    First broadcast: Jul 2015.
Episode 14/18 The story behind a collecting craze that began in Renaissance Europe.
As the popularity of collecting fairs and Pinterest would attest, we are a nation of magpie obsessions. Renaissance expert Professor Nandini Das reveals the story behind the Cabinet of Curiosities - the original collecting craze that began in Renaissance Europe in the 16th and 17th centuries, and which is experiencing a surprising revival in the work of contemporary artists today.

I miss the traditional format of documentaries that concentrated solely on the subject matter using slides of book plates & photographs. Typically these documentaries had less emphasis on the narrator and non relevant scenery and not one minute was wasted.

This is quite inspiring. I am going to collect curiosities. I might do it without spending any money, just with things I can find or old things from charity shops etc. I might suggest it to my friends too. It could be an entertainment for us over winter. Or we could make things maybe.

I took inspiration from the old time "freak shows" and made some lovely (terrifying) curiosities. A "hatchling" made from an egg shell and baby doll bits with a lizard legs and tail etc, a "shrunken head" I made from a dollar tree skull
along some small alabaster jars I picked up at a flea market ($1 for the pair, so they're small), a carved wooden needle holder from Bulgaria (thrift shop)
You can have so much fun making weird things and collecting

There is more to the early origins of this than just collecting. It is linked to the ancient Art of Memory, particularly the Memory Theatre of Giulio Camillo, who was one of the famous famous men in Europe in the 16th century. See Chapter 6 in Frances Yates' The Art of Memory.
