4 years later, your video saved the day for me. Those electrical connections can be a real PITA but tenacity paid off and I got them disconnected, took the switch plate off, cleaned and emery clothed the copper slides and buttons, reassemble and it worked like a charm..still, give me a 49 Ford or Chevy truck with NO sensors and I’m in my happy place. Thank you immensely for your video!! 🙏

Just wanted to add my voice to the chorus of thanks; my climate control packed up last week and while I'd narrowed it down to the fan switch I had little idea how to proceed. Thanks to your video I managed to dismantle, clean and rebuild the main switch with the help of a scouring pad (no sandpaper in the toolshed), some contact cleaner and silicone grease. Everything is working perfectly. Saved me a fair few quid there. OEM repairs are not cheap in the UK. One thing I did notice (as did 'zx8401ztv' in the comments, apparently) is that because one of the two long tracks is shorter than the other, the bottom-left and bottom-centre pins will only be shorted in switch positions other than off, not "any position". It should have been obvious but it caught me out the first time I reassembled the switch and those contacts didn't immediately buzz out with the multimeter. I actually disassembled it a second time before realising I was looking for a fault that wasn't there. Those poor tabs! If I had to hazard a guess I'd say those two pins are an override for the A/C, so it can only be enabled when the fan is turning at any speed. But it really is a guess. My Santa Fe is an '02 and the whole panel has a different arrangement at the rear with two large assemblies either side of the fan switch driven by the front panel knobs, one for the temperature setting and one for the airflow control. There's also a separate box mounted above the fan switch with its own power input connector, that seems to be connected to the A/C control buttons and also feeds three discrete lighting bulbs via a miniature loom. It looks as though Hyundai redesigned everything in the intervening four years and made it simpler. Maybe they changed from discrete controls to electronic controls, but kept the old-school fan switch for reliability? It's actually quite a neat design. You expect to find a cluster of wafer switches or something back there, but it's just a rack and pinion driving a slider. Either way I'm glad for videos like yours. My venerable old Santy has reached the age where various bits are starting to pack up, and while I love a good excuse to start pulling stuff apart it's nice to have something to give me the confidence that I'm attacking the problem in the right way.

When this last switch started to go out, I decided to see if I could fix it. It literally took me 20 min, and a good portion of that was locating the tools I needed!

The wife came home earlier and said the a/c didn't work.....so I checked out some fuses, belts, and then decided to watch a video. Came across your video....and sure enough....that was the problem. Checking the switch contacts would have been about the last thing on my list. Cleaned them up, works perfectly. Thank you very much.
Repaired mine many times. Just done again today. This time the slider contacts had eventually worn down and so weren’t making contact. The fix was, I placed a blob of solder on the three raised contact points. Sanded down gently until all at the same height. Stretched the spring a little and works fine. I had to add the solder as the contact has a limited travel and it had reached its maximum.
Thank you very much. Just purchased a 02 santa fe and your video help with the diag. I purchased the resistor and motor and neither solved the problem. With you video I was able to find the issue and order a new switch to fix the issue.
Great video. I have a 2005 Hyundai Santa Fe and I had replaced that same fan switch 3X over the last few years. Each time it worked for awhile, then I had to start wedging coins at the bottom of the switch to keep it on. Eventually, it would just quit working altogether. After watching this video, and seeing how easy it was to pull the switch apart, I decided to tackle it by repairing the switch...rather than replacing it. But, just cleaning the copper connections on the switch didn't work for me. I actually figured out that I wasn't getting continuity between the lower middle and lower left pins (shown at 3:20 in the video) when it was all assembled. However, there was continuity between each pin and its respective copper strip on the opposite side (I am referencing the long copper strips shown at 3:35 in the video). So I was able to deduce from that, that the raised copper "dots" on the component shown at 4:36 into the video were worn and they weren't making contact with the copper strips shown at 3:35 in the video. So I put some thin plastic strips under that component (the one shown at 4:36) to raise it up higher. That seemed to do the trick and I now have a fully working switch again. Thanks again for a very helpful video.
Nice work, I forget if I showed it in the video, but the original switch had the same worn nub issue that yours did. I'm thinking that's what happens when coins are used to force better contact. I tried to sand down the other a bit to match but it didn't work, so spacers was a better approach.
Once again Thank You. Question? Have you ever replaced a cluster bulb on the instrument panel of an 06? I failed because the High Beam light is burnt out.......I removed the cluster just an hr ago but cant read the bulb number,,any ideas?

great video. we have purchased switches from the junk yard only to have them die months later. on closer examination our switches have the rear assy held together with clips AND by glue. if i figure past the glue i will buff the copper like you did but apply something to the pads to prevent further oxidation
Thanks . My problem after analyzing everything was the plastic was melted under the copper cap , the spring wasn't letting it push up to the copper contact strips.
That's a nice simple design, a slider switch presented as rotary :-D Stop playing with your knob he he :-D Looking at the outside tracks, one end is the off position, so if you shorted the connector it would be on in some way. The good old petrol rag would be my way to remove all that sticky poo grease, it stinks but cuts through the crap lol. Yes that copper plate does look worn, but if that's the original switch then it's lasted a decent time.
Pushing on my switch didn't make it work but I took out the unit to test the switch anyway. Sure enough the switch is dead. I tried cleaning but still not making contact. I jumpered the power plug in and the fan blew, all speeds worked, so I know the switch is the problem.
The slide contact in the switch is spring loaded... at 7:35 on the video is what I'm taking about. Pop out the little square slide part, get a tiny screw driver and work the contact back up. You'll see a spring. Clean it up so it stays popped out.
my blower used to work from the switch but not the darn thing isnt turning on and i would like assistance of how to diagnose if its the climate control is bad or is it a lever under the glove box where the blower fan is located and i heard theres a lever that can get stuck it opens the flapper to allow the heat to turn on?
seems to me just get a new part.. u got brand new....but of course its gonna be a labor charge for the time to replace it... guess im looking at a few hundred dollars.. huh?...part is probably only around 50 or 60 dollars?.... i only have hi speed.... worked all along till friday morning.... find i only have one speed ...hi.. glad for that.. but if it goes out.... in this hot weather...so glad its not dead of winter when this happened.
question this is something you maybe can tell me where the shift is and its right below the ashtray i see a rectangle indent what is in there a switch? can you please let me know what it is cause mines doesnt say anything and is it some other switch like to change economy and sports mode to the transmission?? please let me know mines a 2001 hyundai santa fe front wheel drive 2.7l
me again. there was no glue i just was attacking the wrong side. after examination of metal parts from one i took apart i found the stationary square copper piece was frozen and the spring behind it wasn't able to push to make contact with the moving pads so on another not working complete assy i removed the front center botton and squirted a cleaner lubricant inside. did the same to rear where plug goes to. after soaking a few minutes and turning fan speed knob a bit this formaly dead switch now works.
Does anyone know if you need any special type of screw driver to take everything apart and install the new blower switch, or will a standard size work?
I have the opposite problem. When I turn it off, it will intermittently turn on. Pressing off again, it will sometimes turn right back on, or a few seconds later, it's totally random. Some days there is no problem. I also have an issue where when it is on, and I want it on, the fan speed will vary up and down constantly. Do you think your fix will address my issues too?
Im dealing with this same issue. I have three switches on rotation. After awhile, the one in use always gets build up and stops working. I have not tried dielectric grease after cleaning. I'll give it a go, but is there any explanation as to why this is happening? Is there to much current to the switch? Bad blower motor resistor perhaps?

(mr71chevyvan) other than you remove the center button on the rotary fan speed selector no further disassembly required drench w/a spray cleaner/lube.rotate knob a few times to free frozen parts. let sit facing up for say 10 mins. after that flip assy over to plug side up and drench that too. i resurrected a known bad assy this way and one from the junk yard that had also failed. there have been no further probs since.

Thank you, fixed mine. Had to remove the smal part with contact plate and clean that so it moved as intended. Was a spring there to.
it worked great, the back was hard to get off the switch with those tabs but nothing else was too complicated. Thanks for posting the video.

I replaced this a few months ago and now I'm having the same problem 😩 I'm not sure if I should replace this again or the blower motor

Possibly. Could be that the slider contacts are worn and occasionally toggling speeds that aren't selected.

I'm not entirely sure, never looked into the wiring diagrams to see what it's hooked up to. But maybe a little grease will keep it cleaner
