  • Store-bought SPAM is usually packed with lots of sodium (or salt), as well as sodium nitrite as a preservative. By making your own SPAM, you can adjust the amount of salt added to your desired saltiness. Also, there is NO preservative added to homemade SPAM, thus it is healthier.

    Thank you! This is a great video. Hawaii consumes a huge part of the production spam. By using raw pork, it lets you control the ingredients that go into it. You can probably eliminateminate the sugar, And control the other ingredients. But there is some slimy stuff is actually gelatin from the Cartlidge. It gives some moisture. And I guess the potato starch is a binding agent to keep the loaf together.

    That juice would be wonderful to use in flavoring beans or soups.

    what I liked about this video is, you gave all measurements and ingredients in the beginning, I have to concur with others a meat grinder is more suitable for the consistency of the product..

    it was a nice video, but The Wolfe Pit homemade spam is the real recipe, this is somewhat good if you do not have a meat grinder, but like the other poster said, I think the processor is mixing the meat way to much and breaking down too many of the fibers, thats why its best to get a meat grinder and do it by hand. but to each his own.

  • @dircia7754

    You should try using a meat grinder instead of a food processor. The food processor breaks the meat down too much. Spam is a ground meat product not a pâté.

    Question: Could cold chicken broth be substituted for the water to mix with starch? Also can I substitute corn start......I have never seen potato start here in Thailand. Thanks for the great video. Canned Spam runs about $ 6.40 per can if you can find it.

    • @dietplan101
      @dietplan101  8 років тому +1

      Ya, I think chicken broth and cornstarch should be ok, just to bind the meat. Thanks for watching.

      Daniel David Where do you live that Spam costs so much? I purchase it at either Walmart for $2.69 or Public for $3.29. I think that it is very expensive where I live because Naples Florida is a vacation hot spot.

    I'm wondering if you can just use a pre-cooked whole ham and grind that to the point of being emulsified, along with spices (minus the salt) to make spam. So long as there's enough fat on the ham it should work, right? And you wouldn't need to do all the cooking. I'd value your opinion, thanks.

    I don't have a food processor, so can I just buy the pork and ham and have my butcher grind them up together then bring home to chill and do the last parts? thx for the video

    • @dietplan101
      @dietplan101  6 років тому +1

      You need the meat to emulsified. Mix thoroughly with hands until the mixture gets sticky with color slightly brightened, takes about 5 minutes.

      You do NOT need to emulsify the meat. Or drain the juice. Just have the butcher grind it. I have 3 loaves of spam in the oven right now, which is why I'm watching other spam videos.

      I let the broth chill and remove the floating fat. Add unflavored gelatine according to the pkg. directions. Pour over the sliced meat to preserve moisture. It's an aspic, similar to vienna sausages LOL. My son hates it and gives it to the dogs. I don't like it in cold sandwiches but it's good if you fry the meat then add them to the pan and pour over.

      ernesto vargas I think if you used Pink salt (sodium nitrate or sodium nitrite not sure which to use for cooked meats) the meat would have retained the red coloring and wouldn't have looked so anemic. Outside of the color, I'm sure it tasted great anyway.
