April 27th 2011
That was so sad , terrible to watch these kids in The middle of a tornado !
@@TheBamakat it was especially watching it back with the ABC 33 40 Tower cam
I am watching right now again 😊
Too bad, when you were at the Jemison home you were right down the street from the historic Waysider restaurant. It's a Tuscaloosa tradition, you could of had lunch there. Check it out if you ever return.
I went to graduate school in Alabama. I was happy when I left, and nothing I saw here has changed my mind or made me feel at all nostalgic for Tuscaloosa.
I hope you guys are ok. ?? So many dangerous storms
through Alabama today. Not sure where you are right now in
real time.
Born and raised in Tuscaloosa. Love my hometown. Most of the University of Alabama was burned during the Civil War. Lots of history here. Roll Tide.
LOL, fantastic comment as usual, David!!
You would have been better off in the restaurant choice by going a couple of blocks down from the Jemison House to The Waysider. Or pop across the bridge and get ribs at Archibald's.
Don't forget City Cafe. And, honestly, I think Innisfree has a good lunch.
I would have liked to see the inside of that building. Your food looked delicious.
Really enjoyed.....maybe you should tour college towns.
I am from Indonesia and I always happy watching your videos ❤️
You went to the better areas of the city.
Thank you….such rich information…I’m learning.
Awesome! :)
Southern Ale House is legit. Definitely one of the best spots in town. The shrimp and grits go hard.
Great tour LS!
Nice video.!!!
Hope u enjoy geogia. My state. Love geogia.
Looks like our state is kinda peaceful
One of the few states We have never been to. Appreciate you Folks. Meatloaf w bacon and Jack....😎
LOL, yep. :)
OK I love Texas But I love my home state of GA. The game was a slam dunk. That's all I have to say about that. Thanks for another awesome video! I've been through it on the interstate ,so haven't ever go to see it but Tuscaloosa looks like a nice town. Thanks for the tour!
Cool, RR!
I'll be the 1st to like this one. I love it when you guys get buzzed checking out the local breweries and distilleries.
I only had one drink with food, so I didn’t get buzzed. 😀
Cats in a video will ALWAYS make that video better, no matter if those cats are urban or rural. Thanks Joe and Nic for yet another interesting video. ……Russell D.
If you guys ever come to north west Alabama (Florence, area) you should visit W.C. Alot of history in the Quad Cities (Florence, Tuscumbia, Sheffield, muscle Shoals)

Great video.
I apologize for not commenting much. My grandmother has been sick and passed away in the early morning of the 10th, so I have been super busy of late. I will continue to be busy moving her stuff out of her apartment.
I still do look forward to your 2nd swing through Florida, so keep me updated.

I hear you, my dude. You should consider moving to Florida (if you're not already there). There's been a raise in crime like everywhere else, but not to the extent other places have seen. Just a thought.
