I started 40 yrs ago. we did know about cycling . learning meant buying the hard cover books, and talking to old schoolers. And having patients becuase all the chemicals didn't exist. I still avoid a lot of what people do now that costs them extra money but I do use fertilizers for the plants. I don't do water changes (that doesn't really mean you never change any water) schedule water changes but I do test my water and do top ups. I do use fish math and stock lower then I could. I was around when the filters were very different and did not have bio media, that was a switch over I dove into and embraced when it came out but to this day filter floss is still my best friend, I dumped charcoal like a bad boyfriend real fast when I could though! I do know lots of hacks and tricks that I can use from time to time. I do think a lot of modern keeping is overboard and designed to get people to spend money and avoid needing patients.

QotW: It’s not a fish, but I’ve really grown to love mystery snails. I’m not allowed to have an “actual” tank in my apartment currently, but I have a 3 gallon aquarium with live plants and one mystery snail, and she’s got so much personality.

You should look into getting a friend for her. They'll piggyback and clean eachother. And it's fun to watch em jump from things and float down. I had to get rid of my big snails in favor of some small horned nerite snails. But these snails had been with me from a 3 gallon to a 10 and they were huge.

My mystery snail is for sure one of my most personable “fish”. I’ve got her temporarily with my friendlier of the two bettas (so she won’t get chomped) but I plan on getting her into a 20 gal cory tank to see how big she’ll get.

My first experience of an aquarium was when I was about 5 during the 60's, my uncle had a 6 foot long tank built into his living room wall, you accessed it from another room from outside the house, sort of like a shed. There was even less available to the hobby then. I remember it had lots of plants and a few small fish, maybe a couple of angels. I was fascinated and have been keeping fish on and off ever since. I currently have 8 heavily planted nano aquariums scattered throughout my house with guppies, a betta, shrimp, snails and some pea puffers breeding in one of them. I test my water regularly, but when you are heavily planted and lightly stocked, you really don't need to do water changes very often. My uncle is still alive, he's in his 90's now, relaxing hobbies relieve stress keeping you sane and alive.

QOTW: I've recently fallen in love with Siamese Algae Eaters. They nibble on blackbeard and staghorn algae. But up there, tied at #1, are otocinclus. So cute, industrious, and efficient. I love having a group of them as they eat the slicker, less stringy algae.

I am a HUGE fan of my Florida flag fish. Not only do they eat all the algae, but also any unwanted duckweed. I used to worry so much about one little duckweed infiltrating. But now, I know it will get munched. Also, their personality, and color, make them great additions to my community tanks!

YES! I originally said otos, but for anything fuzzy, which lets be real is the more challenging algae to deal with, Flagfish are AMAZING. Plus they are attractive and very hardy. Question: how do yours do with aggression? I have mine in a newish tank that I am slowly stocking. At first he had a bit of an attitude with the nano rasboras and the otos, but he chilled out after a couple days. I'm considering adding another species, what are your thoughts?

qotw- my favorite lil trooper is a Panda Garra. It was incredible watching her as an infant, cleaning up algae like the world was ending and she needed to get one last meal in before it was Too Late. I've had her for 2ish years now, she's almost the length of my palm, and definitely doesn't do menial algae anymore :) I hired her a gang of Otos so that she could lounge around in peace, like the queen that she is :) She's very friendly and will come up to boop my hands during water changes, and I just love her so much.

Hi Chris! I'm here to answer the algae eater question. I kept nearly every freshwater algae eater fish through my 25 years of being an aquarist and while they eat some algae indeed, they are relatively lazy waterhogs. 😂 So I started to think about what should I try now. I bought mystery snails, five normal sized snail, the common yellow colored ones. Dude I swear they eat algae like I eat Big Mac. Since I put them in my 72 liter tank 7 months ago the algae disappeared and never came back. It is important to give them some sliced up veggies on every 4th day if they consumed all the algae, as I see they like cucumber and zucchini the most, even though I tried nearly everything, for example carrot, salad, broccoli...but this last 3 failed miserably. I like your videos and have a nice week + fishkeeping experience! 🙂

      @Jack_Splendens 9 місяців тому

Yeah, they are next level waterhogs, but never underestimate the full grown ancistrus and pleco, they are good at slacking too. Some bonus info: I live in Hungary & a relatively small town in it. I don't know why but here the fish shops rarely sell the normal siamese, it is more likely to find oto, anci, pleco or the false siamese.

AotW: I love my amano shrimp. They're peaceful, always busy, great at eating algae (even though I feed them extra because I can't say no to these cuties) and just amazing critters to have around, imo. Got a couple of assassin snails today (and eight kuhli loaches, yeeeeey!) and one of the amanos immediately jumped onto the assassin and started cleaning the algae of its back. Ngl, way better work ethics than me.

QotW; definitely going with snowball Neocaridina as my fav algae eater. I have a 10g colony breeding tank w/ snowballs and CPD's. All my other tanks get a lot of natural light so I get hair algae, I swirl it into a ball and toss into the snowballs who will live on that algae ball for a straight 24 hrs of feasting or more till it's gone. They keep their tank so clean I have to add algae! And as soon as I do, they will run-swim in nanoseconds from all over to get that algae! They will give amano and green leaf algae shrimp a serious run for their money on algae eating! Mind you, all my other tanks have "cherry" Neocaridina of various colors in them, but they don't groove algae like snowballs.

1st time answering QOTW my favorite is the otocinclus. They are great at eating algae and are super and I mean SUPER cute. I started with 5 and now have 10. 5 wild caught were my 1st then I saw 1 alone and brought him home only to find out he was not exactly like the others so I tracked down 4 more that looked like him. They all hang out together but the wild caught hide when I come to the tank unlike the tank raised that don’t even swim away from the net or gravel vac

I just thought you needed to know sonething, so that you can go to sleep with a little smile on your face today. Im from germany, so i know this: fishbowls are not only not a thing in germany, actually it is a law that you do not keep any fish (snails ans shrimp are different) in an aquarium with less then 54l. So no fish store even sells them. You also dont find pacus etc in fishstores here, youd have to go to a specialist that actually checks if you have an aquarium big enough for keeping whatever you are buying. In my opinion thats the absolute right thing to do!

I remember my mom's tanks when I was a kid (late 80s). She had under gravel filters. The only plants she could get were hornwort bunches that were always loaded with bladder snails and bulbs for dwarf lilies and apogenetons. She rescues a hex tank (I remember it was pink) that had brackish puffers in it, but found someone else who wanted it after my dad kept saying he was going to put bleach in it. He also would cut the pads from the lilies when they would grow because he said they looked "trashy". He's never kept a fish in his life, these were just in a space where he saw them. Yes, he's still this much of an asshole, but at least my mom left.
We never had more than Jungle brand Start Right crystals and non-iodized salt for chemicals, aside from blue ich meds. The aquatics shops were all the same as well, with no meds sold. This was also Arkansas.

"Moonfish"... must be Dutch, because that's a literal translation of the Dutch name. The aquascape also looks like a good old-fashioned Dutch-style scape. I'm also not surprised by the "no water changes, no/low tech", after all, European aquascaping was where Diana Walstad got her inspiration of the thick dirt pack substrate - before all the fancy tech was invented, fishkeeping was intuitively done this way long before Walstad formalized the science in a book.

Started out as a cashier and now I'm an ALK, and when I tell you I loathe having to talk to customers about fish because a lot of the people I encounter are so disinterested in learning the correct (or at least survivable) way to get their tank started and introduce fish. I tore a ligament in my hand and wear a very obvious brace, customer wanted some black neons... naturally it was taking me a minute to catch all eight that he wanted. Dude gonna look at me and ask me if he needs to catch them 😂 Gotta love the place but also have to hate it too.

They didn't need all that stuff because it is a heavily planted tank with controlled illumination and minimal stocking. A tank will take care of itself if you have a good balance =)

This channel made me work on a naturally planted tank for the long term benefit and convenience of easier (in my opinion) water change and maintenance.

Someone said flagfish, and I have to revise my original answer. I love my otos for the slimy stuff, but flagfish dominate with anything fuzzy. They are hardy, attractive, and utilized all areas of the tank. I have a planted setup with lots of nooks and crannies in the hardscape, and I see that guy everywhere. They have a bit of an attitude, but once everyone gets established it's a peaceful tank. Plus it's a good excuse to keep my tank a little furry. My guy (Rocky) is the centerpiece in my 29 gallon (kind of by accident) and it's working out really well! AND they are from Florida, so good for a North American native tank.

Betta update: So the little man is still kicking! So I think his sight is very limited and he is incredibly near sighted. I’ve found out a way to make him eat which is really good. Just trying to figure out a name for him.
Qotw: I love algae eaters! atm I have a clown pleco who is tankmates with the kuhlis (aka the noodle gang). I don’t always see him but he’s a goofy little guy. I also love my nerite who is a beast. Dude ate hard-to-remove algae off a betta leaf and somehow ate through some of the coating/plastic(?) on several occasions and is still kicking. I also love corycats but my currents tanks aren’t big enough for them 😔

its regreshion, when you go backwards. my dad, same age, had a tank so much like this one, even the same type of stock, angel fish, cat fish (called somthing else now corydora) khuli loach he also has sworsfish and mollys but only cardanal, neon, head n tail light, tetras and harleqin and zebra rasp. and guppys, which bread regularly. when i whent to secondary school there were libuary books from the 60's (at uni i studyed 2 types of biology) with the carbon cycle (though i was at secondary late 80's) we were taught carbon cycle at school. my dad clearly understood the plants were importaint for the health of the fish. watching that tank is one of my earliest memories, one of my friends came into the house when i was 4 or 5 and i was telling him what all the fish were, i always knew exactly what was in the tanks, even though its a days travel to visit i still know what fish he has (one 20yr old dwarfed plec, its only just over a foot long, neon/cardinal tetra guppys, khuli/basic loach corydora) i just have goldfish. there was a real fish comunity, they talked to each other, i remember going and getting medicine when we got white spot and my dad chatted for ages with the petshop man and a couple of other people that came in, i just played with the animals
    i like weather loach

I have noticed that parrot people are very often also saltwater tank fish people too. I fall into this category. Dogs and cats are not enough for quirky people- they bore us. We require a pet that can communicate and manipulate us along with a tank that we kept an octopus in for at least a year of our life before we decide to take on the impossible hobby of growing a coral reef in our living rooms😂 if this sounds like you, we are the same little weirdos! There are a lot of us! And our parrots know all our fishes names!!! We still can’t figure out which is more intelligent- a parrot or an octopus. We are the weirdos that keep this information locked in our brains and one day we think it’s the parrot and the next day it’s the octopus.

I love Otocinclus. Not because they effectively eat my algae (cuz the dont) but because they are just gorgeous and cute and they look like mini sharks when they swim around. But honestly i have never had any other algae eaters except snails.

QOTW: For freshwater tanks, I used snails to eat my algae! The chinese mystery snail is very good at eating all the algae, but imo they are kinda ugly and they breed too fast. My favorite algae eater cuz they look good are the pink ramshorn snails! (For saltwater though, I love my nudibranch!!)
