1) Roots need exposure to water more, right? So, wouldn’t be more product when inclined or horizontal done?
2) Most of the people showing DIY ones with pipes, what is wrong with them?

The one aspect in vertical versus horizontal labor costs that was not address is "robotics." In horizontal harvesting, robotics has been the main factor to horizontal production being favored. I imagine this will change when vertical robotic harvesting becomes available.
It definitely plays a role, +Henry DuQuesnay, although this tech is meant for those farmers wanting to start growing immediately, and preferably without a massive capital expense on the front end. They also don't address the airflow point made in this video. That said, these farmers need tech that allows them to start growing and serving their markets quickly, and scale up organically as they make money. Robotics are neat and will definitely be part of the future of farming, but our farmers don't want to wait around for that tech to become affordable or accessible to them. Hope that makes sense.
do the racks need to be cleaned periodically? if so how often? you have to put the minerals or plant food to the drippers?
is this considered a greenhouse? enclosed environment?
Sure, +paul kawsek - Just like any system, the ZipFarm will need periodic cleaning. How often you clean the system depends on your growing goals and where you're selling. For the ZipFarm, the nutrient solution is automatically mixed in a dosing tank and adding seamlessly to the system. This system works well in a warehouse or other enclosed growing environment.

Why are pests such a problem for an indoor system?
Hey +Lavi Fletcher - Pests pose a problem for any commercial hydroponic operation (or any farm business for that matter). If left unchecked, pest outbreaks can cause crop damage and render your crops unsalable- a problem you can't afford to have when you have contracts to fulfill every week for local restaurants, grocery stores, or even CSAs. Despite the increased exclusion mechanisms like foot baths, etc. pest problems can be just as detrimental to indoor systems as outdoor systems depending on how much traffic your indoor system sees. It only takes letting a few aphids or thrips or fungal spores into your system to have a serious problem. If you're a commercial producer with people counting on your produce, it's not a good idea to assume safety from pest issues just because you're growing indoors. Having a solid IPM strategy is your best bet.
