"Quit living on dreams - life is not what it seems" is not meant to express the desire to protect her. Quite the opposite. He is the psychopath who keeps her hidden, she shall quit having hope to escape, to be ever set free again or to be rescued. It's like "face the reality" - "Du bist hier bei mir, niemand wird dich finden" When he sings "they are coming for you but they won't find you" he is talking about the police, the feds, on their search & rescue mission.
In verse 2 he blames her for drawing his attention on her. She was made up to pretty. He interpreted that as her desire for him, that she would need him.
It's a very dark song about a psychopath and it still hasn't lost anything of its emotional impact. Falco was amazing.

@@chrisk7736 He killed her, and now he is haunted by her and all that she could have been the mother, the socialite, the dancer, all the things she will never be because she is dead. He hears he laughter and see her dance, and goes crazy because he is tormented by the fact that he cant really ever have her or be loved by her. The announcer in German say that there has been an increase in missing persons and the latest is a 19 year old named jenny. Falco was Brilliant, ahead of his time. He graduated from the Vienna Music Conservatory as prodigy.... this song was so controversial at the time that is was banned from play on most radio stations in North America, and lots all over the world. It's unfortunate because Falco is true artists who works with emotions, and includes horror and tragedy. Now we have endless serial killer shows on Discovery, and crime podcasts up the Ying yang, but he did this in the early 80s way ahead of his time. Again, he was an artist, and he was not a killer or a deviant, well he did have a huge cocaine problem but which star did not have one in the 80s.... this song is amazing, and if you really read into everything he is saying, he is far from promoting the subject by instead warning how obsession and desire of some men who are not capable of love can lead to dangerous waters.... look at the birds on his piano, they are all stuffed and dead. Birds are supposed to fly, his character in the video does not understand that and only is concerned with their outer beauty same with jenny, he thinks he can keep them all for himself. There is no happy ending here, not in part 1 not in part 2, in all parts you see broken man rotting in a padded room or a prison cell. Falco is not promoting it, he is warning against our fascination with the superficial. I miss him so much, he died in a car accident in the Caribbean, word was he was high as kite. A Master Artist who rapped on the world stage long before anyone in North America did.

A song by Falco with a very sad background. Processing kidnapping, rape and murder in one song is certainly not the easiest thing, but Falco was a great one in his field and, in my opinion, did a great job on the subject. Falco has given the music scene a lot.😥👍🙌

Falco did really well for a guy from Vienna, Austria to try and incorporate as much English into his songs as he did, especially when you consider that German is the first language in Austria and that he had no formal training.

The censorship agencies drew a correlation with the crime and the song. Perhaps he was making a point how inept the police was finding the girl.

    Hello,
I'm from Germany and I'm very proud to say that I experienced the entire late 60s, the 70s and the 80s. The 90s were OK, but not as great as the previous decades. I was born in 1966 and have two siblings, who are a bit older than me. As teenagers, we slept in one room and I was the youngest. My older brother always had the habit of falling asleep with the radio on in the evenings and I had to turn it off so I could sleep.
That's how I got to hear the radio shows that played the latest hits. The most popular radio show at the time was Sandock's Hit Parade. With his music show, he later became a kind of cult DJ. Back then, the artists' original records (vinyls) were still played on the radio.
my first favorite bands were the village people (ymca) and elo (out of the blue LP). since i was 13-18 years old in the 80s, i heard all the music there was (on tv and radio). the 70s and 80s were essential for all artists who started their careers after that. these artists still shape music today. without these artists there would be no songs today.
i would like to highlight "Falco".
here (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeanny_(song) ) there is background information on his number 1 smash hit at the time, Jeanny.
And here (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Falco_(musician) ) is background information on Falco himself.
I used to like listening to Falco, but since he died in a traffic accident on February 6, 1998, his songs always make me sad.
But I think it's nice that young people like you still like and discover Falco today.
The 70s, but especially the 80s, brought us a kind of spirit of optimism. But there were also negative things like fear of nuclear war, environmental pollution (accidents with oil tankers *Exon Valdez) and the Chernobyl accident (a nuclear power plant in Ukraine that exploded and brought radioactive radiation to Europe.
A very well-known anti-war song at the time was by Udo Lindenberg and Pascal, an 11-year-old boy who asks the question "What are wars for?" in the music video. If you watch this music video, please use subtitles because it is sung in German.
Even though this song is so old, the topic of the song is still relevant.
    Best wishes from Germany.... Frank

I am from Germany, and I am in an age to know Flaco
I am also a student in the field of -media art and film-.... I have some core understanding of movie.psychology
I can give you my interpretation of what I saw in that video
first my understanding of this music video by falco
than the hints that make me hint like that
this song depicts a man with an twisted mind.... hes a serial killer focusing on youg beautiful girls, as they are often idolized by general man.
he justifies his actions by telling himself the narrative "I protect these girls from a an evil world... so I escape them from this world"...
he takes actions and alongway of his actions he kills the girls... (rape happened befor... or after... probably... cause thats how it goes with crimes circuling around ""forced romance + twisted minds"" .... this conclusion is up to the viewer and just guesed based on viewers understanding of the world)
the fact that he was the one murdering ginie is simply ignored by the murder... its excluded of his conciousness... like someone pretending he didnt do it... even know the did it... twisted minds are able to surpress their own memories... in a way that it gets cut out of reality... simply gets ignored
Why does ginie appear alive in some scenes beyound the flashbacks of the story?
ginie is not alive in this scenes
its an artistic interpretation of "ghost ginie" projected from the mind of the now inprisoned murder in the psychatric asylmn
its surreal... and a way to potray the memories of the idioligizing of ginie as the twisted mind of the murder recalls her
    like in a lucid dream
ginies picture is showed in various styles.... all reflecting what makes her so desierable for the murder
    - we have picturs of ginie showing her "sexyness" .... the cocktaildress... showing th but
    - we have picturs of ginie showing "bossy and provcate" ... the spread leg scene... playing with male fantasys of dominant woman
    - we have pictures of ginie just beeing a ver charming cheerfull girl in casual cloathing ... the desire for a just very charming sweet person
additionally we have one szene in which ginie make this head.swingin.movement directly in front of the murderes face...
    ... I interpret as following...
ginie is depicted like a a spirit possesing the mind of the murder.... dancing around and making fun of him....
the murders mind is captivated by the aluring ginie... ginie makes fun of the murder
not the real ginie... but the projection of ginie in the mind of the murder
this projection acts like its a real person
depicting this projection as a real person in different interactions with the murder (as desriped befor) as a way of the movie director
to incooperate the message (as described befor) in an artistic (movie.art) way
this kind of -art- is called -movie.montage-
I read a book about that by a guy called -EisenStein- or something....
    yeah
all of this is just my understanding... I guess it can give more understanding to this musik.video
I felt the urge to bring my thoughts to paper.... cause I really feel the music.video went a bit far with its "underlining message"
so that most people dont get it -very right-
    but...
its understandable to -obscure- the message with various -movie.art.techniques-
Imagine Falco would just made it super obvious that he wants to do a song about murdering and raping young beautiful woman
    additionally...
I dont believe Falko wanted to promote this actions...
... what he wanted to promote is... avarance of this kind of krimes... by punching it into the faces of society
    but thats...
... just also just my assumption

But if you read between the lines, "missing people" from the news and "nobody will find you, you are with me" refers to kidnapping and if you think further it can also lead to murder and if you think of a man kidnapping a young pretty woman, also to rape, but that's interpretation and not directly sung in the song.

    "Mach mich nicht an"
    (Don’t hit on me)
Aber du warst durchschaut, Augen sagen mehr als Worte
(But you were transparent, eyes say more than words)
    Du brauchst mich doch, hmh?
    (You need me, don’t you?)
Alle wissen, dass wir zusammen sind ab heute
(Everyone knows that we’re together from today)
Jetzt hör' ich sie, sie kommen
(Now I hear them, they are coming)
    Sie kommen dich zu holen
    (They’re coming to get you)
    Sie werden dich nicht finden
    (They won’t find you)
Niemand wird dich finden, du bist bei mir
(No one will find you, you’re with me)
    Jeanny, quit livin' on dreams
    (Jeanny, quit livin' on dreams)
    Jeanny (du bist bei mir)
    (Jeanny (you’re with me))
Jeanny, life is not what it seems
(Jeanny, life is not what it seems)
In den letzten Monaten ist die Zahl der vermissten Personen dramatisch angestiegen
(In recent months, the number of missing persons has dramatically increased)
Die jüngste Veröffentlichung der lokalen Polizeibehörde berichtet von einem weiteren tragischen Fall
(The latest release from the local police department reports another tragic case)
Es handelt sich um ein neunzehnjähriges Mädchen, das zuletzt vor vierzehn Tagen gesehen wurde
(It concerns a nineteen-year-old girl who was last seen fourteen days ago)
Die Polizei schließt die Möglichkeit nicht aus, dass es sich hier um ein Verbrechen handelt
(The police do not rule out the possibility that this is a crime)
    Jeanny, quit livin' on dreams
    (Jeanny, quit livin' on dreams)
Jeanny, life is not what it seems
(Jeanny, life is not what it seems)
Jeanny, there's someone (Jeanny) who needs you
(Jeanny, there’s someone (Jeanny) who needs you)

The song earned a lot of misunderstanding criticism back in the days. It was made and released a while after a lot of children went missing in Austria.
It was sung from the perspective of a psychopath who wanted to be with and protect a girl. The song leaves a bit of room for interpretation though.
It used to be one of my favorite and most saddening songs I knew in my youth.

What if Falco simply wanted to warn young women with his song? At least it makes sense to me.

Was ist dein Problem ?

He is an insane killer in this song, and you are right, he kidnapped her and killed her. When this song was released in Germany and Austria they were talking about, to forbid this song. I like the song, but not the lyrics of it, because they are very disturbing. Greetings from Germany

It was called a scandal in German speaking languages. Because it tells a story about a stalker who raped and killed a girl.

You didn't understand the video, it's about a sex offender who stalked and murdered this young woman.
Therefore, the song was controversial in Germany and was banned and thus the song was heard and spread.

If only you knew German. It is about a serial rapist and one of the most harrowing songs ever, which was banned in Austria and parts of Germany for quite a few years for glorifying rape. The song does the exacxt opposite. Beautifully horrible song and good reaction considering you don't know German. Btw, I'm Danish, just happen to be a polyglot who wants to polish his own halo 🙂
