    This why I love PRS they take the time to disign little things that make they the rolls Royce of guitars like the spring holders on the pickup rings . I mean for god's sake the CEO is making a UA-cam video about tuner's it's mind blowing. Plus Paul seems like a guy you'd want to have beer with and talk gear.

      Could you imagine gibsons ceo doing a video like this? He probably wouldn't even know what a locking tuner does.

    The ALL Rosewood neck is an exquisite tactile treat, and when paired w/ these new tuners the aesthetics are way beyond sexy. The intelligent consideration of each detail is what elevates PRS guitars to the level of elegance. NICE job, sir!

    The open gear case does transfer a spectrum of resonating. The closed cap design works like a damper. This can be measured. It's like jumping up from nickel wound strings to a semi bright steel string set. This is why the open gear case. Also in addition to this. You can easily lubricate the tuners.

    Made by Gotoh in Japan for PRS, which is confirmed by Shawn (Private Stock Department). The FI's and FII's were made by Schaller (Germany).

    Most of these comments just prove that you can't make anything idiot proof. He could come to people's houses and change their strings, and some folks would complain.

      I don’t like the looks of open back tuners.... The roots of it comes from the fact that it was cheaper for them too produce them like that... If you like that, then fine.... buy them. If not get something else...

    It's weird that he did the entire video that was supposed to be focused on those tuners, but not 1 time did they show what the tuners actually looked like or how they functioned.

    I have a 16-year-old PRS Custom 22 that had locking tuners. But I had so much trouble locking the high E string that I eventually replaced the PRS tuners with Schallers. Typically, it would take more than 5 attempts to lock the high E string which was extremely frustrating. Do the Phase III tuners do a better job of locking that high E string??

    ***** they will as long as the ferrel guides that the go into where the tuning pegs enter at the headstock, are the right size..not to big not to small or you will have to address that issue if the problem surfaces

    Dear Mr Paul Reed Smith,
    I would love to know WHAT, to your opinion, is the main "tone disadvantage" of a locking tuner which has its "locking knob" in the back of the headstock (not mentioning any brand, of course).
    Why, talking about "tone" of course, is this better when the "locking knob" is located on the top of the headstock ?
    THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR ANSWER.

    • @yomz0r
      @yomz0r 6 років тому +2

      If the string is locked the tuner does not affect the tone whatsoever. Only thing that could affect the tone is the distance from where the tuner attaches to the neck to where the string is fastened in the tuner. A longer distance there could mean the tuner itself "steals" a bit more of the string's vibration. Should be indistinguishable to the ear though and affecting sustain more than tone alone and even that to a nearly unnoticeable degree.

      Stop thinking about it and play your guitar! Tuners are tuners if they are made reasonably well.

    I loved them. I have 2 guitars with them and cant say enough good things about prs. However last year i bought a purple mist 594 and to much disappointment you switched to some close back "vintage" style garbage that looks and works like something gibson would have used during the wordt years. Beautiful, guitar, i cannot stress how much i hate these tuners and they are non locking.

    I have enjoyed many years running sperzels. They dampen tone. But they are well made. Think of woods. . Use maple headstock. Then jump over to solid ebony. You will get the picture. Ebony sparkles. Maple dampens. Swamp ash is very good. Kona sucks

    • @tomosbourne3218
      @tomosbourne3218 4 роки тому

      I build racing motors. Aluminum connecting rods dampen harmonics on crankshaft. Steel rods augment resonation. This is a law of metalurgy. Same thing applies to guitars. Wood density has similar characters. Where ever you can gain specific tone, you just do it. Tuners are part of the equation. Wrong combinations make guitars hard to intonate. That's why PRS takes time to get it right. Good guitar players like Paul Smith just know what works. When a guitar sustains all through the coffee break. You have done your job. The sonzera 50 watt killer amp is a total compliment to any electric guitar. A poor expensive amp might not be able to deal with what a Sonzera does. Analog is on the way back and not nearly soon enough.

  • @cosmonaut9942
    @cosmonaut9942 3 роки тому

    I guess that PRS is not happy about paying a little extra for these tuners because they're discontinued on the 2020 McCarty 594 models. Obviously, in a a cost cutting move they switched to "vintage style' closed back tuners that are kind of crappy and cheap in comparison. Bad move for a company that holds itself out to be a step above. They certainly charge for that step above. I bought the new model with the crappy tuners and did not realize it until I opened the case. My bad but an expensive mistake. I would have bought a 2019 model.

  • @thomasdoyle4485

    OK great.... and just when you get used to seeing the open back tuners on an electric instrument they are gone? So why is PRS now putting vintage tuners on their 594's and other models? Im personally in favor of locking tuners. The vintage ones look like a skinny shaft which is easier to break or bend if dropped or bumped, and there is no locking mechanism to offer the great tuning stability of the Gen 3. Its a definite downgrade in my mind.

  • @satinwhip
    @satinwhip 5 років тому +1

    Paul and I clearly have differing opinions of what constitutes "handsome". I think exposed gear tuners look cheap. My cheap beginner Stella acoustic had exposed gears. Lots of guitars in that time period had exposed gears. Some sounded great, others were basically firewood.

    • @riteandleft
      @riteandleft 4 роки тому

      And they also attract dust that will cause premature wear to the gears and subsequent looseness and unstable tuning. Absolutely no need for open back tuners in this day and age. Plus a kid could get their fingers trapped in there ;-)

    It is because of Paul's willingness to purchase massive amounts pouched curly maple during the 80's that the Lacey Act, 16 U.S.C. §§ 3371-3378 was initiated A law demanding more strict certification of curly maple.

    I hate the phase iii tuners. Need a black color option and gotoh is the worst company to find replacement buttons. As far as gotoh they make great tuning machines but with the phase iii your very limited with replacements unless you dont mind drilling holes in you guitar and having pre existing holes from the phase iii tuners.

    The brass shaft Phase II tuners on my 3 year old PRS are THE worst modern machine tuners I've ever used. Gritty feel, sloppy play in the gears that can't be adjusted out with the button screws. I've got 50 year old Klusons that work better than these things. Very disappointing
