Yeah but you will end up with a truck load! The sweets have broke the ground today and we having a freeze tonight and tomorrow night. 188 mater plants planted outside. Got to love this gardening game!!
Great video as always Jenna! I love carrots and grow lots of them. will be a great harvest this year...been eating them for weeks now. Thinning is soooo important if you like large carrots for storage!
Grilled carrots... yum! Carrots are also a favorite in my household. I planted twice as many as normal last year and it still wasn't enough. Take care & have a great evening!
I hope you do- homegrown carrots are so darn tasty! I never had good luck with carrots until I started growing them in raised beds. Now I grow them in a mix of sandy topsoil & mushroom compost and they do beautifully. I've got my clay amended to the point where I can grow them in my regular garden soil, but they're never as beautiful as the ones grown in the raised beds. Let me know how it goes if you give them a try. Take care & have a great evening!
@@pgjc756 I'm not a big fan of them for everything, but there are certain crops I have much better luck with. Spinach is another one that does better for me in raised beds. The thing I don't like is they need watered sooooo much more than my in-ground stuff.
Good info, thanks for sharing. I have little room left for carrots this year, maybe I can add them next year. I had to cover everything up last night, it was 33 degrees here in zone 7b this morning and frost everywhere. All the plants did fine under the cover. I have tomatoes and peppers blooming, didn't want them to get damaged. Take care.
Good old Mother Nature, keeping us on our toes! I'm glad all your plants are fine. We woke up to 3 inches of snow on Monday morning and subsequent frosts each morning since; by Tuesday it's supposed to be 81F 😆. Have a great weekend!
Wonderful! I'm going to play with my overwintered timing a little this year. Last year I planted early & mid September and the carrots look like they should be ready to harvest any time now. I may try an earlier planting this year as well. Thanks for sharing & have a great evening!
For me it's: Step 1>Find a large bush near your garden. Step 2> kick the bush gently. Step 3> Note how many bunnies both wild and domestic come running out. Step 4> Decide not to grow carrots..... Also this video needs more Jenna in it. :)
😂 Oh this is funny... and so frustrating. We also raise a large garden at my parent's and this is their plight. Wild rabbits EVERYWHERE. Every seedling must be protected or it WILL be eaten! Regarding the video needing more Jenna- sometimes I get sick of seeing myself and have to take a break 😆, but I appreciate the sentiment. Take care & have a great remainder of the week!
Nothing wrong with baby carrots 😄. You can also always harvest some at baby carrot size and allow the rest to remain- that will give the remaining roots space to size up a little more and you get a successive harvest... win/win!
It will depend a bit on your growing region, but here in Ohio (Zone 6a), I planted seed mid-September. My plants had just an inch or so of top growth on them by the time the weather got really cold. At the end of November I covered them with a heavyweight row cover and left that on all winter. I took it off early March and my carrot should be getting ready to harvest any time now! I hope this helps, but if you have any questions about the process- let me know. Take care!
I bought some cold tolerant carrots seeds for this fall, to try and overwinter them this year, so that I have an early crop next year. Btw, do you know anything about growing salsify?
It's a great way to get a jump start on the harvest! I looked into growing salsify about 10 years ago. At the time I didn't have access to any raised beds and I didn't feel like it would do well in my clay soil. Now that I have some nice deep raised beds I should give it a try. From what I understand, the trickiest part of growing salsify is just having your soil nice and loose to a depth of 8-12". If you do try it, I'd love to hear how it goes! Take care & have a great evening!
@@leahhill4670 Oh cool! It's typically around 120-150 day maturity. Depending on when you planted it last year it might be ready by now! But I don't know any tricks to telling if it's ready without pulling some out of the ground- sorry!
Absolutely! Carrots do really well in containers-- the only problem I have is making sure I keep them well watered, since the containers tend to dry out much faster than in-ground plantings.
Haha- yes, I think you can still find them somewhere. I have to say- I'm pretty impressed with the yellow & white carrots I've grown. Red are OK. Purple are worthless 😆.
Excellent tutorial Jenna.
🥕Happy gardening, Terry King.
Thank you, Terry. Hope you have a great weekend!
Great how to. We harvested our first half dozen carrots of the year today. They were delicious!
Yummy! I'm going to be trying the Terek kohlrabi you suggested a while back - I'm curious if you have a favorite carrot variety?
Awesome information on how to grow carrots Mrs. Jenna. You my friend are a gardening master! Stay safe and have a wonderful rest of the week!
Thank you sir! Now, I'm not going to end up with exhibition sized carrots like you will with those Sweet Candles, but they'll still taste pretty good!

Planted carrot seeds in August and finished last harvest in February, just in time to amend the bed before planting again in March 🥕

Hi Jen 👋👋👋👋 thanks so very much 💕 for the update on carrots I think I e fertilzed to much nitrogen and not enough phosphorus & potassium

Have you ever grown carrots in containers? Would this be a viable option assuming the container is tall enough?
Absolutely! Carrots do really well in containers-- the only problem I have is making sure I keep them well watered, since the containers tend to dry out much faster than in-ground plantings.
