Silversmithing Tutorial: Make an Opal Dragon Claw Ring
Вставка
- Опубліковано 6 лис 2024
- This tutorial shows how to make a whimsical Ring with a talon motif. I was basing it off some similar dragon claw rings I've seen before. The stone I used is a 12x16 mm. This is an advanced level project. For materials, I used 8 gauge (3.25 mm) sterling half round wire, 18 gauge (1.02 mm) sterling sheet, and 3/16 inch (4.76 mm) fine silver bezel strip in 26 gauge (.41 mm). As always, I use hard silver sheet solder and a liquid flux.

That turned out awesome, Chad! You are always so inspiring and I love your design ideas. There are many talented metalsmiths / jewelry designers out there, but sometimes they stick to a certain one style and their pieces all look the same. I appreciate you working in all different styles. It makes things very interesting. Thank you!
Thanks Julie:). It's more fun to try different styles!
❤
Thanks WizardKitty!
Ooh this looks good!
Thanks Julia!
What a fantastic design! You do such a great job of explaining things... Thank you for your efforts! 🤗
Glad you like it Jon! Thank you:)
Different and interesting….great job…thank you for sharing…❤️❤️❤️
Thanks Heddita!
Very creative and cool design, professionally executed and explained! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you Alexsar!
That is a fantastic idea for a ring.
Thanks, but I can’t take credit for this style. I modeled it after some others I found online, so credit for design should go to those who made them first:)
I saw the original design before. I like the way you made this ring, much easier than the original way. 👍👍
Thanks Bryan!
Very creative, and beautiful stone! You have so much patience to file all those talons!! You need to keep that one for yourself!!
Thanks Andrea! It didn't take as long as you might think:)
I am in the process of watching all your videos am enjoying them very much
I am really glad Debbie!
I'm doing the same... it's amazing the amount of material and knowledge he has shared with us!
Always a pleasure watching your videos! Very informative, especially for someone like me looking to start out metalsmithing.
Thanks Trekquest:). Glad you enjoyed it!
I'm pretty new to the game, still useing my crème brulet torch. I may upgrade soon as I find it a bit anoying haveing to refill gass all the time and wait for it to settle.
Your ring turned out awesome! 😊👌
Thanks Elin:)
very creative, unique beautifully executed. Do you make your drawings to scale?
Thanks Verda! I generally do so I can use them a a template:)
Wow, Chad, what a cool design! Your channel is always a first stop for me when I'm looking for inspiration for projects, and this design is right up my alley! I am definitely going to try and replicate this for myself. I facet my own stones, and I can't decide what would look the coolest in this setting. I'm thinking a dark red garnet, but then again, I thought either a peridot or blue topaz might look cool as well. What do you think? Thanks for your effort in providing continued content for the silversmithing community, we all appreciate you.
Thanks Mike! I kind of wanted to do a garnet for this, but didn't have one in the right size and shape:)
Very cool ring. Do you collect your filings?
Thanks! Yes, they end up in the scrap bin to sell back for credit:)
When you are shaping the bezel to fit the band, do yo ever use sandpaper on top of the band then sand the bezel down to the correct shape?
I haven't, but I bet that would work well:)
💜💜💜💜
Thank you Lishal!
Chuck a buncha cholder... i think you meant chunka shucka shocker, but that's just my opinion 🙃
Cool piece!
Thanks Lishal:). I was having trouble with my words:)
Love this ring design, can't wait to try it. I just watched your quick rings for stock inventory, very informative.. what silver stock would you suggest to keep at all times? Do you keep all gauges of wire and sheet or just certain gauges and type? Thank you 😊
Hello Mazkay! I wish I could afford to keep some of everything on hand:). I don't think I've done a video on what sizes of stock I keep around--I may do that in the near future. As far as band materials, I keep 8 and 6 gauge, some small low dome half round, and various pattern wires. For sheet, I keep 18, 22, and 26 gauge on hand most of the time. Hope this helps!
