  • Buick, formally the Buick Motor Division, is an upscale automobile brand of the American manufacturer General Motors. For much of its existence in the North American market, Buick has been marketed as a premium automobile brand, selling luxury vehicles positioned above GM's mainstream brands, e.g. Chevrolet, while below the flagship luxury Cadillac division. Buick retains the distinction of being the oldest active American marque of automobile, and the original Buick Motor Company was a cornerstone of the establishment of General Motors in 1908. Buick, founded in 1899 in Jackson, Michigan, is one of the oldest automobile brands in the world and the oldest in America. Autocar, originally an automobile maker but currently strictly a heavy truck maker, and Oldsmobile, a now defunct early auto maker owned by GM, were both founded in 1897. Studebaker was founded in 1852, but didn't begin producing automobiles until 1902; Ford produced his first car in 1896 but did not start the Ford Motor Co. until 1903, and during the period in between was involved with other automobile manufacturers such as Cadillac. It was founded by David Dunbar Buick as the Buick Auto-Vim and Power Company, an internal combustion engine manufacturer. Before the establishment of General Motors, GM founder William C. Durant served as Buick's general manager, while his friend Louis Chevrolet worked as a racing driver for Buick and later learned automotive design working there. Buick's Standard Six and their Master Six were dramatically restyled for 1928. They were given plain crown fenders, bullet-type headlights, sculpted cowl, hood and radiator contours and a reconfigured chassis which allowed the bodies to be built lower. Engineering advances also accompanied the 1928 models, with such improvements as an H-pattern shifter, hydraulic shock absorbers and a revised valve design. Buick used the Master Six name beginning in the mid-1920s. The 1925 Buick used the same engine used in the 24-Six of 1924. Several new body styles became available during this year. The Standard Six engine produced 50 horsepower while the Master Six was fitted with a 70 horsepower engine. The Standard Six bodystyles rested on a wheelbase that measured 114.3-inches while the Master Six had a 120- or 128-inch platform. The name Master Six would continue through 1928. By 1928, the horsepower in the Standard Six was rated at 63 horsepower while the Master Six had 77 horsepower. This Model 47-S Deluxe is a four door sedan that seats six adults. The new bullet headlamps sit on top of the curved fenders. The wood spoke artillery wheels and running board are in excellent condition. Note that the steering wheel is made of wood, and the instrument cluster is centered on the dash as was the custom back then. Spacious room in the back seat with plenty of window glass present. The rear bumper is split to allow a centered taillight within the rear mounted spare tire that sits before the gas tank. Note also the padded roof and suicide doors. Restored very nicely in two-tone blue and black, this Buick shows itself as the large luxury brand it had become in 1928. Thanks very much for viewing this 1928 Buick Model 47-S sedan.

Hey Warren. Nice looking Buick. I've never seen anything this vintage. I think the oldest running Buick I've seen was a 1932 Buick.

You don't see too many old Buicks of this era especially in a nicely done restoration. Thanks for enjoying.
