@Fextralife General sentiments I've seen is that the art direction will be the most subjective aspect of the game (and a potential detractor). If you wanted a more CRPG approach, then you already know it's not what you're getting here. Otherwise, everything else is either cautiously optimistic to mainly positive.
My biggest worry is still the simplistic nature of their game’s design. Smash green jars to get a health potion. No looting from enemies. Not direct control of companions. Each party member being confined to just 3 abilities in battle. I sincerely hope it’s good, but it all looks like they shaved off all the complexity to cater to a wider audience.
Exactly my biggest issues too, the fact theres big skill trees yet only 3 in battle is utter bollocks. They should have listened to actual fans and gone back to Origin style (which is still the best DA by far)
IDK, looting in DAI was like one of the worst parts of the game im ok with a simplistic game if it is fun and has a good story. Bioware hasn't been good at deep complex RPGs for a long long time. IMO their best game is Mass Effect 2, which is a very simple game mechanics wise, but had amazing writing and cinematic storytelling
My main interest with this game is the story and writing continuing from Inquisition. Good gameplay is always great, but if there's no other reason to play other than the gameplay feels good, that's quite disappointing for something that's been this long in the making and has so much story weight attached to it.

Can you save your character appearance or share them with a code? I don't want to spend 2 hours on the character creation again just to try out different class.
I feel like people are going to get a better experience with this game if they try to seperate it from previous Dragon Age games. I also think it's time these damn companies start making new IP's instead of just completely changing their current ones to fit whatever they believe is gonna sell better. Edit: The fact that people are getting so mad about this just proves my point. This should have been a completely other IP, but it isn't.

But why should people have to separate it from the previous games that's the point of sequels. They are supposed to be improvements over the original and carry on the story. Space Marine 2 being a great example of this done very well. I have no intention of wasting my time or money on this pathetic Dragon Age in name only game... This game is to Dragon Age what Rings of Power is to Lord of the Rings, little more than a skin suit worn by people who have little to no talent, using the name of a loved franchise to sell their game and their story, which would have no audience without the name on the box. I can see this flopping hard. The fact Bioware were so desperate to get some positive coverage by asking youtubers to come out and see it shows they know just how badly this game has been received by the Dragon Age fanbase.
I didn’t really care for Inquisition simply because I felt it strayed waaay too far from Origins. Now that I know Dragon Age isn’t what it used to be, and Baldur’s Gate 3 fills that CRPG itch for the next decade I’m actually excited to play this game for some hack-n-trash RPG action.

I don't get why are people harping on about the artstyle DA never had a consistent artstyle DAO was bleak with brown everywhere DA2 the elves looked like rats and everything was basically the same 3 to 4 base models and DAI was only good if you played it on ps4 Xbox one the artstyle on ps3 and the 360 sucked my point is is that it's different in every game so get over it
Well, It's looking good... so far... Combat looks nice, Exploration looks intriguing, Customization looks decent (well, decent enough from what we see here). Again... The only big concern left is the "Story" which really is a biggest factor for me. So far I'm been hearing only bad things about it from so many sources I considered reliable, So that's quite disheartening. I hope that's just a false alarm or at the very least for it to turn out not as bad as it were thought to be. I really do hope that's the case...

This is a good video and a very fair initial assessment. Im really looking forward to it and i like how the environments look. My only concern coming from someone who absolutely loved BG3 is the combat, but Im trying to keep an open mind since I ended up loving cyberpunk 2077 even though nornally i dont like those types of games.
Great video and helped answer some lingering questions I had. I really hope that come release you'll begin your theory crafting journey and releasing build guides etc. I hope you do as much for The Veilguard as you do for Elden Ring.
Good review FL. It is hard not to hate the direction they are taking with the art style and dialogue options but it is good to hear some good things about the game. Probably will pick it up when there is a sale for it since there is no way I am fully supporting this cartoony style where everything is glowing and every character is overstylized
I think I would be concerned if the combat was better than the story - it’s a big departure from the previous games. Similar to other people, I won’t be preordering but I’m willing to give it a chance and see if I enjoy it :) If we are going down to 3 characters per mission, including the main character then the systems need to be great not just solid and there needs to be some good development. Above all, there needs to be some genuinely surprising things for immersion and I just can’t tell if there is much on offer here.
I've played them all, and I'm looking forward to this one too, but I really hope the Qunari I'm inevitably going to play doesn't end up being forced to look like Herman Munster. Hopefully a Qunari mod will be released quickly to make them look better!
I like that Rook’s costume design changes based on what faction he/she chooses. And this game does have the traditional tribal tattoo option in character creation which I love in RPGs. As for the gameplay, it kind reminds me of God of War Ragnarok in terms of weapon swapping, level design and combat and a mixture of Tales of Arise and Final Fantasy 16 in terms of exploration.
I was always interested in the Dragon Age games, but each time one came out there was something in life that stopped me from playing it for whatever reason(too busy, didn't have a good enough system, money, etc etc) and for some reason I never got around to going back to try them. I'm very interested in Veilguard and everything I learn cautiously lifts my optimism, I'm still a cynic but a hopeful one as it stands. Very keen to see more and experience this!
I won't day one it, but if the reviews are decent like say 7 and above, I'll def get it. I like what I see mostly despite so many people are shitting on the game.
What I like about cinematic style combat is it gets even better with higher difficulty. A good difficulty level would be just getting touched by a weak enemy should cost you 20-30% health.
Dragon Age went from A Song of Ice and Fire to Rings of Power. No lies, I played Origins on Xbox no less than 20x over the years. That's how much I loved the world of Thedas. With subsequent entries, the game became less of what it started out as, and now I barely recognize it. I'll probably play it in a year or so when it comes to EA play or when its 75% off. No way Im paying full price. Im praying Bioware doesn't F up Mass Effect 4.
That's on Unreal Engine so Mass Effect 4 should be safe...although if this game fails, I don't think Bioware will last, even if Mass Effect 4 ends up good, they need both games to be a success.
@@KB-ql8cx Frostbite engine is not the best to work with for a game like Dragon Age so yeah, engine is a big part as well. If they kept the frostbite engine, they'd be limited to another Andromeda.
I´m looking forward to this! I loved Dragon Age origins and i will love this one too. I´m not afraid or worried that its gonna be different. Of course it is. Im embracing this change. I love everything i see and its got me hyped up!
Honestly not sure what I’ll choose I’m usually a spell sword type of guy but not sure if it would be better to use a spell blade or a warrior with spell abilities we will see
the main thing that i like is the return to a mission based world. mass effect 2 and 3 had the perfect design for these story and character focused bioware games. Inquisition would have been a great game if there was no open world and more handcrafted story missions

I’m more excited after watching your video. I was not thrilled about a new dragon age. BioWare did build a lot of story for the game world, so it’s probably good that they didn’t start a new IPO.
I haven’t really been able to get in to Dragon Age in the past despite being interested, but I think this game looks really interesting. The art style doesn’t bother me as much as other people, although I do understand people not being in to it. The combat and general gameplay looks much more appealing for someone like me though, I’m looking forward to seeing what people think on release
I swear to fuck, if one more “reviewer” compares this title to god damn Baldur’s Gate 3 🙄 Look, BG3 is a phenomenal game and I don’t think anyone is going to question that. But, and this should be obvious, not every RPG can and should be BG3, and Veilguard sure as shit isn’t and isn’t trying to be (as if the lack of dice rolls for every god damn thing didn’t make it obvious). If you want another Baldur’s Gate 3 then wait for whatever game Larian does next. But stop expecting BioWare to copy and paste another RPG just because it was successful. I loved the irony of Fex saying, “I’m worried about BioWare making the game too much like some other games…” then proceeding down the line to exclaim, “I wish A and B was more like Baldur’s Gate 3.” It’s no wonder the PR people and Devs didn’t answer much because I’m sure they’re sick to death of people asking, “Will you have this or that like Baldur’s Gate?” I understand being worried about any new release in a series, but if you’re going into an RPG saying to yourself “if this isn’t a Larian game I’m gonna hate this…” that is so god damn myopic that you have almost no chance of appreciating the game for it own merits. (Sigh) Ok, got that out so I can just move on 👍🏼
I hate the art style, I hate the neon pink and greens, I hate that I can smell the Solas stuff will be sidelined, I don't like the look of the party members or how try-hard cool they are, I don't like the UI/HUD, battle system looks weak, party members seem pointless, the list goes on... I'll pass. Dragon Age Inq was disapointment enough.
Great video! I’m a huge fan of fantasy games, D&D, and Mass Effect. I know it’s a bit of a shame that for whatever reason, I’ve never gotten super into Dragon Age! I got pretty far into Origins back in high school. I had some fun with Inquisition as well but sort of lost interest (or maybe just got overwhelmed) with the open world and abundant side content. I know they are in a bit of a tough space with trying to appeal to both newcomers and long-time fans, but it looks like they are striking a good balance. I’ve never been a huge fan of the dialogue wheels/options featured in some of these games, but I have to say that the world and the combat look like a lot of fun! Those mage animations are sick.
I am heavily invested in the story of this series. I want this game to do well and have been equally worried about it. However, this is going to be a game to get on sale on PC.
Fortnite has done insane damage to games and their art style. Why is everything trying to ape and appeal to these 'cool modern audiences' that dont exists
Not a fan of the fact that every class seems to be able to use magic, a big part of the series is that aside from a few exceptions only Mages can use magic.
I really love dragon age inquisition. I think that game was freaking awesome and I’ve been waiting for this for so long. I hope it turns out better than it looks. I’m not a huge fan of the heart, but whatever.
Thank you for being honest about what didn’t vibe with you and what did. I’ll be getting this game regardless since DA is one of my top favorite franchises.
hopefully there will be a lot of loot variety that are viable for endgame instead of like inquisition where you just crafted the highest level set and it looked exactly the same on every class and model
So, this game is more Mass Effect-y in the action and gameplay aspect than Dragon Age-y... I am not happy about it, but I can live with that. Guess I'll buy it.
When you say recreate our warden or inquistor, do you just mean you could make them again, or does the character creator specifcally ask if you want to recreate protagonists from older games?
Looking at this gameplay I'm shocked at how negative fans are being towards this. I like Origins but that art style looks WAY more cartoony than this does, this looks more like The Witcher or something which is cool with me. Fans of certain things just confuse me sometimes, but at least it seems like regardless of the backlash the game itself will be good anyway.
I hate that I wish this was open world. I’m in this weird conundrum where I realize 90% of open world games are trash, but the 10% that are amazing make me disappointed to hear when a game is linear
Gonna be a pass for me. The look of it is pretty meh for my taste, DA 1 had that great dark tone to it, I do not get a bit of that from the previews this far. “More casual, more accessible” is always just garbage in my book. An analogy, we don’t want shitty n shallow 30min shows, we want 2hr long in depth podcasts. I’m an OG rpg guy, BG, icewind dale, fallout 1+2, etc and these low skill games aren’t challenging nor fun because of it. It’s kinda current events allegory and exposition just shoved into what was a popular series, how they made the last one more actiony and less role play. I mean as a nerd growing up, all I see now is a dumbing down of all the IPs I grew up with, shallow corporate money grabs.
All right you have given me some home with the title art style aside we know how everyone feels about that the fact that the other half of the game which is combat and customization is good got me hopeful. My question is tho were there any characters you liked from the companions available?
It feels like haters are going out of their way on this one. Just do what adults do and move on. Don’t need to keep wasting energy bashing what you’re not going to play.
What I loved about inquisition was the amazing locals and open world(s). Between the horribe ui and the lack of the aformentioned I dont think I'll be playing this. Sadly. this was one of my most anticipated game for years. Im very much let down but I'm sure some will enjoy. Also the characters in this game are kind of ridiculous looking.
I am cautiously optimistic. I like the look of the combat. Story is important for sure. But if game play isn't up to snuff that can sometimes be worse than a kind of "generic story/dialogue". The previous DA games I enjoyed DA2 the most, because it felt like the combat was better. I definitely like that you're not constantly "rooted" in combat. Forced to stand still as a mage or Bow Rogue slowly charging a spell or drawing a bow etc. Now you can move, dodge and be more active. I prefer action-RPG. The environments are important as well. To see varied areas and cool locations. I do like that it's not open world because I have come to learn I don't really like them as much as I thought. Because I get too distracted and end up in a grind to see every corner or having FOMO about it. With a directed path and slightly open areas to explore you are never completely off-rails wandering around a map and forgetting to do main quests etc. Because once a main quest is done for me, so is the game. I don't feel any point in finishing side stuff after the story is done. A little bit worried about the potential Progressive agenda stuff. But if that can be sort of avoided then at least there is that.
Already Pre Ordered, already know the Race, Faction and Class I will play on my first run, and after watching a half dozen previews like yours I am going to hide from Social Media to avoid any spoilers either deliberate or accidental. Thanks for your input and I look forward to the countless Builds you will come up with over the next few months.

Those were all things that were in mass effect 2 and 3 which are largely considered great games. I think it will be fine.
The game is going to force you to pause a lot and be tactical. That feeling is still there and that’s very much dragon age

As someone who has not played the other DA games and could care less about the story, this looks great!

Dragon Age Inquisition is one of my fav games of all time. I don't have much confidence in Veilguard but after seeing this I'll keep an open mind.
I'll play this only because I played the previous three games. Had this game not had Dragon Age in its title I probably wouldn't buy it.
I just want a origins remake or remaster. I'll pay full price
A remake would be awesome and I think would sell well. Remasters IMO often aren't worth it.

Above all, there needs to be some genuinely surprising things for immersion and I just can’t tell if there is much on offer here.
I've played them all, and I'm looking forward to this one too, but I really hope the Qunari I'm inevitably going to play doesn't end up being forced to look like Herman Munster. Hopefully a Qunari mod will be released quickly to make them look better!

I like that Rook’s costume design changes based on what faction he/she chooses. And this game does have the traditional tribal tattoo option in character creation which I love in RPGs.
As for the gameplay, it kind reminds me of God of War Ragnarok in terms of weapon swapping, level design and combat and a mixture of Tales of Arise and Final Fantasy 16 in terms of exploration.
I was always interested in the Dragon Age games, but each time one came out there was something in life that stopped me from playing it for whatever reason(too busy, didn't have a good enough system, money, etc etc) and for some reason I never got around to going back to try them. I'm very interested in Veilguard and everything I learn cautiously lifts my optimism, I'm still a cynic but a hopeful one as it stands. Very keen to see more and experience this!
I won't day one it, but if the reviews are decent like say 7 and above, I'll def get it.
I like what I see mostly despite so many people are shitting on the game.
What I like about cinematic style combat is it gets even better with higher difficulty. A good difficulty level would be just getting touched by a weak enemy should cost you 20-30% health.
Dragon Age went from A Song of Ice and Fire to Rings of Power. No lies, I played Origins on Xbox no less than 20x over the years. That's how much I loved the world of Thedas. With subsequent entries, the game became less of what it started out as, and now I barely recognize it. I'll probably play it in a year or so when it comes to EA play or when its 75% off. No way Im paying full price. Im praying Bioware doesn't F up Mass Effect 4.
That's on Unreal Engine so Mass Effect 4 should be safe...although if this game fails, I don't think Bioware will last, even if Mass Effect 4 ends up good, they need both games to be a success.

@@KB-ql8cx Frostbite engine is not the best to work with for a game like Dragon Age so yeah, engine is a big part as well. If they kept the frostbite engine, they'd be limited to another Andromeda.

Honestly not sure what I’ll choose I’m usually a spell sword type of guy but not sure if it would be better to use a spell blade or a warrior with spell abilities we will see
I hope there are two handed swords and axes. The only warrior gameplay I've seen were these flimsy ass looking hammers.
the first dragon age was so good bioware should take a look back at their greatest hits kotor, dragon age and mass effect

the main thing that i like is the return to a mission based world. mass effect 2 and 3 had the perfect design for these story and character focused bioware games. Inquisition would have been a great game if there was no open world and more handcrafted story missions

Origins were so great that it shadowed lot of games even now. I doubt Veilguard can beat that, but it does look promising and enjoyable

I’m more excited after watching your video. I was not thrilled about a new dragon age. BioWare did build a lot of story for the game world, so it’s probably good that they didn’t start a new IPO.
The Fisher Price art style and pink background is a deal breaker for me!

I haven’t really been able to get in to Dragon Age in the past despite being interested, but I think this game looks really interesting. The art style doesn’t bother me as much as other people, although I do understand people not being in to it. The combat and general gameplay looks much more appealing for someone like me though, I’m looking forward to seeing what people think on release

I swear to fuck, if one more “reviewer” compares this title to god damn Baldur’s Gate 3 🙄 Look, BG3 is a phenomenal game and I don’t think anyone is going to question that.
But, and this should be obvious, not every RPG can and should be BG3, and Veilguard sure as shit isn’t and isn’t trying to be (as if the lack of dice rolls for every god damn thing didn’t make it obvious).
If you want another Baldur’s Gate 3 then wait for whatever game Larian does next. But stop expecting BioWare to copy and paste another RPG just because it was successful. I loved the irony of Fex saying, “I’m worried about BioWare making the game too much like some other games…” then proceeding down the line to exclaim, “I wish A and B was more like Baldur’s Gate 3.”
It’s no wonder the PR people and Devs didn’t answer much because I’m sure they’re sick to death of people asking, “Will you have this or that like Baldur’s Gate?”
I understand being worried about any new release in a series, but if you’re going into an RPG saying to yourself “if this isn’t a Larian game I’m gonna hate this…” that is so god damn myopic that you have almost no chance of appreciating the game for it own merits. (Sigh) Ok, got that out so I can just move on 👍🏼

I hate the art style, I hate the neon pink and greens, I hate that I can smell the Solas stuff will be sidelined, I don't like the look of the party members or how try-hard cool they are, I don't like the UI/HUD, battle system looks weak, party members seem pointless, the list goes on... I'll pass. Dragon Age Inq was disapointment enough.

Great video! I’m a huge fan of fantasy games, D&D, and Mass Effect. I know it’s a bit of a shame that for whatever reason, I’ve never gotten super into Dragon Age! I got pretty far into Origins back in high school. I had some fun with Inquisition as well but sort of lost interest (or maybe just got overwhelmed) with the open world and abundant side content. I know they are in a bit of a tough space with trying to appeal to both newcomers and long-time fans, but it looks like they are striking a good balance. I’ve never been a huge fan of the dialogue wheels/options featured in some of these games, but I have to say that the world and the combat look like a lot of fun! Those mage animations are sick.
I am heavily invested in the story of this series. I want this game to do well and have been equally worried about it. However, this is going to be a game to get on sale on PC.
Fortnite has done insane damage to games and their art style. Why is everything trying to ape and appeal to these 'cool modern audiences' that dont exists
Not a fan of the fact that every class seems to be able to use magic, a big part of the series is that aside from a few exceptions only Mages can use magic.

I really love dragon age inquisition. I think that game was freaking awesome and I’ve been waiting for this for so long. I hope it turns out better than it looks. I’m not a huge fan of the heart, but whatever.

hopefully there will be a lot of loot variety that are viable for endgame instead of like inquisition where you just crafted the highest level set and it looked exactly the same on every class and model

Looking at this gameplay I'm shocked at how negative fans are being towards this. I like Origins but that art style looks WAY more cartoony than this does, this looks more like The Witcher or something which is cool with me.
Fans of certain things just confuse me sometimes, but at least it seems like regardless of the backlash the game itself will be good anyway.
I hate that I wish this was open world. I’m in this weird conundrum where I realize 90% of open world games are trash, but the 10% that are amazing make me disappointed to hear when a game is linear

Gonna be a pass for me. The look of it is pretty meh for my taste, DA 1 had that great dark tone to it, I do not get a bit of that from the previews this far. “More casual, more accessible” is always just garbage in my book. An analogy, we don’t want shitty n shallow 30min shows, we want 2hr long in depth podcasts. I’m an OG rpg guy, BG, icewind dale, fallout 1+2, etc and these low skill games aren’t challenging nor fun because of it. It’s kinda current events allegory and exposition just shoved into what was a popular series, how they made the last one more actiony and less role play. I mean as a nerd growing up, all I see now is a dumbing down of all the IPs I grew up with, shallow corporate money grabs.

What I loved about inquisition was the amazing locals and open world(s). Between the horribe ui and the lack of the aformentioned I dont think I'll be playing this. Sadly. this was one of my most anticipated game for years. Im very much let down but I'm sure some will enjoy. Also the characters in this game are kind of ridiculous looking.
I am cautiously optimistic. I like the look of the combat. Story is important for sure. But if game play isn't up to snuff that can sometimes be worse than a kind of "generic story/dialogue".
The previous DA games I enjoyed DA2 the most, because it felt like the combat was better. I definitely like that you're not constantly "rooted" in combat. Forced to stand still as a mage or Bow Rogue slowly charging a spell or drawing a bow etc. Now you can move, dodge and be more active. I prefer action-RPG.
The environments are important as well. To see varied areas and cool locations. I do like that it's not open world because I have come to learn I don't really like them as much as I thought. Because I get too distracted and end up in a grind to see every corner or having FOMO about it. With a directed path and slightly open areas to explore you are never completely off-rails wandering around a map and forgetting to do main quests etc. Because once a main quest is done for me, so is the game. I don't feel any point in finishing side stuff after the story is done.
A little bit worried about the potential Progressive agenda stuff. But if that can be sort of avoided then at least there is that.
Hope we get cool armor sets that one on the video intro is so cool
