Thank you! I enjoyed all four reviews, but especially Ali Smith because it was chosen for my next book group but I wasn't present when it was described. Now I am very excited about it.
So great to listen to how you connected with and appreciated Sight - I loved this novel so much. Interesting your idea how it might have worked better as linked short stories. And I completely agree with you about Ordinary People and how crowded the writing feels. And that part about the daughter (maybe) being possessed didn't feel like it belonged at all. I guess all that detail was meant to show how the characters felt oppressed by the ordinariness of life - but it makes it a drag to actually read, right? And I've not read Spring yet but I'm always so so excited by new Ali Smith. :) Good luck with your exam at work! I just read the new novel The Doll Factory and loved it.
Ohhh I am in the middle of Ordinary People and already got frustrated (just frustrated about other people's marital problem lol) and this video kind of making me want to give up 🙈But I think I will still continue reading them since I'm reading the longlist (again!!). Yay for Spring and The Girl Aquarium !! Got those two lovely books recently and can't wait to start! ❤️
Ooooh I’m sorry 😂 to be honest though, in hindsight I wish I had given up but as I went through I still wanted to know what would happen to the marriages despite all the frustrations! Xx
Really interesting to hear your thoughts on Ordinary People. I really enjoyed it - but I didn't think it was exceptional. And the random supernatural element kind of threw me off, haha.
I read Normal People in April, since it didn't come out in the US until last month. I'm happy to say it lived up to the hype! I probably heard about it on your channel first; you read and reviewed it before any other booktuber I watch.
I’m so pleased! Haha, I did read it quite early as I was sent a proof, but it also probably feels like that as the hype has been NONSTOP 🤣 I’m glad it lived up to it for you! Xx
I absolutely loved Sight. I agree that her writing style was right up my street. There was something so nostalgic about it. I think I would've preferred not to have the sections on x-rays & psychoanalysis, I wanted to hear more about her. Felt more like memoir a lot of the time. But overall loved it. Haven't read the others yet but they're all on my radar.
I liked her writing style but I found the ghost stuff a bit weird and it brought the book down a bit overall. I appreciate your colour/cover coordination. I just got Spring from the library and I am PUMPED!
SO, I DNF'd Ordinary People at page 88 for similar reasons--I was incredibly sad all the time and kept thinking about my marriage with Tom, and he was like, 'Uh, perhaps don't read it...' but I ultimately stopped because I didn't want to pick it back up again. I agree with the comments about her writing... there was a part of me that really wanted to enjoy it, but I felt a bit bored, despite all this incredible tension.
I’m reading Ordinary People now and I’m not loving it. I’m actually having a hard time going back to it each time I put it down. So it’s nice to hear that someone else didn’t love it either.
Congratulations on getting married!:)💕💛 Interesting selection of books...'Sight' and 'The Girl Aquarium' in particular seem quite amusing. On a side note..I don't wanna seem vain but did u get your ears pierced or are those clip ons cause I was thinking of getting my ears pierced!:)
@@LaurenWade oh...ok! U are beautiful inside out anyways! Could you seem to give any advice on how to be assertive and headstrong as an introverted and quite person who struggles to communicate firmly....I know this seems really out of the blue but it would be interesting to hear your advice:))
@@LaurenWade That is so sweet of you and I would love to hear your advice on having a strong and confident personality as I have been watching your videos for a while since 2014/15!!☺
Ordinary people was a no for me as well. The premise sounded promising but there were problems in this book and i have to agree i think it was the editing.
I didn't love Sight it has to be said. I found it all a bit convoluted and pretentious. I just didnt click with it which is a shame as I loved her short stories. i am very much looking forward to Jen's collection, am saving it as a treat. Ordinary People I liked and once I got used to her listy style I was quite into it and what it means to be in a relationship that is breaking down. It was just a bit London heavy for me ha. Spring I meant to read this bank holiday and didn't, maybe the next one.
A little bit. No drawn-out affairs. It's not as cringey as usual (I hate cheating in books too) but the characters are still just having all these issues because they don't communicate. That's the reason I normally hate cheating in books, so if you're like that too I would skip this because it's full of it.
I know exactly what you mean with Ordinary People - it engaged me, I was curious about the characters but the overall experience left me feeling unsatisfied. It felt very autobiographical and bloggish, but it seemed to go nowhere, and then she conveniently inserts a scene where the two female characters spell out the message of the book (how parenthood destroys romance). It lacked layers, nuance, complexity for me.
Sight sounds incredibly interesting. I’m definitely picking up the girl aquarium it sounds so imaginative, I loved Jen’s book of short stories!

Ah good, I hope you enjoy it!

i need to try Jen's books! Ali Smith is an author i've been meaning to try for ages 🙈
great video
How do u read so many books I take forever to read one specially when I have to study for uni
I find it very helpful to deliberately read every day before I go to sleep - even if it is just for 10 minutes, you are always moving forward :)

Is there cheating in Ordinary People? I want to give it a try but cheating, especially marital infidelities in books just really really gross me out.

Sarah K thank you for letting me know! 🙏
WILL YOU EVER LEARN TO TRUST ME AGAIN?
In time, perhaps, but I just don’t know. It’s all too raw 😩

Ugh, EXACTLY, like this is some brand new concept that hasn’t been discussed before 🙄
