It's sad that Wheein and Hwasa regressed after their debut. Hwasa has been trying to make her voice sound sexy and throaty but it takes a toll on the enunciation of words. Same with Wheein - I love her rifts but sometimes trying too much just strains her voice and sometimes the lyrics are unclear. Both Moonbyul and Solar have the best enunciation. Moonbyul's and Solar's solo careers are picking up and I love that they keep challenging themselves to try different genres. Love them all! I wonder if their agencies provide them with vocal coaches to help them with their weaknesses. Looking forward to their comeback tomorrow.
Yeah I agree with you about the enunciation (and also coincidentally on how I'm impressed with Solar's and Moonbyul's more recent stuff but not Wheein's and Hwasa's more recent stuff). IMO, Wheein's enunciation/vowel shaping issues can be traced to her throat shaping and nasality (which is why she can sound "chewy" at times) and Hwasa's enuncation/vowel shaping issues can be traced to her tongue tension issues. I'm also really excited for their comeback tomorrow as well, and in fact, I'm actually planning to release a video regarding their comeback either tomorrow or Wednesday (depending on how progress goes), so stay around! ***EDIT: the release date for the album showcase has been delayed due to certain reasons, but it will come out eventually!

I appreciate the technical explanation and I totally agree with this ranking even as a wheein bias. I say Solar & Moonbyul has improved a lot. Moonbyul has great control on her voice, however, I often notice that she's singing/straining from her throat and she's having a hard time holding the notes. Did you know that pre-debut Wheein & Hwasa sounds very much alike? In the earlier songs of Mamamoo, I sometimes get confused who's singing. I think Hwasa was trying to have this signature sound and it might be taking a toll on her vocal health since it's not her natural style. As for Wheein, I have a feeling that her regression is more on psychological. Her latest album was done in a very chill vocal approach (she's in her "safe zone") but when Mamamoo came back promoting in festivals, a lot of fans noticed how her voice sounds much stronger that it's peaking through the speakers. But now during her Illella promotions, her voice is not as strong again, very evident since she's singing after Solar. So I agree with the inconsistencies of her vocal performance. I hope the ladies are taking care of their vocal health, especially with the upcoming world tour.

I totally agree. After their Melting, album Hwasa and Wheein changed their singing style to sound more original and interesting, however their voices aren´t as stronger as in the beginning (their legendary Immortal songs performances). Tbh, even though I am Moomoo and love them all, I can´t help but dislike that Hwasa decided to sing in more breathy and raspy style (it kinda reminds me how Rihanna changed her singing). I preferred her more jazzy and lively voice she used to have (eg. Fly me to the moon - cover).
Solar just sang One Last Time from Mata Hari in her Solarsido year-end Karaoke. I could feel there are some differences compared to her performance in the Mata Hari Press Call (2022.06.21). It seems to me that she has evolved in the second half of 2022. I don't know if it is a good material to show how much she had improved during the performances of Mata Hari in the summer of 2022. Besides, we don't get to see Solar showcases her lower register enough but I am amazed by her deep vocals in her newly released song Paradise, the theme song for a new DJ survival show WET! (World EDM Trend). Hope to hear more discussions about the evolutions of her vocal techniques in a separate video or together with her members as I love their voices so much:) Solar also sang many snippets of Mata Hari numbers in her more recent year-end Solarsido live broadcast.
Just found this video yesterday and it is very informative. Thank you very much! I love all of their voices and appreciate how they can add distinct layers to Mamamoo's songs. I am happy to see Solar, our YongSun-nie, has stayed consistent and keep improving over the years, especially after her Mata Hari experience. It is a pity that we only have very limited materials about the musical as what we have are from its sitzprobe, press call, pre-recording (Some said The Girl I Used To Be was filmed before the premiere), and Amazing Saturday. Many reviews from Moomoos and general musical fans who attended the musical said Solar had improved even more throughout the period of performances, significantly in both singing and acting. Hope EMK will release VOD(s) for later performances. I love the way Solar executes jaw/Gospel vibrato, if that is what she is/was doing, as I find her executions usually fit the senses of the songs she performed very well since I am not a fan of 'classical' vibrato and I am completely biased. (I love her voice the most). However, because of this video, I learned the difference and hope she can showcase 'improvement' in the future because the Mata Hari reviews that I have seen also mentioned something about her vibrato in later performances. I wish there could be an analysis about how Solar switches vocal techniques for and after the musical. Some said the ways she sang in IMAGE (5:52am) and After Love are a little bit different than before but I am no expert of vocal techniques. Or, is there anything noticeable in their recent comeback, such as her vocal in ILLELLA, or other songs? For the regressions about Wheein and Hwasa, I am wondering what if they have decided to perform Immortal Songs medley again in their world tour, will practices help them get back to their previous vocal states? As regressions are probably due to lack of executions and stylish choices. As for Moonbyul, she might improve even more since her dedication in vocal training and her recent competition in Second World. I hope there will be an update when more materials are available.
Wheein needs to go back to her ways. We all know she could, because when she wants to, she can really make clear sounding notes(see her live stages for her solo stuff). It’s not like she forgot how to do the things she did before, that’s hard to remove in her system and also muscle memory. There maybe four reasons why I think she regressed: 1. Fatigue - Mamamoo have been working nonstop either as a group and solo. No matter how good a technique is, with a packed schedule, your throat muscles will feel the fatigue one way or another. 2. Drinking Habits - I am not sure how soju works, but alcohol is a singer’s great enemy. Alcohol dries your throat, which may lead to a increased friction when engaging throat muscles. That’s really bad and Wheein is a heavy drinker. 3. Confidence - we have seen her downfall after her diagnosis. She shows insecurities with her voice, that’s why she dodges a lot these days. She, firsthand, experienced the public scrutiny. This may have taken a toll on her and might want to not make mistakes on stage, hence, the countless dodging. 4. Preference - she was well known for the angelic voice she showed during her performances, the light airy tone is well received by the public. It maybe a reason. These are just my assumptions based on what I observed for following her for the entirety of her career.
Ohh this was so interesting to watch! I don't understand much of anything about singing, but I've sometimes wondered in both Wheein and Hwasa's cases if they maybe used to sing a bit better before (or well, I don't know if "better" is the best word, but anyway). So it was kind of cool to learn that possibly I wasn't entirely off the mark :D Solar and Moonbyul both seem to have so much drive and determination career-wise that it's not surprising to me at all that they've improved. Man, this it's harsh, but trained musicians are harsh and know the limits of their instrument/voice. I appreciate this kind of analysis, cause we (myself included) tend to overreact about our faves. I know what mamamoo are capable to do and the great talent they hold and man mamamoo performances are far from perfect but at the same time are perfect

Right. Wheein was actually my top Mamamoo vocalist until Mata Hari happened. Solar improved a lot after her musical. Moonbyul, although my bias has always been the least effective vocalist in Mamamoo. She's great. Just that she's in Mamamoo 😅No need to explain that.

Hi! Thanks a lot for making this video, I’ve been following Mamamoo’s journey as a group for a bit, and as a moomoo I pay attention to the member’s vocal health and evolution a lot! I’ve seen people argue a lot about Wheein and Hwasa’s vocal regression on a post, so I tried to search for reliable sources criticizing the member’s vocals (I’ve seen you leaving multiple comments on another vocal analysis of Wheein!). I’m not knowledgeable in vocals so I do hope that as someone who knows a lot on this subject you can keep up with the member’s evolution and keep us updated (I see that you’re keeping a table that you will update). On a side note, I’m really really worried about Wheein’s voice. I want her to continue singing until she’s old! It’s true that she lost a bit of her touch, but I hope that she takes care of her vocal health and can bounce back, even though maybe she’ll never sing like in her prime again. She’s aware of her regression so I hope that it’s one of her priority. Seeing her sometimes in pain or discomforted trying to sing is really heartbreaking to me.
They are all incredible and multitalented, but Wheein and Hwasa need to take better care of their voices, because even for me, who is not that knowledgeable in singing, I had noticed a certain decline in their voices, while Solar and Moonbyel only progress

As someone who is Wheein and Hwasa ult and as among my most favorite voices in KPOP, same. 😭 It’s just all hoping that they can take care of their voices well and doing more vocal practices and exercises (would definitely be helpful to refresh back to the basics as well especially for Wheein), so that they don’t regress further (I don’t want it to be another Park Bom/late 5H era Lauren Jauregui case ever again).

It’s going to be a long journey as she does have a good amount of things she needs to fix before entering above average tier (more chest engagement, stronger and fuller breath support, vocal cord connection, singing with an open and relaxed throat, ideal forward masked placement, doing more vocal exercises and practice, etc.), but hopefully she’ll return back soon!
Did Solar really support D5s? Wow, can D5 be counted into her supported range now or is it inconsistent? Like maybe G#3/A3 ~ C#5/D5? Also if Solar starts to develop head voice support or even just a connected one, will she be able to move to AA - P? I’m also really sad about the Wheein one, because of her regression quite everyone is attacking her when someone says she’s a great vocalist. People will reply like “no she regressed” or something like that instead of praising her…. Well given her personality and desire to have a “unique” voice I don’t think she’ll work on improving her voice anymore but modifying it to suit her tastes. Well if that’s the case (which 99% will be the case) I don’t think we’ll ever see any bouncing back from Wheeinie. Maybe we’ll even see more regression given the path she’s gone rn. Im so sad to see her like this though, but I hope she does what she wants without getting backlash for it.

Even if she starts to support head voice that doesn't guarantee that she will enter AA-P it's all about quality, like if she'll have consistent supported head voice till G5 but not open and full she can't be AA-P and her D5 is too inconsistent

Yes, speaking about Moonbyul, I discussed this in another comment, but the debate about Moonbyul being a mezzo can be open up to possible debate depending on more materials we get from her and how time can tell: for one, she does put in more effort to execute F#4-G4 that is closer to how a mezzo does it than how a soprano does it and while it could be underdeveloped technique, it's heavier/weightier and more intense (not easy-ish) and not really that bright compared to someone like Yuqi (who is an underdeveloped soprano) for instance; however, her lows aren't as developed as expected from a mezzo which can be the root of the debate as well. @@KittyTsundere I don't think yuqi is underdeveloped. She is a soprano but she once said that her voice was not that deep when she was a child. She once had fever for weeks so she would scream for her mother to come to her many times a day (this happened for weeks). So I think yuqi is not undeveloped she's a damaged soprano maybe she was a full lyric in her childhood. I think yuqi will be a shallow support vocalist for her entire life cuz her voice is damaged and she'd still not fully support even if she mixes lightly.

Yea, I think the Moonbyul being a mezzo can still be open up to debate since she's still a relatively underdeveloped vocalist with limited material to base off from (and also because there are not many mezzos of around Moonbyul's ability to compare to as well). Her lower register is indeed underdeveloped (which can be the root of the debate), but I think she puts in more effort in the F#4-G4 (despite being notes she can support) more than the typical soprano and closer to that of a typical mezzo...it could be because of underdeveloped technique (since she's still kind-of underdeveloped as a vocalist lol), but she does carry it with more natural weight/heaviness, intensity (it's not easy-ish despite being supported lol), and not that bright in contrast to Yuqi who is just an underdeveloped soprano. Yea same here for Wheein and Hwasa since they have my most favorite voices in the group (especially Hwasa, that dark vocal tone) and are my ultimate biases in the group as well. Both of them can be argued for high A-AA depending on who you ask, but the reason I put them down as mid-high A-AA is because of Hwasa's quite average lows, and Wheein's quite light and soft approach (even Hwasa with her own issues/inconsistencies can sound fuller than Wheein, especially in her mix) IMO. Either way, A-AA is quite fitting for them due to their respective issues and approaches now. Thanks for your support btw, and highly appreciate it! The next one will be released very soon, but it's going to be reallyyyyyyyy controversial (and also debatable) though not just because the person featuring in my next video is not really a technical vocalist (actually below average, and he has also regressed from debut as well similar to Hwasa's), but also because of the group he is associated with and I'm terrified of their fans lmao. 😬

She is also a mid C+ according to vocal channels while Wheein and Hwasa are still labeled as mid-high C+ so that’s why I’m not sure. A lot of people say NN is better than them when these tiers says otherwise? I am genuinely confused, not attacking btw.
I think you should reconsider some color combinations of fonts with the video they appear together with. For example, the white font is not visible in the green background in the Solarsido part change video clip. I'm not well-versed in the technical terms related to western music, and don't know much about the favoured approach for singing techniques(since they seem to be quite different from my country's approach), so I probably didn't understand this accurately 😅 But still, I could compare MMM's older and recent stuff and understand who's regressed or improved on my own, it's pretty obvious. I'm happy for Solar and Moonbyul's recent improvements. I thought working in a musical would tire Solar's voice, but she's seemed better than ever since then and it's the best kind of surprise. Moonbyul can sound pushy attempting to hit 'high' notes, but she's shown some improvement in 'Second World', I'm glad her vocal lessons are showing results. Meanwhile, Wheein and Hwasa's regression makes me genuinely sad as a fan. I didn't realise Hwasa's husky voice(specially since 2018) was a stylistic choice and not a natural progression🙂 Her voice sounds less damaged this year though, compared to 2019 and 2020 where she was genuinely struggling a lot of times. It feels sad to hear Wheein struggle to sing parts of MMM songs that she once sang 'effortlessly'. I hope they follow Moonbyul's example and start taking vocal lessons again(though now they'll be out on a world tour so I don't know how that'll happen). I do think Hwasa's voice had a slight husk to it even in debut era, so probably not all of it is stylistic choice?
Moonbyul has really found her voice. She loves singing. Solar can sing. Hwasa and WheeIn just need more immersion in practice tbh. Hwasa and all this modeling. Wheein and her anxiety problems that kept her down in 2019. Its just about consistent practice
For 2nd gen GGs, I can do Brown Eyed Girls (minus Miryo because she’s a rapper lol) since they’re my ult 2nd gen group (like at first, I thought Narsha was their strongest vocalist, but then turns out her mid-range isn’t as great or even that good as I thought lmao so that could be a starter lol) or maybe a vocal showcase of Jea since she’s the only active vocalist in the group lmao but that will be for the distant future. thanks for the insight! I don't really know all the technical stuff I just have a pretty decent ear. I have been curious about this since I saw the teasers for Second World and fan cams of Moonbyul singing in Japan. I thought she really did improve cause as much as I love her, when live, that woman is unstable, kinda pitchy and pushy?tight??(is that a thing?am I using the right terms?). I just wanted to see if it's real or if I'm just ignoring it all for the sake of liking the artist. As much as Solar did great in the play I'd say Mata Hari contributed to her improvement. If not in singing then in cleanliness and consistency. My opinion in stylistic singers is that they tend to sacrifice their pronunciation and technique for style. Which could be damaging. It's sad to see Wheesa actually regressed but that was IMO a very clear possibility when they choose to go that route. I do hope in my heart that they're just rusty though😂 hahaha
Quite a lot needs to be done IMO, for example watch MMM’s Delilah/Passion Flower performance, that is probably where Wheein proved herself to have the best technique. Look at how clean, thick, well-placed, bright, easy, and agile those belts from her were. Her lows in Passion Flower also had a lot of projection compared to Solar, because she had very good breath support. Even if she didn’t support below G#3, the quality of the support in her lower range was very very very good. It had much tonal quality, had no problem with projection, and had a lot of depth to it. However now? Even her lows have regressed, they sound extremely quiet and muffled because of her airy style. There’s no depth to it at all if you understand what I mean, and that’s the result of a bad breath support. To estimate where she is at now watch “Wheein at serizabeth medley” and see how she avoids belting at all costs, she immediately switches to falsetto in around A4/B4, and even those notes that were in chest lacked development, they sounded really thin. Well since most of her registers have become a bit underwhelming, her vocal agility probably regressed too. It’s because of her ease and freeness in her mixed register that she was able to execute some (decent) runs but if she can’t even utilize her mixed register now she can’t show her vocal agility. That’s sad news. Compare that to her rookie days, that’s alot of regression. The other growing issues have been : Nasality, Tightness, Throatiness But the largest problem of all is her avoiding the mixed register and always switching into falsetto (there is no way she is gonna improve if she keeps doing this), along with her lack of coordination in breath support. Good thing it’s just a lost in technique and not vocal damage of any sort. However, Hwasa really has vocal damage. Yes, vocal damage as in how Britney Spears lost her voice. The chance of Wheein improving? 1%. I think as a moomoo who has seen Wheeins personality on camera, she CAN improve but I don’t think she WANTS to. Improving is relatively easy for her, she can just get a vocal coach and based on how fast she learns (their CEO has always said that Wheein is the fastest to pick anything up, that’s why she’s a master at dancing and drumming, rapping, and every other skill), going back to her place shouldn’t be hard. However, she chose this type of voice so that she would stand out, like once on camera she even said “I’m insecure about my voice, Hwasa has a smoky voice and solar has a powerful one while mine doesn’t stand out,” it’s clear to see that she doesn’t care about technique at this point. She wants to modify her voice to make it unique.

I wouldn't say it's inconsistencies, but just rather lack of materials (I mean, she raps more than she sings as the rapper of the group) and how the improvement is just very recent. I mean the ranking is just an estimation anyways based on the materials we've got from her so far, so it may change depending on how much we've get from her over time. Also, from what I can understand, weak-to-average people can be inconsistent too, but not as much or as glaring as the weak people (maybe for the low w-a people, it could be slightly more glaring compared to the rest of the W-A but not as much the W residents lol). Also, when the W-A residents actually put in effort, it's actually kind-of solid (not average "solid" but not that shallow either) unlike the weak residents who are weak and shallow even when they put in the effort. For me, she's at low weak-to-average (though not necessarily the lowest, the person featured in my next vid will (debatably) make up my border/threshold of w-a lol) because while there's not much of her singing, she's really not that shallow tbh especially when she's not too airy such as in 1:08 and 1:15. Once she relieved all the tensions she has. Solar tends to push her notes, alongside a very noticeable tongue and neck tension prohibits her from achieving true resonance. Once all of those are fixed, she will soar up high 😂
I'm not totally closed to the idea of Moonbyul being a lower-set soprano, but I'm not sure if it really matters in her case since she is a pop/contemporary vocalist singing about the same range more or less as her higher-pitched counterparts, and still a relatively underdeveloped vocalist at that as well, so sub-typing will be harder and more exhausting for her since her technique isn't fully developed or established yet lol. Maybe time will tell, but for now, since her vocal characteristics (the ones that determine whether you're soprano/mezzo/etc.) significantly differ from the usual soprano, the safer option is mezzo for now. Nice suggestion though.
Yeah i really agree moonbyul is a lowest soprano rather than true mezzo at least in her average headline. Compare her voice to male vocalists who I think would be typed as 'lyric' mezzo if they were women (like haechan, doyoung, keonhee), moonbyul usually still sounds brighter and less intense, brassier than them (listen to their eb4-bb4). This is coming from a person who heard dozens of mamamoo songs in live and mv. The vids shows she sing good enough that i shouldn't have problem to type her as soprano. They not really aware of how dark, loud and intense/weighty the voice of lowest soprano like moonbyul yet. It's not even that tricky. Everyday's mezzo voice is essentially the same with highest tenor voice that fans always hear in kpop.
@@maryed7080 I'm a Baritone and the difference between tenors and baritone is quite similar to the difference between sopranos and mezzos. Sopranos and tenors are very bright like even if they aren't nasal or have deep voices

If you talking about light sopranos/tenors voice in relation to mezzo/baritone, then i understand that becuz soprano and tenor as voice types are manly and womanly. Girlish and boyish (very bright) voices are higher tenors/sopranos. They are the people who will sound very bright next to mezzos/baritones, not heavier sopranos/tenors. Development of chest voice would also affect the timbre in person which is why calling light sopranos/tenors with developed chest voice (hence why dark tone) baritones/mezzos are ridiculous and an automatically insult to them (baritone/mezzo).

It's sad that Wheein and Hwasa regressed after their debut. Hwasa has been trying to make her voice sound sexy and throaty but it takes a toll on the enunciation of words. Same with Wheein - I love her rifts but sometimes trying too much just strains her voice and sometimes the lyrics are unclear. Both Moonbyul and Solar have the best enunciation. Moonbyul's and Solar's solo careers are picking up and I love that they keep challenging themselves to try different genres. Love them all! I wonder if their agencies provide them with vocal coaches to help them with their weaknesses. Looking forward to their comeback tomorrow.
Yeah I agree with you about the enunciation (and also coincidentally on how I'm impressed with Solar's and Moonbyul's more recent stuff but not Wheein's and Hwasa's more recent stuff). IMO, Wheein's enunciation/vowel shaping issues can be traced to her throat shaping and nasality (which is why she can sound "chewy" at times) and Hwasa's enuncation/vowel shaping issues can be traced to her tongue tension issues.
I'm also really excited for their comeback tomorrow as well, and in fact, I'm actually planning to release a video regarding their comeback either tomorrow or Wednesday (depending on how progress goes), so stay around!

I appreciate the technical explanation and I totally agree with this ranking even as a wheein bias. I say Solar & Moonbyul has improved a lot. Moonbyul has great control on her voice, however, I often notice that she's singing/straining from her throat and she's having a hard time holding the notes. Did you know that pre-debut Wheein & Hwasa sounds very much alike? In the earlier songs of Mamamoo, I sometimes get confused who's singing. I think Hwasa was trying to have this signature sound and it might be taking a toll on her vocal health since it's not her natural style. As for Wheein, I have a feeling that her regression is more on psychological. Her latest album was done in a very chill vocal approach (she's in her "safe zone") but when Mamamoo came back promoting in festivals, a lot of fans noticed how her voice sounds much stronger that it's peaking through the speakers. But now during her Illella promotions, her voice is not as strong again, very evident since she's singing after Solar. So I agree with the inconsistencies of her vocal performance. I hope the ladies are taking care of their vocal health, especially with the upcoming world tour.

I totally agree. After their Melting, album Hwasa and Wheein changed their singing style to sound more original and interesting, however their voices aren´t as stronger as in the beginning (their legendary Immortal songs performances). Tbh, even though I am Moomoo and love them all, I can´t help but dislike that Hwasa decided to sing in more breathy and raspy style (it kinda reminds me how Rihanna changed her singing). I preferred her more jazzy and lively voice she used to have (eg. Fly me to the moon - cover).
Solar just sang One Last Time from Mata Hari in her Solarsido year-end Karaoke. I could feel there are some differences compared to her performance in the Mata Hari Press Call (2022.06.21). It seems to me that she has evolved in the second half of 2022. I don't know if it is a good material to show how much she had improved during the performances of Mata Hari in the summer of 2022. Besides, we don't get to see Solar showcases her lower register enough but I am amazed by her deep vocals in her newly released song Paradise, the theme song for a new DJ survival show WET! (World EDM Trend). Hope to hear more discussions about the evolutions of her vocal techniques in a separate video or together with her members as I love their voices so much:)

Just found this video yesterday and it is very informative. Thank you very much! I love all of their voices and appreciate how they can add distinct layers to Mamamoo's songs. I am happy to see Solar, our YongSun-nie, has stayed consistent and keep improving over the years, especially after her Mata Hari experience. It is a pity that we only have very limited materials about the musical as what we have are from its sitzprobe, press call, pre-recording (Some said The Girl I Used To Be was filmed before the premiere), and Amazing Saturday. Many reviews from Moomoos and general musical fans who attended the musical said Solar had improved even more throughout the period of performances, significantly in both singing and acting. Hope EMK will release VOD(s) for later performances.
I love the way Solar executes jaw/Gospel vibrato, if that is what she is/was doing, as I find her executions usually fit the senses of the songs she performed very well since I am not a fan of 'classical' vibrato and I am completely biased. (I love her voice the most). However, because of this video, I learned the difference and hope she can showcase 'improvement' in the future because the Mata Hari reviews that I have seen also mentioned something about her vibrato in later performances. I wish there could be an analysis about how Solar switches vocal techniques for and after the musical. Some said the ways she sang in IMAGE (5:52am) and After Love are a little bit different than before but I am no expert of vocal techniques. Or, is there anything noticeable in their recent comeback, such as her vocal in ILLELLA, or other songs?
For the regressions about Wheein and Hwasa, I am wondering what if they have decided to perform Immortal Songs medley again in their world tour, will practices help them get back to their previous vocal states? As regressions are probably due to lack of executions and stylish choices.
As for Moonbyul, she might improve even more since her dedication in vocal training and her recent competition in Second World. I hope there will be an update when more materials are available.
Wheein needs to go back to her ways. We all know she could, because when she wants to, she can really make clear sounding notes(see her live stages for her solo stuff). It’s not like she forgot how to do the things she did before, that’s hard to remove in her system and also muscle memory. There maybe four reasons why I think she regressed:
1. Fatigue - Mamamoo have been working nonstop either as a group and solo. No matter how good a technique is, with a packed schedule, your throat muscles will feel the fatigue one way or another.
2. Drinking Habits - I am not sure how soju works, but alcohol is a singer’s great enemy. Alcohol dries your throat, which may lead to a increased friction when engaging throat muscles. That’s really bad and Wheein is a heavy drinker.
3. Confidence - we have seen her downfall after her diagnosis. She shows insecurities with her voice, that’s why she dodges a lot these days. She, firsthand, experienced the public scrutiny. This may have taken a toll on her and might want to not make mistakes on stage, hence, the countless dodging.
4. Preference - she was well known for the angelic voice she showed during her performances, the light airy tone is well received by the public. It maybe a reason.
These are just my assumptions based on what I observed for following her for the entirety of her career.
Ohh this was so interesting to watch! I don't understand much of anything about singing, but I've sometimes wondered in both Wheein and Hwasa's cases if they maybe used to sing a bit better before (or well, I don't know if "better" is the best word, but anyway). So it was kind of cool to learn that possibly I wasn't entirely off the mark :D
Solar and Moonbyul both seem to have so much drive and determination career-wise that it's not surprising to me at all that they've improved. I really respect them, even if I can't really relate lol :D Thanks for the video!
Man, this it's harsh, but trained musicians are harsh and know the limits of their instrument/voice. I appreciate this kind of analysis, cause we (myself included) tend to overreact about our faves.

Right. Wheein was actually my top Mamamoo vocalist until Mata Hari happened. Solar improved a lot after her musical. Moonbyul, although my bias has always been the least effective vocalist in Mamamoo. She's great. Just that she's in Mamamoo 😅No need to explain that.

Hi! Thanks a lot for making this video, I’ve been following Mamamoo’s journey as a group for a bit, and as a moomoo I pay attention to the member’s vocal health and evolution a lot! I’ve seen people argue a lot about Wheein and Hwasa’s vocal regression on a post, so I tried to search for reliable sources criticizing the member’s vocals (I’ve seen you leaving multiple comments on another vocal analysis of Wheein!). I’m not knowledgeable in vocals so I do hope that as someone who knows a lot on this subject you can keep up with the member’s evolution and keep us updated (I see that you’re keeping a table that you will update).
On a side note, I’m really really worried about Wheein’s voice. I want her to continue singing until she’s old! It’s true that she lost a bit of her touch, but I hope that she takes care of her vocal health and can bounce back, even though maybe she’ll never sing like in her prime again. She’s aware of her regression so I hope that it’s one of her priority. Seeing her sometimes in pain or discomforted trying to sing is really heartbreaking to me.
They are all incredible and multitalented, but Wheein and Hwasa need to take better care of their voices, because even for me, who is not that knowledgeable in singing, I had noticed a certain decline in their voices, while Solar and Moonbyel only progress

As someone who is Wheein and Hwasa ult and as among my most favorite voices in KPOP, same. 😭 It’s just all hoping that they can take care of their voices well and doing more vocal practices and exercises (would definitely be helpful to refresh back to the basics as well especially for Wheein), so that they don’t regress further (I don’t want it to be another Park Bom/late 5H era Lauren Jauregui case ever again).

I’m also really sad about the Wheein one, because of her regression quite everyone is attacking her when someone says she’s a great vocalist. People will reply like “no she regressed” or something like that instead of praising her…. Well given her personality and desire to have a “unique” voice I don’t think she’ll work on improving her voice anymore but modifying it to suit her tastes. Well if that’s the case (which 99% will be the case) I don’t think we’ll ever see any bouncing back from Wheeinie. Maybe we’ll even see more regression given the path she’s gone rn. Im so sad to see her like this though, but I hope she does what she wants without getting backlash for it.

Even if she starts to support head voice that doesn't guarantee that she will enter AA-P it's all about quality, like if she'll have consistent supported head voice till G5 but not open and full she can't be AA-P and her D5 is too inconsistent

Yes, speaking about Moonbyul, I discussed this in another comment, but the debate about Moonbyul being a mezzo can be open up to possible debate depending on more materials we get from her and how time can tell: for one, she does put in more effort to execute F#4-G4 that is closer to how a mezzo does it than how a soprano does it and while it could be underdeveloped technique, it's heavier/weightier and more intense (not easy-ish) and not really that bright compared to someone like Yuqi (who is an underdeveloped soprano) for instance; however, her lows aren't as developed as expected from a mezzo which can be the root of the debate as well.

@@KittyTsundere I don't think yuqi is underdeveloped. She is a soprano but she once said that her voice was not that deep when she was a child. She once had fever for weeks so she would scream for her mother to come to her many times a day (this happened for weeks). So I think yuqi is not undeveloped she's a damaged soprano maybe she was a full lyric in her childhood. I think yuqi will be a shallow support vocalist for her entire life cuz her voice is damaged and she'd still not fully support even if she mixes lightly.

Yea, I think the Moonbyul being a mezzo can still be open up to debate since she's still a relatively underdeveloped vocalist with limited material to base off from (and also because there are not many mezzos of around Moonbyul's ability to compare to as well). Her lower register is indeed underdeveloped (which can be the root of the debate), but I think she puts in more effort in the F#4-G4 (despite being notes she can support) more than the typical soprano and closer to that of a typical mezzo...it could be because of underdeveloped technique (since she's still kind-of underdeveloped as a vocalist lol), but she does carry it with more natural weight/heaviness, intensity (it's not easy-ish despite being supported lol), and not that bright in contrast to Yuqi who is just an underdeveloped soprano.
Yea same here for Wheein and Hwasa since they have my most favorite voices in the group (especially Hwasa, that dark vocal tone) and are my ultimate biases in the group as well. Both of them can be argued for high A-AA depending on who you ask, but the reason I put them down as mid-high A-AA is because of Hwasa's quite average lows, and Wheein's quite light and soft approach (even Hwasa with her own issues/inconsistencies can sound fuller than Wheein, especially in her mix) IMO. Either way, A-AA is quite fitting for them due to their respective issues and approaches now.

I think you should reconsider some color combinations of fonts with the video they appear together with. For example, the white font is not visible in the green background in the Solarsido part change video clip.
I'm not well-versed in the technical terms related to western music, and don't know much about the favoured approach for singing techniques(since they seem to be quite different from my country's approach), so I probably didn't understand this accurately 😅 But still, I could compare MMM's older and recent stuff and understand who's regressed or improved on my own, it's pretty obvious.
I'm happy for Solar and Moonbyul's recent improvements. I thought working in a musical would tire Solar's voice, but she's seemed better than ever since then and it's the best kind of surprise. Moonbyul can sound pushy attempting to hit 'high' notes, but she's shown some improvement in 'Second World', I'm glad her vocal lessons are showing results.
Meanwhile, Wheein and Hwasa's regression makes me genuinely sad as a fan. I didn't realise Hwasa's husky voice(specially since 2018) was a stylistic choice and not a natural progression🙂 Her voice sounds less damaged this year though, compared to 2019 and 2020 where she was genuinely struggling a lot of times. It feels sad to hear Wheein struggle to sing parts of MMM songs that she once sang 'effortlessly'. I hope they follow Moonbyul's example and start taking vocal lessons again(though now they'll be out on a world tour so I don't know how that'll happen). I do think Hwasa's voice had a slight husk to it even in debut era, so probably not all of it is stylistic choice?

Hwasa and WheeIn just need more immersion in practice tbh. Hwasa and all this modeling. Wheein and her anxiety problems that kept her down in 2019. Its just about consistent practice

I have been curious about this since I saw the teasers for Second World and fan cams of Moonbyul singing in Japan. I thought she really did improve cause as much as I love her, when live, that woman is unstable, kinda pitchy and pushy?tight??(is that a thing?am I using the right terms?). I just wanted to see if it's real or if I'm just ignoring it all for the sake of liking the artist.
As much as Solar did great in the play I'd say Mata Hari contributed to her improvement. If not in singing then in cleanliness and consistency.
My opinion in stylistic singers is that they tend to sacrifice their pronunciation and technique for style. Which could be damaging. It's sad to see Wheesa actually regressed but that was IMO a very clear possibility when they choose to go that route. I do hope in my heart that they're just rusty though😂 hahaha
Can Wheein be the strongest Mamamoo vocalist again?? What does she need to restore her place??
Quite a lot needs to be done IMO, for example watch MMM’s Delilah/Passion Flower performance, that is probably where Wheein proved herself to have the best technique. Look at how clean, thick, well-placed, bright, easy, and agile those belts from her were. Her lows in Passion Flower also had a lot of projection compared to Solar, because she had very good breath support. Even if she didn’t support below G#3, the quality of the support in her lower range was very very very good. It had much tonal quality, had no problem with projection, and had a lot of depth to it. However now? Even her lows have regressed, they sound extremely quiet and muffled because of her airy style. There’s no depth to it at all if you understand what I mean, and that’s the result of a bad breath support. To estimate where she is at now watch “Wheein at serizabeth medley” and see how she avoids belting at all costs, she immediately switches to falsetto in around A4/B4, and even those notes that were in chest lacked development, they sounded really thin. Well since most of her registers have become a bit underwhelming, her vocal agility probably regressed too. It’s because of her ease and freeness in her mixed register that she was able to execute some (decent) runs but if she can’t even utilize her mixed register now she can’t show her vocal agility. That’s sad news. Compare that to her rookie days, that’s alot of regression. The other growing issues have been : Nasality, Tightness, Throatiness
But the largest problem of all is her avoiding the mixed register and always switching into falsetto (there is no way she is gonna improve if she keeps doing this), along with her lack of coordination in breath support. Good thing it’s just a lost in technique and not vocal damage of any sort. However, Hwasa really has vocal damage. Yes, vocal damage as in how Britney Spears lost her voice.
The chance of Wheein improving? 1%. I think as a moomoo who has seen Wheeins personality on camera, she CAN improve but I don’t think she WANTS to. Improving is relatively easy for her, she can just get a vocal coach and based on how fast she learns (their CEO has always said that Wheein is the fastest to pick anything up, that’s why she’s a master at dancing and drumming, rapping, and every other skill), going back to her place shouldn’t be hard. However, she chose this type of voice so that she would stand out, like once on camera she even said “I’m insecure about my voice, Hwasa has a smoky voice and solar has a powerful one while mine doesn’t stand out,” it’s clear to see that she doesn’t care about technique at this point. She wants to modify her voice to make it unique.

Hwasa regression is very understandable because she try her voice deep and dark even in her talk voice. Her real voice are light and bright tho
Also I thought Moonbyul is estimated to be an E/E+ tier because of her inconsistencies, as she is just as shallow and inconsistent as members like Mina and Chaeyoung, so what made her place in D-? Just wondering 😓

I wouldn't say it's inconsistencies, but just rather lack of materials (I mean, she raps more than she sings as the rapper of the group) and how the improvement is just very recent. I mean the ranking is just an estimation anyways based on the materials we've got from her so far, so it may change depending on how much we've get from her over time. Also, from what I can understand, weak-to-average people can be inconsistent too, but not as much or as glaring as the weak people (maybe for the low w-a people, it could be slightly more glaring compared to the rest of the W-A but not as much the W residents lol). Also, when the W-A residents actually put in effort, it's actually kind-of solid (not average "solid" but not that shallow either) unlike the weak residents who are weak and shallow even when they put in the effort.
For me, she's at low weak-to-average (though not necessarily the lowest, the person featured in my next vid will (debatably) make up my border/threshold of w-a lol) because while there's not much of her singing, she's really not that shallow tbh especially when she's not too airy such as in 1:08 and 1:15. However, it may change once we get more materials from her. I also think she does fine down to G3/G#3 and up to G4/G#4 based on the materials we get so far. Not the best or that great, but acceptable enough.

Once she relieved all the tensions she has. Solar tends to push her notes, alongside a very noticeable tongue and neck tension prohibits her from achieving true resonance. Once all of those are fixed, she will soar up high 😂

I'm not totally closed to the idea of Moonbyul being a lower-set soprano, but I'm not sure if it really matters in her case since she is a pop/contemporary vocalist singing about the same range more or less as her higher-pitched counterparts, and still a relatively underdeveloped vocalist at that as well, so sub-typing will be harder and more exhausting for her since her technique isn't fully developed or established yet lol. Maybe time will tell, but for now, since her vocal characteristics (the ones that determine whether you're soprano/mezzo/etc.) significantly differ from the usual soprano, the safer option is mezzo for now. Nice suggestion though.
Yeah i really agree moonbyul is a lowest soprano rather than true mezzo at least in her average headline. Compare her voice to male vocalists who I think would be typed as 'lyric' mezzo if they were women (like haechan, doyoung, keonhee), moonbyul usually still sounds brighter and less intense, brassier than them (listen to their eb4-bb4). This is coming from a person who heard dozens of mamamoo songs in live and mv. The vids shows she sing good enough that i shouldn't have problem to type her as soprano. They not really aware of how dark, loud and intense/weighty the voice of lowest soprano like moonbyul yet. It's not even that tricky. Everyday's mezzo voice is essentially the same with highest tenor voice that fans always hear in kpop.
@@maryed7080 I'm a Baritone and the difference between tenors and baritone is quite similar to the difference between sopranos and mezzos. Sopranos and tenors are very bright like even if they aren't nasal or have deep voices

If you talking about light sopranos/tenors voice in relation to mezzo/baritone, then i understand that becuz soprano and tenor as voice types are manly and womanly. Girlish and boyish (very bright) voices are higher tenors/sopranos. They are the people who will sound very bright next to mezzos/baritones, not heavier sopranos/tenors. Development of chest voice would also affect the timbre in person which is why calling light sopranos/tenors with developed chest voice (hence why dark tone) baritones/mezzos are ridiculous and an automatically insult to them (baritone/mezzo).
