You can tell by looking at the center. A freewheel has a thick ring that has bearings behind it and threads on to the wheel. A cassette mounts to the free hub that is on the wheel and it has the bearing in it.
Just curious, which freewheel are you using in the video? Been looking for a more attractive, yet reliable freewheel than the new Shimano ones with the white lettering
Nice video. So to confirm, the tool is required for removal but not for installation? My old freewheel loosened on its own during a ride and dropped the ball bearings. I'll try to get the remaining piece off using vice grips and then replace with a new freewheel. If I can hand tighten and use some pedal pressure like you said that saves me from buying the tool
I probably meant a Free Hub. Where the part with the ratchet is a separate part. Will I only discover the difference once I have taken off the cassette like you have done.
I bought the removal tool twice already and they both stripped trying to remove 😢 all I wanted was to switch my stock with the shimano mega range and I’ve failed miserably 😩

For some reason my bikes have this in reverse and my older 90s road bike uses cassette but new e-bike has freewheel
