- Опубліковано 30 лип 2024
- Just under the wire before the Chinese New Year, PenBBS has released the 2023 Year of the Rabbit Fountain Pen. I unbox it, talk about the parts and features of the pen, provide some size comparisons and measurements, and then do a writing sample. After the writing sample, I talk about what I like and what I don't like about the pen. Please feel free to use the chapters provided below to skip to various parts of the review.

Love Sgt. Schultz, Hogan's Heroes and all the actors from that show who did a fantastic job. 😃😃😃
LOL John Banner was great.
The pattern on the metal barrel is from the metal which has a crystalline structure. Usually this can be brought out with an acid etch. There are fine circular lines from the machining. I have the silver color barrel.
Awesome! Thanks, Chris. I KNEW you'd know the answer!
The barrel pattern reminds me of frost on a window! Gorgeous pen (& since I was born in a year of the rabbit, I'm going to have to get one once they are back from their Chinese New Year time off!)
It does!
I’ve never considered joining a UA-cam channel before now - I absolutely love the vibe of your channel, and I adore that your content is resonating with so many people.
You’ve graduated far beyond inexpensive pens - I’m going to be going through what I’ve missed all day. I hope you’re well, Doug!
Thank you @TheMagicalSock. That is much appreciated!
Thank you for the information. I was growing despondent over the potential loss of PENBBS as a pen company. They remain my favorites. If I may ask a question. I ordered and received an ivory colored Wing Sung 628 that presented a quite scratchy #5 fine nib. Reviewing your previous tutorials concerning surgery on a scratching nib, my attempts were not successful. Where can a fellow order #5 nibs? They seem to be overwhelmed by #6 nibs by a wide margin. As always, I will appreciate any help you can offer, and continue to enjoy your videos.
It is easier to just replace those awful nibs with a new one.

This pen misses me by a mile, yikes lol. Eye of the beholder and all that...good review Doug!
Thank you, @shane6242!
This is why I like this channel. I come here for all the secret insider advance PenBBS information. There is no better source!
Oh... Oh, I understand... Well, never mind. I'll see myself out now.
LOL
Thank 😂

They’re big aren’t they? I did get a YOX( year of the Ox). Your theory about the composition of the company explains why their short production runs disappear so quickly.
Excellent sleuthing Holmes.
Thank you, Sir!
I have the year of the Tiger and LOVE the look, and more importantly the light weight and the smooth nib.
Thanks for the vid, the design... ok not my preferred but that nib is awesome (juicy)
Fair enough!
Great review Doug. And great discussion on Penbbs. Your history lessons are always welcome. Thanks.KB
Glad you enjoyed it
I got a 308 in Purple Cloud for my gift pen with my POY order.
Nice one!
Though I am generally a minimalist, this guy appeals to my inner wacky Sinophile. And I'm particularly glad to see some Chinese styling. Go, PenBBS! Too bad I won't pay for it.
Thank you, @ichirofakename!
I hope you’re right about the piston filler 323! But if they stick with a metal body, it really could use an ink window 🤞🙏🤞
The 495 is my favorite model
I am shocked, I tell ya. SHOCKED that you don't have a 2019 YOT Pig pen. Beini needs to send you one right away!
(It was a white 471 with a special nib and an extra bit of text on the barrel. No biggy, just a piggy)
That predates my Penbbs fetish.
It is a very interesting pen. The price is a bit high but given it is a limited edition it does explain the cost and that other than the piston filler mechanism, all the other parts are unique to this pen.
As far as usability it is nice to hear that the piston can be removed with the Asvine tool which I have found to be very handy.
I still may go for the Year of the Ox. I have the updated 355 and I have not had a problem with the mechanism.
Great insight to the company, Doug.
Thank you so much, @paulmchugh1430!
I seem to be alone in admiring the overall look of this pen. Cap off, it’s a treat. Cap on, it has a sceptre-like quality that I find unusual and intriguing. Well done, PenBBS!
Thanks, J!
I do admit that with the cap off and far away, it looks nice and comfortable enough. Compared to so many other PenBBS offerings,
the "Year of" pens just seem weird in one way or another.
I received a 309 also
Beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder, but this pen doesn't tick any boxes, for me. Mabe you should; in future; use the noisemaker to indicate your approval; or dislike; of a pen. I think it's hysterical.
I think I'll put the noisemaker on hold until 2025! LOL
I wonder what the blue pattern on the barrel symbolises. Clouds ?
Sounds likely!
I've seen that powder blue associated with rabbits in the past, the special edition Sailor Profit Jr 1911 comes to mind in the fountain pen arena... Then that pattern makes me also think of ice or snow, which is sometimes also associated with the color. Especially with the variants being blue vs silver. Perhaps there's an association there between the concepts!
The sudden interruption in new releases, and even commemorative models arriving a year late, leads me to believe that there may be internal quarrels or difficulties with suppliers. This kind of delay is akin to the time it takes in a court of justice to compel someone, such as a supplier, to fulfill their contractual obligations. It is not uncommon for arguments to break out between those who believe that their personal contribution to a success is the only one that made it possible. Established competitors also tend to put the brakes on newcomers by using their weight with suppliers. And it's not unheard to have tax or cash flow issues when people run a business for the first time on their own without the help of professionals like an accountant.
So many plausible explanations ! The longer PenBBS remains silent, the more wild the speculations.
Excellent points, @thorhilda!
The barrel almost looks galvanised!
It does doesn't it?
While I like this pen without a cap, I don't think this style works for me.
Greetings from Australia.
With the cap off, it looks good. BUT what an ugly cap!! It just doesn't look right it is far too short and does not cover the elongated section.
Would I buy it?
Like Lamy, it is ugly.
In the past three years they shifted their focus to gold nib customization. It was more commercial, also more profitable. I think they went too far with hunger marketing. Most of their models were always out of stock even in mainland China. I have to remove this Brand out my list now. As a member of their forum I still sincerely hope Long37 can copy the Sheaffer Snorkel someday. Good luck to his career.
I just got a note from Beini this morning saying they are working on a new filling system!
If they were handing out awards for horrible pen designs, this one would be a strong contender. Is it a pen? Is it a vape pipe? Wtf indeed!
Ugh...I do not have one good thing to say regarding the style of Penbbs pens anymore.
They definitely have a corner of the market all their own.
I've moved on.
