Weeks before I was born the Boston Celtics swept the Milwaukee Bucks out of the NBA East Finals. My dad it was the most lopsided conference Finals he had ever seen. Looking back on this series 3 years later, THIS was my version of that. I wouldn't say it was effortless or easy but at no point did I ever think Carolina was going to win a game even while it was going on. Sucks the Bruins couldn't seal the deal in the Finals

In 1970, the season was 78 games so adding 4 more games and 20 teams in nearly 50 years means it's all about greed now? Not sure how you come to that conclusion. I surely don't agree at all. I think it's about spreading the gospel of the game. The intensity and speed is more so now while hatred between teams has simmered down due to the advent of free agency. My dad, who was an all-state athlete in several sports, who could have gone pro in 2 of them (went into the military instead) said the same as you about hockey and the games themselves were too long to boot. Then I analyzed each major North American pro sport with him. He changed his opinion by the time I got done. But he has always said that pro hockey players are the nicest of all pro athletes. Must be why he invited them to breakfast to our house pretty much every weekend during the season and they were more than grateful; I went to a ton of games for free as a kid along with getting free pucks and sticks. I saw no love for Dougie from his former B's teammates so far or towards Nash in the last series. And in 1970, the NHL played 78 games with 12 teams and in 50 years they've added only 4 more games to the schedule and 19 teams to the league. When you run a marathon, do you start off sprinting? Smart teams in today's NHL keep pace to stay in the race and deal with injuries along the way and some more than others; the first battle of attrition to get through. So today's NHL mentality is to make sure you are in the race by the American Thanksgiving. The 2nd battle begins in January. Jockeying for position. Look at the 4 remaining teams and look at their winning percentages since January. They all had the best winning percentages with Tampa being the exception and I said it at the beginning of the playoffs; Tampa will be eliminated in the first round because they wanted to sprint during a marathon and will have no gas left when it counted most. I wasn't wrong. This season, Boston had a ton of injuries to key players for long stretches and they got it done most of the year by committee with role players and rookies when most analysts were clueless and wondering how the hell are these guys winning?? It was that long season that helped them get to be where they are now. They finished 3rd overall, 2nd in the conference. All we heard all year long was about the dominance of Tampa. Great but obviously when it got tough they fell apart. No depth or character a long season helps shape. They used the long season badly. They wanted to flex in the mirror, admiring themselves when they should have been focusing on what April will bring, the 3rd and final battle of attrition and Tampa blew that big time and CBJ exposed them in the very first game and fractured Tampa to the point where they couldn't recover. Chances are with Tampa, it was 20 guys in 20 limos before and after the game while the Bruins were all on one bus together, treating that rookie the same way as they would Chara or Bergy. You could say the same about CBJ, Canes and the Blues as well. A long season building a team breeds that success a dozen or 2 games won't. It was the same way 50 years ago when they played 78 regular season games instead of 82. That has not changed. It's the team that keeps their focus over 82 games that win Cups, not winning 62 games and the President's trophy. Look how often the President's Trophy winners get eliminated and never make the finals since it was introduced. Mental toughness, not just physical over 82 games wins Cups. The game has changed for sure because the players are faster and the teams overall prepare better. I think more teams understand what it takes to get to the finals and playing like it is game 7 of the Cup finals in October isn't going to get you to the dance. Never has but building a team over the long season will get you to the promise land. That was totally lost on Tampa this year, that's for sure. I think it is an exciting thing to watch during the course of a season too. We see the game different ways I guess
