Thanks for doing this follow up and for always being so detailed on your videos. Will be great to see the difference between doing each for spring vs fall planting considering the different conditions, if you decide to do it again.
This was an awesome experiment! Carrots seem to be the one crop that everyone does differently and you actually took the time to test all these different methods! Great work:) I used a double layer of row fabric to cover the soil over my carrot bed this spring and got very fast, consistent germination (within a week). I'm trying it again right now to see if I'll be as lucky mid-summer.
I might try that sand and seed mix and sprinkle them more spread out. I did the presprouting one year but mine all looked like elves with their legs crossed.
Please do it for fall harvest! I planted with the board this spring, but didn't thin we'll. I'd love to see more as I live in Dayton and love your videos
It makes a lot of sense to me that germination would have been slowed under a board or cardboard in the spring. They're great methods for keeping your seeds from drying out when planting in summer for a fall harvest, but in the spring they're contraindicated because the soil is still thawing, and covering it up will slow the thawing process. Thanks for making this video! It was a lot of fun seeing the results of your experiment.
I found your different methods for planting carrots very interesting. I am interested in seeing the results of using these methods in the summer planting. You do an excellent job of describing the procedures for this novice gardener. I am hopeful that I will actually be able to grow carrots this year. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Excellent information. Carrots can be very difficult just to get to germinate. I have experimented myself over the years. One thing will share that seems to really make a difference is soaking your seeds in luke warm water for an hour or two before sewing them. I have also found that if you drain them, spread out on a paper towel and then cover with another paper towel it makes them easier to sew and seperates the seeds out. I have found this method improves germination by at least 60%. The other thing i have learned is there are a million different brands of seed out there but quality makes a difference with carrots the higher quality seeds are more consistent. Most other garden seeds ive not noticed that much difference but it does with carrots. Feel free to share this information with your viewers.
Just saw your video about spacing carrots. I'm terrible at thinning my carrots, and they always grow weird because they are too close together. Last year, I 3d printed tall soil block makers. I planted my carrots inside in soil blocks, and about two weeks after they sprouted, I transplanted them to the garden with the appropriate spacing. Making the soil blocks was time-saving since my carrots didn't need to be thinned. I didn't experience any transplant shock with them.
Excellent video Jenna. I have used the board method for years along with thinning, its worked well for me. I also soak my seed for about 4 hours. Sow and then sift about 1/8 inch of very fine soil covering the seed, water, and then placing a 1x6 centered over each row.The key for carrots is having the perfect soil/compaction and the bed/soil as level as humanly possible. I generally grow my carrotts in 24" x "48" raised beds that are 12" high. The smaller bed makes it easier for me to sow and thin.
Wanted to add that I believe a lot of gardeners mistakenly believe their having germination issues when they are floating their seeds to the edge of their beds when they water early on. I only see germination issues in the heat of mid summer
Omgoodness 😅 one more to add to the list. I’m going to try seeding them in the mini soil blocks and placing them out at first sight of germination. Seeding that way is therapeutic somehow. 😂 Worth a try.
@@GrowfullywithJenna I have three sizes of the Ladbrooke blockers. I’ve used the mini 20 (3/4”) and the 5 (1.5”) the most in the past few years. Now, there are the swift blockers. 😭 Won’t be able to justify those for a while!! 😅 I have had great success with them. This past winter I invested in the Epic pots and trays. The root systems I got from them were top notch! It’s been so much fun getting back into seed starting and trying out different methods.
Wonderfully informative trial. I live in semi-desert where it's common to see dry hot weather with temperatures more than 40C (105F). In mid July, I thoroughly soak my soil before planting carrots, make a shallow furrow, cover the seeds with thin vermiculite, run a sprayer over the furrows then cover with plywood. When the seeds germinate, I remove the plywood then use a timer to spray them for about one minute three times a day: 11:00, 14:00 and 17:00. They also get watered thoroughly for about 15 minutes every second day at 05:00, along with the other veggies in my raised beds. Tender carrot seedlings are difficult to mulch effectively so I will apply mulch lightly between rows and increase the mulch as they mature and after thinning. I too find thinning carrots is tedious, no matter how careful I am with sowing the seeds. I'd love to see you continue these tests and maybe you will find a more efficient way to minimize the amount of thinning required. Love your channel and love your trials. Always credible, creative and informative. Thank you.
I'll stop whining about having to water them every other day now 😆! Definitely much trickier to get them to germinate in your climate.- using a timer is a smart choice!
I’ve never grown carrots before, but always wanted to. After watching your video, I decided to use the board method, I believe it worked very well, I have many carrots, and they’re almost ready to pick. I would love to see that video for the fall carrots. Thank you.
I suspect the idea came from the fact that many other types of small seeds are mixed with sand to make broadcast sowing easier (wild flowers are the main example I can think of).
So interesting Jenna. Thanks for doing such a detailed trial! My spring sown carrots in new hampshire are just coming in, direct seeded between late march and mid April. I love the taste of fresh carrots! Especially in the fall and early winter after a light frost. I plan to to plant those carrots this week.
I don’t know if you will see this but I mix French breakfast radish seeds with the carrot seeds. I usually do the cornstarch slurry but I think it would work with sand or just with seeds themselves. The radishes mature before the carrots get very big. Where the radishes are picked it leaves spaces for the carrots to mature. I also think the quicker germination of the radishes helps break up any hardness on the top of the soil. I think my carrots are sown thinly to begin with using this method but there is usually very minimal thinning needed. I like the French breakfast radishes because of their shape being elongated and also they seem to be a little less attractive to any root maggots in my garden. Maybe this method will help you too.
I was excited to see the results. I watched the 1st video and actually tried the cornstarch method, I have a thick bunch of carrots. I should have thinned more but I want to see my granddaughters eyes when they start pulling them. Next I'm trying the board method. Thank you and yes another video please. 😊
I have some short day carrots I’m getting ready to try using the corn starch method. Thanks for the tips! I just want to experiment and see what happens . 👩🌾
Love watching your tests... especially when the results are so clear. I just sowed some carrot seeds recently... I might have to try your approach for some of the remaining seeds.
Thanks Jenna, sowed carrot seed earlier today zone 5, central Iowa and covered with a single layer of burlap and then covered real lightly with Little Bluestem straw. I think that I will have good results. We shall see. Your carrot sowing trial was interesting. Keep up the great work/fun Jenna!
I also found the cornstarch sowed too thickly. Although maybe too many seeds per qty or thin gel-and saved seeds that were still sticky… take the time to hand sow. I did cover mine with frost cloth as much for moisture and some early spring heat retention as keep the birds out-this worked well!
Some folks pointed out that I should not have cut the hole in my cornstarch gel bag so big… not sure if it will completely remedy my issues with it, but I’m going to try!
Thanks Jenna. Good info. I'm sure I'm not alone in saying that my carrot germination really needs to improve! My spotty success rates are disheartening.
I would love to see a summer carrot planting test. I live in the desert and it's pretty much always hot and dry here. My guess is that the wood board would probably be most successful.
While the results did not show you a clear winner like you had hoped, they were interesting. Yes, please run this test on your fall carrots. I usually just use cardboard and am curious whether I should switch it up next year.
Would love to see a summer version of this. Curious when you'd plant as I am hoping to plant my next set of carrots and am unsure of when to plant in southwest Ohio.
That was a great experiment. I am thinking about thinning my carrots now. They are way too think but UGH I really don't want to. I would love to see this experiment for summer-fall planting. Thanks for all your great videos.
I would be interested in seeing what happens for your summer sowing. I just sowed carrots and it was hot and dry and I made the furrow, sowed the seed, watered them in (didn't cover them with soil, just let the water move some soil over them) and put cardboard over them. They germinated really quickly (a few days). I was surprised and pleased.
Out of all the methods you tested, you didn't try the one that we have found to work best for us in terms of both getting good germination rates, and getting the seeds spaced properly to avoid excessive thinning later. Use pelletized seeds. Ever since we discovered pelletized seeds for carrots, it has been a total game changer. The pellets are bright white, making them easier to see on the soil, they are larger and easier to more accurately place with the preferred spacing as you sow. I highly recommend trying pelletized seeds if you reproduce this test. We cover ours with a board, or burlap, as in your test, and both methods have worked great. Thanks for all the great content!
I always figured putting seed into any kind of mixture wouldn't be helpful. I'm looking forward to thinner paper. I went to Dollar Tree and bought some really thin tp, made seed tape and put it away for safe keeping from my cats. I'm still looking and hopefully will find it😂❤😅
Thank you for showing your test. This is my first year having a garden. Last year was all about compost 😊 I planted carrots and thined them when they were 1 1/2 inch tall. So far so good but I'm late. I think your zone is close to mine. So keep the videos coming 👍
Love this follow up video!!! And very interesting regarding the results!! We are in zone 8a in NC so planting a fall crop of carrots is in my future 😊. Because we have a small family I plan on growing in succession and I’ll carefully sew my rows. Thank you for being a fantastic teacher 😊
Cool experiment. Do your kids enjoy the gardening, I have introduced our 3 and 4 year old grandsons to sowing seeds and transplanting. Good potato harvest, green beans turned out well, I will have to check out a few ears next week, but think the first of sweet corn might be ready, so dry here in SW mo the grasshoppers are starting to damage some of the crop. zone 6b
It has been so hot and dry, I am surprised anything is growing, lol. All of my seed tape failed miserably, just too hot, even with shade cloth. Pre germinating some more carrots, hopefully they can hold on. My early planted carrots are doing fine, the ones (main crop) I planted a couple weeks ago, kaput!!! Enjoy your videos, back to the drawing board. Stay Well!!!
Definitely would like to see this again for the fall. My carrots are a bit behind in their growth. But I also planted later than you, per my growing zone. I also tried growing in a grow bag because I have not had very good luck growing in ground. I would like to try another round in a grow bag for the fall.
I would definitely like to see another test. I plan to plant carrots in my cold frame for winter harvest. Love your videos. Thanks for all your work and knowledge sharing.
Nice! I only do summer planting since the only use for carrots in my house is my wife's birthday carrot cake 😆 I always use the board trick. Works lime a champ in the dry heat!
I would like to see the germination results of doing a similar trial in July or early August. I have a toolway seeder, it spaces carrot seeds well. Large bed, black poly Tarp cover definitely helped my germination rates, a lot. Hopefully next year, I'll have a back yard garden to play with, as well. Hand sowing will be necessary. Then. I'll follow your trial results. Thanks
So interesting! Thank you for following up with the results, I've been excited to see them. Great experiment. You always have the best, clear info. Enjoy your carrots!
Going to sow more, this time will cover seedlings with hardware cloth ( growing in growbag). Crossing my fingers. My 5 yr old grandson REALLY wanted s some home grown carrots
I love all your tests. I grew carrots for the 1st time by winter sowing and they actually grew really well! I used a large white vinegar jug that was probably 1.5 gallons, so I was able to get my soil level higher than a milk jug
Yes, I'd be interested in seeing the difference in methods in a summer planting. Never tackled a fall planting of carrots yet, but I'm going to try this month. Thanks for sharing!
That was fantastic! I have read so many of these different techniques and seen various YT vids on one or another, but never an actual test like this. Very helpful content!
Typically for my summer plantings, I have good results thoroughly saturating the soil after planting and covering with a board! When I don't do this, the seed often does not germinate. I'm really curious to see how these results will change with the summer planting.
I just sowed my fall carrots yesterday and used a combo of burlap on the soil and cardboard on top of the burlap that it supported by the edges of my raised bed. We have been so hot and dry that I need double duty. I'd love to see your results of a fall carrot sowing!
WOW, this is absolutely amazing. This is right up there with your seed starting mix test's. I'm in DE zone 7, this year I started carrots using cardboard to keep them moist and I had great germination. Thank you for sharing.
We love your dedication and the stylish carrot crunching with which you end your vid! Next time are you maybe going to mix sand and seed and cornstarch? All three together!
Yes, please, try this for fall planting! I just tried the board method and underestimated how often I would need to water here in dry CA. I can see having more success with mini-greenhouses but would prefer a method without any additional purchases. Thanks, Jenna!
Please do a summer carrot germination test. It’s hard germinating carrots in summer even here in the cooler Pacific Northwest. Thank you so much for these tests, super interesting to see your results!
I didn’t like homemade seed tape as I think the seeds struggled to either break through or it was a reaction to flour glue. I used single ply TP. I prefer to lightly seed and use burlap. I used 1 layer of burlap, but don’t let them grow through it or they will pull up. I’ve also used a piece of vinyl siding with success but can slide around. Great tests.
I've been looking forward to these results! I definitely thought the sand or slurry one were going to he the best! 😮 I'd love to see you do this again in the fall, & maybe even again next spring, using a smaller ration of seeds to sand, thinner toilet paper, etc.
I hate thinning carrots too, but I reckon it’s one of those jobs where you just have to bite the bullet and get it done. Sowing heavy seems to help get a good stand of carrots. I make one big sowing of carrots and then harvest all at once and can a years worth of carrots. Here in southern Ontario, I wait to sow until June 1st and harvest on the Labour Day weekend, that’s the part of the season when the carrot rust fly is least active so I don’t have to do anything else to control the little beasties!
Thanks for doing this follow up and for always being so detailed on your videos. Will be great to see the difference between doing each for spring vs fall planting considering the different conditions, if you decide to do it again.

Enjoy your videos, back to the drawing board. Stay Well!!!
I’m glad your early planting is doing well at least! It’s so hard to get a good start with carrots with hot & dry weather! Good luck!
Definitely would like to see this again for the fall. My carrots are a bit behind in their growth. But I also planted later than you, per my growing zone. I also tried growing in a grow bag because I have not had very good luck growing in ground. I would like to try another round in a grow bag for the fall.
Grow bags are a great option if your soil isn’t ideal for carrots!
I'm very interested in seeing your summer carrot planting. Thanks for doing all the comparisons.
I think I’ve got to do the fall test- I need to know what happens!! 😄
Thank you for doing this and sharing. Yes, please do a summer planting test!
Happy to share!
Interesting! Thank you for the follow up. Yes, I’d like to see how your fall carrots do.
You're welcome!
I would definitely like to see another test. I plan to plant carrots in my cold frame for winter harvest.
Love your videos. Thanks for all your work and knowledge sharing.
I'm definitely doing the summer test! I'm too curious not to test it out!
Incredible results Jenna 👍👏👏👏💪🏻
Thanks!
Nice!
I only do summer planting since the only use for carrots in my house is my wife's birthday carrot cake 😆
I always use the board trick. Works lime a champ in the dry heat!
Now I want carrot cake too 😄
Thank you for doing this follow-up video. I would like to see your fall planting of carrots. I tend to have better luck with that.
You're welcome! Hoping to do that test!
single ply (separate double ply) or dollar store tp. i use a tiny dollop of good ole elmers glue. works for me.
Thank you! Cheers!
Going to sow more, this time will cover seedlings with hardware cloth ( growing in growbag). Crossing my fingers. My 5 yr old grandson REALLY wanted s some home grown carrots
Best of luck!
@GrowfullywithJenna 3 days/ nights have passed since I "caged" the 🥕. NO more digging!
I love all your tests. I grew carrots for the 1st time by winter sowing and they actually grew really well! I used a large white vinegar jug that was probably 1.5 gallons, so I was able to get my soil level higher than a milk jug
How fun. Did you let them grow in the jug until harvest? Or did you transplant them?
@@Talula72 they stayed inside the jug until harvest
Nice idea!
Great video. I’d love to see pre-germinated in cornstarch mix. It’s on my list to try next summer.
I've been seriously considering this!
Thank you, I just watched What to plant in July Zone 6. Amazing skin also, eating things that are alive makes a difference I can tell.
Thank you!
Yes, I'd be interested in seeing the difference in methods in a summer planting. Never tackled a fall planting of carrots yet, but I'm going to try this month. Thanks for sharing!
I think I’ve got to do the fall test- I need to know what happens!! 😄
I would love to see the test on the fall carrots! Super interesting thank you
I'm definitely doing the summer test! I'm too curious not to test it out!
That was fantastic! I have read so many of these different techniques and seen various YT vids on one or another, but never an actual test like this. Very helpful content!
I’m glad you liked it!
You read my mind ! I was just thinking about this bc its almost time to plant the fall carrots. Thank you so much this is going to be a game changer !
Typically for my summer plantings, I have good results thoroughly saturating the soil after planting and covering with a board! When I don't do this, the seed often does not germinate. I'm really curious to see how these results will change with the summer planting.
I love all of the experiments you do. Keep 'em coming!
Thanks, will do!
I found a salt shaker works pretty well. Then cover with a board
Thanks for the tip!
Thanks for the video Jenna
You're welcome!
Yes! Would love to see your Summer planting for the Fall. I haven’t had much luck with growing carrots… I’m in a zone 6b. 🥕🥕🥕
I'm definitely doing the summer test! I'm too curious not to test it out!
I just sowed my fall carrots yesterday and used a combo of burlap on the soil and cardboard on top of the burlap that it supported by the edges of my raised bed. We have been so hot and dry that I need double duty. I'd love to see your results of a fall carrot sowing!
Smart idea!
WOW, this is absolutely amazing. This is right up there with your seed starting mix test's. I'm in DE zone 7, this year I started carrots using cardboard to keep them moist and I had great germination. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you!
We love your dedication and the stylish carrot crunching with which you end your vid!
Next time are you maybe going to mix sand and seed and cornstarch? All three together!
Oh- that could be an interesting test!
I love garden experiments!
Yay! Me too!
Nice work Jenna as always very informative. Would like to see a summer planting to compare methods with the heat challenge
Yes, please, try this for fall planting! I just tried the board method and underestimated how often I would need to water here in dry CA. I can see having more success with mini-greenhouses but would prefer a method without any additional purchases. Thanks, Jenna!
I'm definitely doing the summer test! I'm too curious not to test it out!
Excellent test! Starting to plan out our fall carrots. Might try 2-3 of these variations to compare our own results. Thanks, as always, Jenna!
I'd love to hear how it goes for you!
Please do a summer carrot germination test. It’s hard germinating carrots in summer even here in the cooler Pacific Northwest. Thank you so much for these tests, super interesting to see your results!
I think I'm going to! I'm too curious to see the results not to do a summer test!
Thanks for sharing!
I've been looking forward to these results! I definitely thought the sand or slurry one were going to he the best! 😮 I'd love to see you do this again in the fall, & maybe even again next spring, using a smaller ration of seeds to sand, thinner toilet paper, etc.
The more tests I do, the more I think of to try out 😁
I had similar results with the corn starch slurry. I would be very interested in a mid summer trial.
I think I’ve got to do the summer test- I need to know what happens!! 😄
I love love love these experiment videos
I'm so glad!
