  • So much of what we use is mass produced in factories by machines, but there are still people crafting things by hand. In this reel, we profile a variety of skilled artisans including a craftsman who builds automatons, a family that creates inventive custom coffins and two men who have been making the wooden carousels we all love to ride for over 30 years.

pretty common for horologists to do that, many older watches does not have any spare parts to buy. We are learning to make watch parts with a tolerance of 0.05mm(~1/32 inches) in school.

They probably had a workshop with a big window, wake up early and work mostly in daylight. Saw the video from Van Cleef & Arpel, he said it's better in natural daylight but he was working on jewels so maybe it's different. But I think it's probably the same back then.

Globes are cool and all but just like traditional maps, they aren’t accurate. Since the earth is round, you can’t make it flat, and since globes are odten perfect spheres, a lot fo accuracy is lost. Which is why in a way, Satellite Maps are a lot better. However, I do love the aesthetic

I often spent time in grade school looking at globes . Rand McNally was the country I most wanted to visit.

I'd love to have one hell of a large globe by those globemakers some day.

Ghana is legit one of the weirdest but still the creative places I’ve seen. After knowing about their hand painted movie posters, The outrageous coffins didn’t surprise me. I’m like “of course it’s Ghana”

How are they outrageous?? I mean funerals are for the living, dead people couldn't care less. But I guess not everyone sees death as positively as I do

ice cream jams you don’t think being buried in a huge hammer is a little out there? Like we put your body in a hammer and into the ground funerals alone are a little outrageous and correct for the living but you’re spending money to I guess honor someone to go a bit further and have like a Alligator coffin seems a bit MORE out there. Not knocking it, it’s just creative but a bit out there

The first automaton bird was sweet and cute, the dudes ones (whilst he's undeniably very talented) are nightmare fuel
