Tu-4 Stalin's Superfortress

Tupolev Tu-4 is a completely independent metric copy of the Boeing B-29 bomber. Despite the fact that Tupolev had been developing a similar project "64" (Tu-80) since 1945, Stalin, realizing the need to modernize the aviation industry in the destroyed post-war Soviet Union, insisted on copying B-29.
First flight: 19 May 1947
Officially in service since 1949 (ending from the beginning of the 60s)

The fact that any color filim exists of TU-4 operations is rather incredible. The TU-4 was made in metric rather than imperial units. This resulted in a plane with a slightly heavier empty weight but the two were pretty close in terms of performance. I've read the USSR had trouble making good tires for the TU-4. The tires had to carry 60+ tons at take-off, survive the low external pressures and temperatures of high altitude, and then take the forces of landing. Multiple times. The USSR made quite an effort to seek out B-29 tires around the world, mostly in the various places used as B-29 Bases during WWII. By sometime 1948-50 their Rubber industry caught up and they could make good aircraft tires from then on. The TU-4 Bull endeavor was a very beneficial learning experience for Soviet industry

It has four 58liter Ash-72, instead of the B-29 four 54 liter 18 cyl engines. It must had slightly deeper roar, but just imagine that enormous formation of those endless amount of Tu-4s!
