Great videos Tish, I've been watching more lately. Can I just point out one thing though, the center "arm rest" that slides back and forth does have another purpose. It is for when you need to make adjustments on the screen while driving you rest your arm on it and your fingers have way more control.
Had a good look around one of these at the local Renault dealership today. I was really impressed. If you are very tall as I am, you will be amazed at the leg room and driving position. Same for the Austrell, and even the captur incredibly (the old one was really uncomfortable)
Good review Tish. Fantastic looking car and i always liked that colour. It looks massive but its a pity it doesn't have an adjustable boot floor. Something i'd need with a bad back. Sounds ecomonical too.
I mean this basically ruined the second hand market for the BMW x6 and GLE coupe. Same drive, much better tech and better looks, in a new car under warranty.
I don't like the current tradition of building flat backseats, you sit in a €80k car and at the backseat it feels like you sit on bench instead of a sofa. That's way better in the Rafale. A decent 4 seater!!
@@Cyberdyne-kg8ku Yes I do. My imagination is very very good thank you. I imagine a time when all of humanity will just get along when there will be no greed and no one poor or homeless. When everyone can just be who they are and be happy as long as they harm no one else.

Bigger and bigger! The British infrastructure just isn’t geared up for huge cars! Practically every car park is built with the idea of car size from the 70’s and 80’s, yes they fit between the white lines but only just, you and other people struggle to get in and out! Developers need to start making car park spaces wider, yes, I’m well aware this means less spaces but well worth it in my opinion!
We need manufacturers to stop making such big cars and get back to making smaller ones and for people to buy them. The how to is easy. The bigger the car, the higher the tax simple. You might say but this will just means the rich and well if people all in the bigger safer cars no because if you want to drive a big car over a certain size then you should be made go speciel tests in it to make sure you are a responsible driver and to retake the driving test every 2 years but in a normal sized car you could retake the driving test every 6 years. That way, all drivers on the roads would be much safer, and everyone would be safer.
Same in CZ. You cannot even park two modern cars next to each other. There is no space to get out and some people say make smaller cars? But smaller cars are not that safe
Great Review.... I've taken the plunge and bought the top spec model, and have been driving it for the last couple of weeks. I've had many Renault/Dacia cars over the years. The three stalks on the right are not a problem. Immediately knew where to go for the Volume controls etc (bottom), Wipers in the middle (set to auto) so no need to touch it, and the top stalk is only used when choosing R, N, D or Park. There is a lot of Tech, and I've used it all... Though it might be a gimmick but the heads up display is great. Did a test run at a steady 60mph and achieved 58.1mpg on a new stretch of dual carriageway. The car switches automatically between Petrol, Battery, both Petrol & Battery & sometimes just coasting to propel the car forwards. Hopefully the car proves to be reliable. My only gripe is that the user manual is built into the car, would of preferred a 'book' like the good old days.
Hiya tish good review again Nice Renault just think its abit to big and wide and it does remind me of a bmw X6 from the back Head unit is amazing looking tho definitely Renault up there game now just like they did with the new clio alpine its shocking how many new cars keep coming out x
Very good review, you come across as very knowledgable about the car, and touched on lots of other subjects that others did not. I'm seriously considering this car, so very helpful!
I have an Austral in Flame Red and I love it. Mine is not the Alpine so it doesn’t have the 360 camera which I had on my Qashquai and I do miss it but it wasn’t a deal buster. The google on board is great and the car is a great drive, I am running at about 54 mpg in the Summer and a bit less in Winter, I am not a sporty driver but I doubt I could hit 60.1 mpg. When I was back at the dealer for my first service they had the Rafale in the showroom in an exclusive to that model and absolutely lovely blue colour. I would have it for the colour alone.
The Rafale doesn't really make sense against the Austral, in the same way that the Arkana doesn't make sense compared to the Symbioz. I'm thinking of getting an Austral next, but the Rafale doesn't look worth the extra over the Austral to me. Great review Tish
If you are looking for an SUV with a less conventional style, the choice of the Rafale can be justified, especially since it will have a 300 hp 4X4 version, which the Austral or Espace do not have.
it is all very good but the 0-60 performance is sluggish - needs a 6.5 to 7 sec 0-60 to make it a consideration for me. The 300hp plug in hybrid will need 5.5 to 6.5 to be competitive along with a 140 mph top speed.
This is a beautiful car, am looking for an new (business) car, in my opinion the Austral is a bit civil/oldish and this Rafale is a more sportier model with a little 'agression', so the Rafale add defenitely something different to the model program, when our company approves the Rafale I will choose this one 👍
I still can't forget, how Renault cheaps out on the 7" media in cars.. They get only a basic screen and 2 white bars, where the additional info screens should be! At least unlock the "old school" Speedo and tachymetre view Renault!!!
No Tish. The whole idea of the radio controls on its own stalk on the steering wheel us safety thst you never have to talk your eyes of the road while using it and that it never moves unlike ones that are on steering wheels. Besides, you do have other controls in the touchscreen, and before these, they were on both the radio and steering wheel stalk.
Great video, lovely car, but around £40k for the base model 🙈🙈. Saying that on lease or PCP, thats how most will buy it, it might be fairly reasonable.
Yes! And there is also going to be a lesser model released I believe. I only noticed when editing this video that there is only 2 very high specs available
I really like the idea behind the Rafale. I like I don't have to plug in the car for electric charging since the possibilities of public charging are bad where I live. But I have some concerns regarding the battery. It's relatively small. That gives the advantage of charging it quickly. But it's running out of power quickly as well. That on the other hand means it will collect a lot of charging cycles in a short period of time. A lot of charging cycles will lead to a dead battery sooner or later. We all know this effect from our laptops or mobile phones. Even if the battery is protected by a max charge of 80% it will die...
I wasn’t invited to the international, couldn’t make the UK launch and have covered it on John Banks channel first…. FINALLY I have one coming at the end of the month and I’m very excited!
@@AutoSocialUK I’m so glad. I’ve had mine since November in the iconic model. if I bump into you again in Gridserve Braintree, I’ll let you have a look around 😉
Good review but again another SUV that I don't want. Sale of SUVs keep going up and production of anything else , well it's down isn't it. The choice is which SUV do you settle for.
Another excellent review Tish and your enthusiasm and professionalism make these reviews a joy to watch. Keep up the excellent work. However - the car itself….its a lovely car and looks really nice. Colour wouldn’t be my choice and Renault’s styling is very on point at the moment. Love the dash design but not sure about all those stalks behind the steering wheel. Do like the starter button on the wheel but all those buttons on the same wheel look a tad fussy. But the big elephant in the room….no one, and I mean no one is going to spend up to £50k on a Renault. The price is bonkers. You’d need to find someone who’d say - no I don’t want BMW, Mercedes-Benz, AUDI, DS, Alfa-Romeo, Lexus, Genesis or Jaguar/Land Rover - I want to spend up to £50k on a Renault. It would need to come with a free Kelly Brook to even be considered and even then it’s a stretch. The brand just cannot stretch to that. Maybe they should have sold it as an entry-level Alpine but even then that’s a stretch… Watching that cat I was reminded sadly of the Rover 800 Coupe. It was a good looking car. It was smart, comfortable and classy. Meant to be a halo car for the brand. But at the time you couldn’t justify the money being charged for one because of where Rover was in the marketplace. I know it’s not planned to be a massive seller but I feel it’ll struggle to sell at all at that price. But that’s my tuppence worth….
Really. Why not. I mean, people easily spend 50k to 60k maybe more on Hyundai's and KIAs now so why not 50k on a Renault? They do after all make the best cars in the World.
I was thinking the same. My brand new fully equipped powerful Tesla costs less than this thing with a complex mix of a tiny petrol turbo, gearbox, battery and motor.... To drive as much as possible on electricity, delivering no real world performance. What a joke. They don't have a sense of the competition out there. By the way, Tish, how about cabine noise? Sounds quite high in the video, at this pricepoint.
That handle no one likes is so your hand doesn’t bounce up and down when using the touch screen, you can rest your forearm on it and keep your hand more steady.
i have a 73 plat austral alpine spec and sorry it looks better and drives better and will do claimed 683 miles to a tank of fuel - i don't think u can compare that car to the austral its just an upgraded arkana my car around town is doing 70 plus mpg my wife actually got 85 on a 30 mile run at low speeds
Renault a su rebondir avec son design, ses options. . . Mais niveau fiabilité, par rapport aux japonaises, je ne sais pas ou situer le curseur. . Anyway, Merci pour la présentation
I don't like or see the point of these coupe style (sloping back) SUV's. If you want a coupe style car just build a normal one like the New Honda Civic. It will look better and be more aerodynamic.
Great review Tish, but i do think that Renault should stick to manufacturing small to medium sized cars. You'd have to be one hell of a salesman to convince a buyer to part with up to £50k for one !! Remember the Vel Satis ??
Their small cars are kinda okay. This one is just rivaling competitors like 408, providing a full hybrid + 4-control in a suv coupe branch may attract some buyers, but the whole segment won't sell many imo. Conversly, what French cars have lost now is just the modularity at mid-large sized level, their Espace is terrible in flexibility, also new 5008 is bigger but less flexible, no independent 2 row seaters for example.
@yzhou-sc6gs kinda OK. The Clio is the best car in its class. It's classy, stylish, reliable, well built, well equipped and great to drive as well as safe. Whst more could one want from a car? Renault do after all make The Best Cars in the World.
I am just so shocked they’ve got and released not one but two large and slightly pricey SUV’s, I will definitely ask around at John Banks to see how they’re selling. Totally agree with the other comment, there are so many SUV’s and so little GOOD 7 seaters?
@jeffmcarthur : agree 100%. The French tried numerous times to compete in the (German) premium segment. Never succeeded. Remember Saffrane, Vel Satis, Avantime... This is a nice try, again...
@@jeffmcarthur1963 They don't have to part with 50k if they have a car to trade in. So, 20k for current car, then all they need is 30k and they get a great car. It's great value. Renault are better built and more reliable than any of the German brands now.
Yup, people forget that it's the whole hybrid system that drives the car and the ICE is just a part of it. Actually, it's a properly sized engine and a genius move from Renault engineers that yielded such a brilliant mileage. I own Rafale's sibling Espace and I'm completely mesmerized by the technology under the hood
Name another manufacturer that sells a car in either full EV mode or self charging hybrid. I have the Austral and it’s plenty powerful enough and better still I always get over yes over 60mpg in mixed driving. So full tank of fuel and a range over 700 miles. You can’t complain about a car because you don’t like the colour! They come in other colours too and yes, you worked it out, slide the handle forward and you get your cover! Steering g wheel controls are just so easy to use without letting go of the wheel. Wiper stalk never needs touching as auto wipe self activates, centre console volume buttons is just plain stupid when there is already a volume control on the centre screen too. All you 30 somethings are so thick about rear wipers, all rear windows get covered in rain when parked and bird crap too. Try getting that off without a wiper. H it looks good with a sloping back but you failed to mention how much smaller than the Austral the boot is. When you one day have children they don’t look out of windows anymore they watch dvd on tv in the rear. You can’t judge ride quality when you everywhere in sport mode! I do wish reviewers actually knew something about cars, engine size stopped being an issue well over 20 years ago. As for rearward visibility spend a few months driving a van, rear window viewing folk are a danger to everyone, that’s why there are door mirrors! And finally you should be ashamed only getting up towards 50 mpg, learn to drive and drive to the road conditions, it will teach you a lot more. I don’t drive slow and nothing overtakes me unless they are over the limit. 60 mpg is easy to achieve.
Sorry but I can't get behind the bland black on black interior. Everything is plastic... black plastic with plastic switches. Add in no sunroof and Renault have made another dark interior car. Add to this it's 1.2ltr engine and I'm out... Give it 250 to 350bhp in all electric and I might reconsider it.
I’m currently driving my 6th Renault, a Megane petrol that is sporty to drive and yet frugal, but I don’t know what I’ll buy to replace it. I’m sick to death of these generic bloated SUV clones that Renault (and every other manufacturer) is spewing out. The Megane e-tech, the scenic, arkana, austral and this all look the same from a distance. Pure boring garbage that no one asked for and judging by the sales figures, no one wants.
Thanks Tish great review as always . Awkward looking car, ratio of metal to glass is all wrong, hate the painted metal inside the car, down the B pillar, cost cutting at its worst .
I know the U.K has a massive obesity problem, is this why cars are getting ridiculous large and heavy, as said elsewhere here car parks in the U.K. and most of Europe don’t have large bays and on street parking is the same, I’ve watched people trying to park these huge trucks, normally with just one person in it, the driver, I know several people who say their are so many SUV lol that’s a joke name, that they can’t see ahead 😂😂
All that tech - and leather - and they still cheap out on interior window frame covers - it's my pet hate seeing exterior paint coloured window frames showing on the inside of any vehicle - it just makes it look cheap and nasty.
Combining your elegant presentation with a clothing style that makes you look more professional will also increase the level of respect you have for your job.
This is not for you and your level of income. This is for other people. So, keep your opinions accordingly your salary. The car is really good. I have one since last July.
Nasty vehicles that will die after the long term rental is over.. thst 1.2 litre engine is only there due to crippling CO2 tax (le malus) that the French government introduced..
I have bought new Renault megane grandtour and I can say that it is a brand to avoid. Electronics and sofware are very bad. cheap plastic parts even on crucial places like engine mounts, door handles, door stopers... lack of water protection for the engine, wiring, hoses... just terrible. I said this after three time Renault owner. It is cheaper than other brands but new models wont last 5 years.. they will fall apart.
I really like what Renault are doing at the moment, and I prefer this to the Peugeot equivalent. I'm looking forward to seeing the New Renault 5 but I hope that new models in the Renault pipeline will veer away from Peugeot designs, which I find too 'in your face' and 'over the top'.

I don't like or see the point of these coupe style (sloping back) SUV's. If you want a coupe style car just build a normal one like the New Honda Civic. It will look better and be more aerodynamic.
So much space in the back! You looked child sized back there
I think its a nice looking car but tbh if i was going to buy one id wait 12-18 months and get nearly new as i feel will have terrible depreciation
That is a fair point, we shall wait and see. Renaults finance packages are usually pretty strong
First thing that comes to mind - WHY, indeed.
...1.2L in a car this size, oh my god.
@@puciohenzap891 but it’s not just a 1.2, it has 2 electric motors. 200bhp is pretty respectable.
I have the Austral with the same engine...trust me it's a belter and it shifts!
The days of judging performance by engine size are long gone.
@@ThrottleBody Engine dies after 4-5 years
The only thing that doesn’t make me yawn is the price!!!
That’s fair enough, they’re not for everyone
Hey Steven, you seem a little upset, would you like a cuddle?
Sorry but I can't get behind the bland black on black interior. Everything is plastic... black plastic with plastic switches. Add in no sunroof and Renault have made another dark interior car. Add to this it's 1.2ltr engine and I'm out... Give it 250 to 350bhp in all electric and I might reconsider it.
If Renault put engine from Megan 4 RS in Rafal i buy it !!!
Genuinely doesnt look as spacious as my grandland x in the back
I’m currently driving my 6th Renault, a Megane petrol that is sporty to drive and yet frugal, but I don’t know what I’ll buy to replace it.
Interesting and fair point Richard!
Yes it is crazy! I’m driving an MX-5 at the moment and I just feel absolutely tiny!! 😱
@@AutoSocialUK I bet a lot of!!! More fun, and easier to park, lol.
All that tech - and leather - and they still cheap out on interior window frame covers - it's my pet hate seeing exterior paint coloured window frames showing on the inside of any vehicle - it just makes it look cheap and nasty.
It looks like a fire truck 🙂
Combining your elegant presentation with a clothing style that makes you look more professional will also increase the level of respect you have for your job.
Casual reviews, casual clothes ☺️ I’m quite happy thank you
We DONT NEED such a huge car! we have not asked for one we need smaller more affordable cars
Uhhh...speak for yourself! 😉
Wrong we do need it and want it
This is not for you and your level of income. This is for other people. So, keep your opinions accordingly your salary. The car is really good. I have one since last July.
Will forever be known as the Renault Raffle, it looks like something you won on the Tombola!
false Lamborghini Urus.
Looks nice tho.
Peugeot 408 for me please
I really want a chance to have another good look at them side by side 👀
@@AutoSocialUK OH please 🙏
What is point of this car?
Giving us enough choice. What would you like all to buy and overpay for GERMANS who charge us for every goddamn option.
I mean… I literally start by saying pretty much that 😅
Big sexy car ❤
Thought it was a ninja turtle 😊
Just need Leonardo, Donatello, and Michelangelo now 🐢
Nasty vehicles that will die after the long term rental is over.. thst 1.2 litre engine is only there due to crippling CO2 tax (le malus) that the French government introduced..
In 6 years time this car will be recycled and turned into a washing machine,..in a few years time no-one will even remember this car
The Ozempic isn't working..
Well that’s lucky I don’t take Ozempic and I am perfectly happy with my weight isn’t it 😊
All modern cars are crap
Too much to go wrong
Heavy bulbous suv,s that no one needs
I have bought new Renault megane grandtour and I can say that it is a brand to avoid. Electronics and sofware are very bad. cheap plastic parts even on crucial places like engine mounts, door handles, door stopers... lack of water protection for the engine, wiring, hoses... just terrible. I said this after three time Renault owner. It is cheaper than other brands but new models wont last 5 years.. they will fall apart.
What a stupid headline. Seriously stupid.
40k for a Renault! Bwah haha😂
And what you spend 40k on, some German rubbish maybe?
@@sharonec5419Can you translate to English please? 😅
Over sized !
It is a big car! But then there is plenty of smaller
Great headline. Absolutely pointless and utterly underpowered.
Awful Rafale!🫣
Hahah what don’t you like about it?
@AutoSocialUK just a bit of fun with a pun Tish!🤣
Copy-paste of Škoda Enyaq Coupe.
Another box...with wheels.... Frances cars are garbage
Not for me Tish. Another bland design.
Прям Фольксваген какой-то получился! Мне нравится!)
