Soorasamharam Event organised at Arulmigu Balathandayuthapani Temple, Waterfall Road, Penang on 18th November 2023.
According to Skanda Purana, the demons under the leadership of Surapadman, Simhamukha and Tarakasura defeated the Devas and took over the earth. They started harassing the human beings and there was Adharma all around.
Lord Muruga then appeared to fight the demons and the fight continued for six days and killed all the attendants and friends of demon Surapadman. On the final day, there was intense battle between Muruga and Soorapadman.
The Thanneermalaiyan, a king and a conqueror with his most trusted commander, Veerabaghu and his army, avenged and destroyed the king of sooras along his army for the injustice done to the helpless clan of devas. After the negotiation failed and not agreeing to the terms brought in by the commander Veerabaghu, a war declared to kill Surapadman.
Finally, Lord Muruga pierced the body of Surapadman with his Vel. Suddenly, demon Surapadman transformed into a huge mango tree but Lord Muruga cut the tree vertically into two pieces with His Vel.
One half got modified into a peacock while the other turned into a cock. The peacock became the Lord's Vahana, while the cock, turned into an emblem on his flag. Lord Murugan defeated the trio and restored peace.
