- This is kind of like an old-school Creepy Bad Endings video. Apologies for the somewhat ear-splitting music.
Bad Endings. I don't know about anyone else, but they terrify me. Just when the hero(es) thought everything was finally right, just when it looked like peace had finally returned to the world, something happens that, at best, creates a bittersweet victory and, at worst, spoils everything and the enemies win, despite everything that happened throughout your adventure. Bad endings don't give you any second chances, you screwed things up for everyone and you must pay dearly..

If you got the crystal ball, and then went through the magic door, and then went through the secret levels, and then beat Baron Von Bubba without a friend, it gives you the password to the level B2, not level 99.
This game punishes you for not having friends, how rude.

That would tick me off. It's like the game has to punish me for not being a social butterfly?
You just need 2 controllers and to have more then 1 life left (shown as 1 or higher in the bottom left corner), pause, then use a button (i forget which) to revive/bring in player 2.
It actually seems to punish you for not living in the world of "my little pony".
***** You don't even need a second controller. You can just use the Start/Select trick to give a life to Player 2, then pop Super Drunk with Player 1.

I Lost The Game
No, I just play video games.
So Bub and Bob are two kids with alcoholic parents who abuse them when they drink.
To cope with their situation, Bub would make up stories about the two of them transforming into dragons to fight off the monsters that made their parents this way. Bob liked the stories, but anytime Bub suggested confronting their parents, Bob was never brave enough to, and Bub always failed.
One day, at the very last minute, Bob finally joined his brother, and they confronted their parents together. Their clear devotion to their family touched their parents, leading them to seriously attempt to turn their lives around. Happy end.
That could've been a better story
More like the two kids run away from the abuse at home and joing the Catholic church.
And they lived happily ever after >.^
So, the final boss is the character Super Drunk... And turns out to be Bub and Bob's parents. Does that mean Bub and Bob's parents were actually abusive alcoholics, and this whole game is about two brothers confronting their abused past? Am I reading too much into this?
More like the developers were super drunk to be this assholeish.
I'd say so since how do the girlfriends, bubbles, toasters, and skeleton whale mastermind figure in?
The forms taken is just imagery, and the enemies likely represent the drinks their parents have; but the drunk parents likely would have been forcing them not to see their girlfriends, and the mastermind is likely representative of the alcohol, itself, or wherever they got their alcohol from.

Bubble Bobble's bad endings just scream "Born In The Arcade", don't they?
So, what they are saying is, I can't get a good ending just because I need a co-op partner? It's pretty much like saying you got Ending F in DR2 OTR because you didn't have Chuck Greene assisting you in the final battle with Agent S. It's like saying you can't save the world in FF VI without saving ALL friends.

"Super Drunk"? Boy, that's the worst name I've ever heard for a villain. Is he an alcoholic or something? Maybe that's why he attacks with in a bubble, he hiccups it? Alcoholism in a kid's game is pretty odd.
In the Western version of the game (and possibly some others, not sure), they changed his name to "Grumple Grommit". Which isnt a much better name, really... But I know NoA sure as heck wasnt going to leave the word "drunk" in something like this.

Bubble Bobble's bad ending is actually more enraging than creepy.

I think I might have played Bust-a-Move in the arcade once, but I prefer Bub & Bob's platform games.

Oh man, I remember playing this game for hours when I was young! Good times! :D
The bad ending music reminds me of the song "Quiet" from Cave Story.
The bad endings are only dark if you get the good ending. Basically, the final boss is their parents. Two children, transformed into bubble breathing dragons, *kill their parents* !
Let that sink in for a bit.
Oh, and since their parents were the final boss (named Super Drunk), I'm assuming that their parents just like drinking as their favorite pasttime (since the boss throws *a lot* of bottles).
So they're just enjoying their alchoholic beverages...and their children just waltz in and kill them without so much as a second thought. "But the parents were drunk," you say. "They just did it in self defense," you say. It doesn't take away from the fact that they just killed their parents instead of trying to just talk and negotiate!
Then there's the fact that those people trapped in bubbles weren't moving at all. They may have been in stasis and *conscious* the whole time with them slowly going mad! ("And I Must Scream", indeed!) That, or they've been slowly suffocating (I'm assuming this, since they're blue when you get to them). Just how long have they been down there?!?
Then there's the fact that the arena was made of skulls. How many others suffered from the same fate before perishing?
Jeez, this game is dark.

It's more likely meant to be a "let's squeeze as much money out of this as we can" scenario, than a "let's inspire teamwork and cooperation" scenario.
The NES version also had a secret music track, which you could only find after getting a good ending and then browsing through the audio library at the end.
Wait a second, Baron Von Blubba/Skel is the main villain of the Bubble Bobble series and not the Super Drunk?
I like that actually, you can't take the Super Drunk seriously and now it makes sense why Baron von Blubba/Skel was the final boss Bubble Bobble 3 (final game chronologically) instead of the Super Drunk
Skel Monsta isn't the main villain of the series, Hyper Drunk of Bubble Symphony is.
Friendship is Magic... before it was mainstream!
Eh, I kind of like friendship themes, but mostly the more realistic ones. It isn't going to magic away everything bad that's ever happened to you. If it weren't for their combined skills, and efforts, you wouldn't have won the true final battle. That said, I hate it when it's very heavy-handed, and prefer a subtle approach to it.

Wow Bubble Bobble has unbelievably high standards for a "True Ending". I swear, I'm not very good at Bubble Bobble, and if I ever beat the 100 levels, I would expect some sort of satisfying ending, BUT NOPE. APPARENTLY YOU HAVEN'T EARNED IT.

Look at the level number for floor 100: it says 80! And that crystal crap is cryptic as all hell! you could play the game 100 times before bumping into that door!
That 80 actually represents the boss' health. Notice at 1:55 it decreases to 79 when he is hit.
Wait so your parents are Super Drunk. So abusive alcoholic parents who keep their kids away from their girlfriends? And you basically kill them in the Bad endings. Wow I don't know if that's on purpose but the subtext makes the whole premise of this game pretty dark in retrospect. Just like that other Taito game you showed actually. The Happy end is basically Bub and Bob confronting their parents together and convincing them to give up drinking and be better parents.

I never thought before that Mama and Papa were actually Super Drunk. I just thought they were held captive somewhere and appeared after you defeated him. So if they died in the bad endings, that must mean Bub and Bob killed their own parents... which of course makes those endings even more disturbing! Also, the best ending in the arcade version ended on a somewhat chilling note about the parents...
The other part about the NES version, is that it forces you to do Super Bubble Bobble in order to get the best ending, since Super Drunk doesn't get destroyed in normal mode.
Every version of this game worth it's weight in salt requires the Super Mode for the best ending. The Sega Master System version makes you play through the regular 100 levels, then 100 more, all in succession (considered the Super Mode) to truly defeat the game, the only version to do that.

Wait... why are the parents beating up they're own kids? And why do they become a villain called "Super Drunk"? ... Holy Shit this game just went DARK!
Here's my best guess: What if I told you there was only one Super Drunk? But with time travel shenanigans?! Could it be that by the time you reach Phase 99, Super Drunk ate the parents, completely. Gone. So no, Super Drunk isn't the parents... but he ate them. Your only hope is the magic crystal and door, that takes you back in time for every level you complete, it makes sense because in all 4 routes,
1P Normal Ending: Get to Phase 100 without getting to the magic crystal/door in time in Phase 99, thus being unable to complete the special levels, and defeat Super Drunk by yourself.
2P Normal Ending: Same criteria as 1P Normal Ending, but this time, defeat Super Drunk with two players.
1P Special Ending: Reach phase 99, grab the crystal, go through the door, complete the special levels, then defeat Super Drunk by yourself.
2P Special Ending: (Best Ending!): Reach phase 99, grab the crystal, go through the door, complete the special levels, then defeat Super Drunk with another player.
it makes sense because you always fight Super Drunk in the same place. and both special routes require the crystal and door. Maybe the whole love and friendship stuff is Super Drunk's weakness, which is why he could possibly eat the parents in the 1P Special Ending, but can't/ doesn't in the 2P Special Ending. Oh, you would LOVE Rainbow Island. That shit has one of the creepiest bad endings of all, complete with bone-chilling 8-bit depressing music and everything. I don't remember if it was supposed to be the sequel or the prequel to Bubble Bobble, but all I know is that you're playing as the same guys except they're human this time.

The music in this game with headphones on is as punishing as the bad endings.
so they made the NES version easier? try going to levels 20,30, and 40 without dying to get the 1st good ending. 2nd good ending is same but its Super Bubble Bobble, basically hard mode. Arcade's a son of a bitch, thank God for save states😰
