this adjusted scoring its a useless statistic. gretzky spans his peers by 1000 points. the gap between gretzky1# and jagr2# is about the same gape as jagr2# and paul karyia#100. no modern day player spans the next by even 100. gretzky would do today what he did yesteryear. if jagr was able to play in both the gretzky era and todays era theirs no reason to say that a prime gretzky would wreck todays game by the same margins.

Just shy of 1,000 points in his career in the NHL, he paved the way for more American-born players to really shine in the league.

Someone needed to be that guy. Edit: also to be that guy with you. It’s a pet peeve of mine when people say something increased “exponentially” when it didn’t. That means something very specific but people often just use it to vaguely say “a lot”. He does this when he mentions the increase of scoring in the 1940’s but it hadn’t even doubled. It’s a nitpick for sure, but I think one worth making because some things in life DO increase exponentially, so it’s important for people to understand the gravity of that term.
Rob, good video, but you are kind of missing the point. Gretzky isn't considered the best just bcause he scored alot of points. He's considered the best because he was so much better and got so many more points than everybody else at the time. For example, last season McDavid was incredible, putting up a whooping 153 points, which is 20% more than #2 in the league: Draisaitl at 128 points. Compare these with 3 different seasons from the 80's. In the 82-83 season, #2 in the league points wise was Peter Stastny with 124 points, Gretzky #1 had 196 which is a 58% increase. In the 83-84 season, Coffey was #2 with 126 points, Gretzky #1 had a 62% points increase at 205 points. In the 86-87 season Kurri was #2 with 108 points and Gretzky #1 had a 70% points increase with 183 points. These are Gretzky compared to the number 2 in points in the entire league. Gretzky, in the 80's, frequently scored between 40-60% more points than number 2 in the league, sometimes, like shown above it was even up to 70% higher. If McDavid had scored 70% more points than #2 in the league last season, he would have scored 217 points compared to Draisaitl's 128. But in his best season, McDavid just barely got 20% more in his best ever season. Usually it's been alot closer. Don't get me wrong, I think that McDavid is one of the best ever, but if we compare players to their peers AT THE TIME, it's not even a close comparison whatsoever. And the only way you can compare players is between who they play against. If McDavid or Crosby had played in the 80's they would have been visibly worse players than we have seen them be in their primes because of worse equipment, training, workouts, nutrition etc.
The skill floor is higher today than it was in the past though. For example, in 1922 the women’s high jump record was 1.46m. In 1986 the record was set at 2.08m. In the intervening period, there were about 55 different changes in that record. The point I’m making, is that while Gretzky was undoubtedly a great player, that doesn’t make him the best player of all time. Was he ahead of his time in terms of skill? Absolutely. Was the skill gap between him and other players the widest during his playing days? Sure. Do I think Crosby and McDavid could absolutely wipe the floor with him? You bet.
Also, I think it's impossible to put McDavid in the GOAT conversation given that he has never even won a single conference final game, much less won four cups like Gretzky.
@@benguin_ But it's not a fair comparison. Take any player from the 80's, not just Gretzky, you cannot compare them with players that play 40 years later. The players of today have access to better equipment, training, nutrition, health systems, protection, supplements, etc. They have better support systems, it's a much cleaner sport and alot of the rules have changed. If you do a straight comparison with the players from 40 years ago with the ones playing today you are giving them a massive disadvantage that has nothing to do with how good or bad players they were. If McDavid or Crosby had been born in the same year as Gretzky or Mike Bossy for example, they would have been visibly worse compared to his modern day counter part and they would have been alot more vulnerable. If you do a straight comparison, you're effectively disregarding the past 35-40 years of hockey and that's unfair to all of these players.

Rule changes, tactics, playing style, technique, travel time, games per season etc are all areas where there are marked differences. Again, was Gretzky ahead of his time in terms of skill? Absolutely. Does that make him the greatest player of all time? Absolutely not.
Enjoyed the video, but some notes: 5:12 Gordie Howe didn't "make the shocking decision to leave the NHL for the WHA." He had been retired from playing for a few years, even inducted into the HHOF, but when his sons got signed with the Houston Aeroes, he was convinced by the team to suit up and play with his sons. It's unlikely he would've ever played again after retiring in 1971 if not for his sons. 8:27 Bobby Orr won 2 cups, not 4 lol...

I had to correct him on Sean Couturier not being a disappointment when he was one of the best shutdown centers in the league while playing on the 3rd line and scoring about 0.5 points per game prior to him becoming a 70-80 point per year guy. I feel like he just looks at raw point totals without knowing the players and their histories that well.
Howie Morenz is such an underrated legend. He was the McDavid of his time, he was much faster and more skilled than anyone else. Very sad end to his career
Just watched this video to make sure Mario Lemieux was on here. I'm from Ontario, Canada, so I love Gretzky, but man, Mario could just dominate a game like no one else. He's definitely the most talented player I've ever seen.

John 'Joe' Tonelli was one of the greatest gamers the game has ever seen and an integral part of one of its greatest 4 Cup dynasties. If No Cup Conner played with half of Tonellis intensity and tenacity he just might actually achieve some playoff success
Certainly, Joe was a big factor in helping Bobby Orr get his 3rd and 4th cups. Along with a guy named Broten, who mostly everybody has forgotten about.
I never heard of Joe Tonelli either. But I almost fell off my chair when he said he had never heard of Neal Broten. To be fair, I'm probably a bit older but if you're doing hockey videos you really should know the very good players, not just the greats.

JJ68 is the most dedicated player to the sport ever! Man is 2nd in the NHL, 54 and still playing pro hockey, and he barely gets mentioned almost every damn time. That makes me sad.
I know he was only playing for a short while but im surprised joe malone didn't come up in this video. According to his stats he was by far and beyond the best goal scorer for the seasons he played, even putting up 44 goals in 20 games. Search him up, i think he scored 8 goals in a single game once.
Quick note at 1:17, it seems like simple math to multiply number of games x number of teams, but since every game counts as a game for 2 teams, there's actually only 1,312 games in an nhl season. Good video though!
If you’re going to count both teams in one game played, then you would need to count both team’s goals-per-game. 2624*3 or 1312*6 is the same number. But “goals per game” is almost universally a per-team metric. So 2624 team-games played multiplied by goals per game, a per-team-game number, gives a goals total.
There are so many factors to the way the game is today compared to other decades, that you cant just use adjusted scoring to say so and so would get x points in 2023.
Respect to Lidstrom but I think Hasek also makes a case for the best player of the 2000's like that man was so dominant and it woulda been nice to get some goalie love in this video

Interesting with the same comparison for goalies gaa. Grant Fuhr had just below 4 in the 80's. In the late 90's he had 2,5 with the blues. Was he a better goalie then? No way.
I lived inside hockey books from the 70s,80s,90s and yeah Neal Brotten was for sure a US legend, if Minnesota wins the cup in 91 (LOL), Brotten likely wins the Smythe, tho Brian Bellows and the goalie were stars too

In my opinion, I think Mcdavid is the new GOAT. Don't get me wrong, Gretsky is unreal, and is 2nd place, but to play at the level Mcdavid does, with the current skill of the NHL is just unreal. Not even an oilers fan, but we should start giving him that.

Howe didn't leave the NHL for the WHA . He retired from the NHL and worked for the Wings for two years. Hull on the other hand scored 50 goals 71/72 and left the NHL to sign with the WHA , he might have been the highest goal scorer had he stayed .
Gretzky and Lemieux were awesome, of course, but factor in that there were many goalies that had above a 3.50 GAA(some even being over 4.00) and below .900 Sv%. This wasn't just a couple of goalies like that, most of them were like that. Only goalies like Roy were able to maintain lower GAA than that after the 1986-1987 season. This was also at a time when most (95% were Canadian players), once the league opened up to a lot of Russian and European talent, things drastically started to change. Better range of goalies, and players. Teams also started adopting new defensive strategies like the trap and clutch and grab. Also a huge one, there were a huge amount of newly formed teams back in the 70s/80s and 90s whom most of has really bad teams in general. In the current era, the things that have changed is the removing of the 2 line pass, the trapezoid in place now, 3 vs 3 OT and the shootout. Those all came after the departure of Gretzky and Lemieux. However there is one rule change that would have made many of the dynasty teams impossible in today's game and that is the Salary cap. Also the game now lacks the bruiser 4th lines as well. How many goals were probably scored against many of the talentless goons, whom most of would not even crack an AHL team in this day and age. You can't really compare eras. It's not just about goal average, it also about rule changes, equipment, training etc,.
This is my top 5 list from 2000 1 Gretzky 2 Orr 3 Lemieux 4 Gordie Howe 5 Maurice Richard This is my new top 5 1 Gretzky 2 Orr 3 Lemieux 4 Howe 5 Jagr As you can see not much has changed in 24 years, especially the top 4. I doubt this list will change much in the next 24 years. I will not count active players on my list until they retire. In the case of Lemieux, he was retired still and came out of retirement at the end of 2000 Edit: I know no goalies were not included on this list, it harder to compare goalies to skaters than the other positions comparing to each other. Consider this mind boggling record : Bobby Orr lead the NHL a record (6) times. His average Plus / Minus those (6) seasons was a +80. That's not a misprint, +80. During those (6) seasons Orr was (2) Scoring titles, came in runner up 3 more times & won the Norris Trophy all those seasons he lead the NHL in Plus Minus. A feat that will never ever be duplicated. Orr stands alone as the most dominant player of all time. Folks, you simply had to be there.
See Coffey was pretty much as good as Orr offensively, for sure. But then you factor in that Coffey didn't even hold a candle to Orr as a defenseman. Coffey for the most part wasn't that good in that position (even Ray Bourque who never had a 100 point season was better defensively), he would have been better as a forward. Orr revolutionized the way defense can be played and did so while being heads and shoulders above everyone else defensively. His +/- speaks volumes about this. And did no one mention that with modern equipment, Orr would have easily given McDavid a run for his money in speed. He was lightning quick when he played, and all while having bad knees.
My dad always said that aside the greats you named, among the best to ever play were : Larry Robinson, Bob Gainey, Michel Goulet, Marcel Dionne, Gilbert Perreault...MIKE BOSSY! My picks were from my era : Teemu Selanne, Pavel Bure, Alex Mogilny, Sergei Fedorov and my goat Jaromir Jagr.
Crosby, like Lindros, has always been a puck watcher. Concussions should never happen but when you skate with head down you are much more likely to have several concussions
Crosby > McDavid. Dude came into a team who didnt have a million number one picks and lost half of his prime to concussions, significabtly lowering his best seasons and overall totals. Not to mention, it was lower scoring than the last few seasons. I also think both are good leaders, but Crosby is a GREAT leader.
There's not just one GOAT, there are several GOATS and arguments can me made for all of them.. I mean, Mario Lemieux and Wayne Gretzky have almost identical career PPG averages. Look, it's all subjective but it really comes down to preference and which style you prefer.
I'm so glad the title is Best player from every (ERA) People argue who the greatest of all time not thinking that human evolution is a thing the skill of players today is unmatched. that being said giving praise to legends of the past is a must cause without them the game would be the same
Couple things: Crosby has 2 Harts, not 3, the Rocket Richard wasn't awarded until 1999 and that Gretzky is the goat is far from unanimous; true, Orr didn't play long, but the things he did were so outstanding (you didn't even mention his absurd dominance in the +/- statistic) that many people still say he is the best ever. There are also many who will tell you Gordie Howe because he was more complete than Gretzky and like you mentioned, some people observed Lemieux's talent and think he had more of if than Gretzky.
I saw Lemieux play once - I even won the in rink 'contest' a Thrifty car rental 'move of the game' and got to sit at center ice 6 rows up from my nose bleeds. Lemieux was sick then but it was before his diagnosis so at the time we didn't know. He was horrible in that game - he just floated around shift after shift after shift. Until the last minute ....... down by a goal (this was before the OT era) he decided to play and scored two goals in the final minute of the game - pretty much doing it on his own too with no help from teammates. It's like the Jets (Game was in Wpg) were just standing around (they weren't). After the game I had told my buddy "Could you imagine the score if he played like that the whole game - what a lazy bum'. Again, unbeknownst to us that he was suffering with cancer at that time - something that would have grounded most of us never mind play a professional sport. Gretzky was the smartest player to ever live no doubt about it - but in terms of physicality and talent it's not even close Lemieux was best (I saw both play and no one dominated like Mario did when he was on his game). McDavid is easily 3rd given what he can do at full speed - Bobby Orr is 4th only because he played in a era where no one had seen the likes of him before and like McDavid now he was much faster on his skates then 95% of the league.
A few corrections for the Gordie Howe portion of the video. Bobby Orr retired before Howe. Orr was in the hall of fame at the time Gordie Howe retired. Also, he didn't leave the NHL for the WHA, he retired for a couple years and then made a comeback in the WHA to play with his sons. It's impossible to know if he would have come back at all if the WHA didn't exist. Also, he wasn't quite the first player to crack 100 points in a season. Phil Esposito did it first, and then Howe was one of 2 other players to do it later that same season (Bobby Hull being the other).
Interesting breakdown, but a bit weird when you are boiling things down to adjusted point production to not use the best seasons from a decade with regards to point production. Like, sure Bobby Orr was the best of the 70's, but his adjusted points would be lower than Esposito's 152 point season. Same with the 2000's, where you choose Lidstrom who is a defensive specialist instead of using Crosby's 120 point season. I crunched the numbers and it only makes an adjusted point or two difference, but Gretzky's best season in points per game was actually the 205 he scored in 74 games in 1983-84. I appreciate the asterisks for the shortened seasons, but even so, that season from Crosby was so short it probably shouldn't have been used at all. Only 22 games is basically a streak. Gretzky had 66 points through the first 22 games in 1983-84, but that didn't mean he ended up with 240 points. I didn't disagree with any of the players you chose as the best for a decade, but it was kind of trying to combine 2 separate things into a single thing that just didn't quite fit, in my opinion. Overall still good, but could have been better.

Special mention to Guy Lafleur in the 70s. He won 3 art Ross and Lester B person in row from 75 to 78. But of course Bobby Orr was still the best of 70s because of what he did for a defenseman.

For his Era maybe. But of all time, no he isn't. Now the impact on hockey Gretzky is up for debate. Maurice Richard as icon tho is an entire category of his own. Kids would get the same hair cut and not just 1 or 2 the whole province and abroad as well.
Richard elevated his game in the playoffs. His playoff stats are perhaps the most impressive in his career. Rocket may be the most determined goal scorer of all time.

Maurice Richard had to protect himself by dropping the gloves and being chase by head hunters the whole game. Forsberg is glaringly absent from the conversation. Despite ranking ninth for points per game in NHL history, within an era marked by stringent defensive play and few goals, his remarkable achievements is unrecognized here. Notably, only Lemieux could rival his performance during that period.
Enjoyed your video, but factor in Orr's plus minus and you will understand why Orr is was and always will be the GREATEST! Not to ignore his toughness.
Correction for Crosby, that talentless hack only has two Hart trophies. Ovechkin is the best of that Era with 3 Hart trophies, 3 Ted Lindsay, 9 Rocket trophies, a conn Smyth and a Calder. Meaning he beat out Crosby in MVP voting 4 times to 2 (rookie and league) in head to head voting. He also has over 800 goals and on his way to the all-time record, doing it in an Era with some of the lowest scoring. That and he also is in running for the most hits all time. 3 cups for Crosby is great but Kane did it in less years in the same Era and only has 1 less Hart trophy. So not like Crosby was doing anything that others weren't and he is not even chasing any significant records. Really the only thing Crosby revolutionized about the game of hockey was complaining to the refs and media so much that they eventually gave in and removed high hits. He also caused the league to begin enforcing slashing after he hacked off Mehot's finger and didn't even get a MINOR PENALTY despite doing it in front of the ref. Now to save face and not appear like they are actively favoring Crosby the league is over correcting by calling slash anywhere near the hands. Crosby has more points but the fact it is close and the fact that Ovechkin's points are mostly goals and primary points in an Era that was supposed to be hard to score in, seems a lot more impressive than Crosby that benefits handsomely from secondary points. Either way McDavid is already head and shoulders above all others in the current Era and far better than Crosby ever was even without a ring.
Adjusted scoring does not find perspective. There is no equation that could adjust the eras fairly. If scoring through the years had the same balance, yes you could possibly get reasonably close. Scoring has not had the same balance through the years so adjusted stats make no sense at all. The 1970-71 season is probably the most glaring example of why adjusted stats don't work. When one specific team dominates scoring over a span of time, ( which we've only seen a few times in history) it throws everything off stats wise league wide which makes adjusted stats quite unfair. There are seasons where the difference in the highest scoring team and the lowest scoring team is less than 100 goals and some seasons where the difference is over 200 goals. Those seasons can't possibly be adjusted fairly against each other for any of the teams involved.
I pretty much agree with every player from each era there’s no debate on that, but what I didn’t like was when u would consider there achievements from other eras and include them in the argument for why there the goat, for example, Sidney Crosby is the best player of the 2010s, but when u say he’s the best player of the 2010s and say he won 3 cups it sounds like he won’t 3 cups int he 2010s which he didn’t, he won 2, if we’re saying the best player in a specific time frame then you have to only include what they did in that time frame, that would be my only critique
Great video, but to say as a fact that Lidstrom was the "most complete defenseman in NHL history" as a an agreed up on fact made me actually pause the video. Obviously an all time player/defenseman but there are arguments for other players I would put in there that stack up just as well as Lidstrom. For instance, Orr who was mentioned earlier in the video for some reason gets labeled as an "offensive defenceman" because of the staggering numbers with many people failing to realize when you go back and listen to his piers, he was equally as astute in his own zone.

One thing I should've emphasized is that 3.8 Goals scored per game, is a stat referencing a single team. Not total goals scored in that game. In the 80's it would've been 7.6 to 8 goals scored per game
Why did you use Gretzky’s 215 point season in 80 games? His best season was 1983/84, when he scored 205 points and 87 goals in only 74 games. Best GPG and PPG of all time. Better than Lemieux’s 160 points in 60 games. In fact, Gretzky scored 175 points in his first 60 games in 1983/84.
What's great about this GOAT crap is that it's a lot like The World's Oldest Human. Until they die. Then someone else gets to temporarily hold that title. Don't deal in superlatives. If you're a kid dealing in this, give it a few years and get some perspective. Things change.
How could you not mention the NY Islanders in the 70s, they didn't just win 4 cups, there 2nd season ,73-74 were they made it to the 3rd round of the playoffs, the next year 75-76 they come in second place and make it to round 3 and defenseman Denis Potvin is 2 points shy of a 100 point season and his older brother adds another 72 points as a defenceman, the next year they come in second place make the play offs and Potvin adds another 80 points,1977-1978 New York Islanders season was the 6th season for the franchise in the National Hockey League, and they have there team,Campbell Conference champions and Patrick Division champions and make the playoffs, Bryan Trottier 129 points Potvin 84 points and rookie of the year Mike Bossy scores 53 goals with 91 points and would score 50 goals a year for almost a decade,1978-79 season Campbell Conference champions and Patrick Division champions again, 358 goals ,Trottier 134 points , Bossy 126 and Potvin puts up 101 points, then for 4 seasons we win everything, 83-84 they win everything again but lose in the finals, the next year they make the playoffs 85-86 ,14 seasons wining records...1987-88 New York Islanders season Patrick Division champions, 15 seasons, I don't think any teams has put up those kind of number EVER in 15 straight seasons.1973-1988

Edit: also to be that guy with you. It’s a pet peeve of mine when people say something increased “exponentially” when it didn’t. That means something very specific but people often just use it to vaguely say “a lot”. He does this when he mentions the increase of scoring in the 1940’s but it hadn’t even doubled.
It’s a nitpick for sure, but I think one worth making because some things in life DO increase exponentially, so it’s important for people to understand the gravity of that term.

Rob, good video, but you are kind of missing the point. Gretzky isn't considered the best just bcause he scored alot of points. He's considered the best because he was so much better and got so many more points than everybody else at the time.
For example, last season McDavid was incredible, putting up a whooping 153 points, which is 20% more than #2 in the league: Draisaitl at 128 points.
Compare these with 3 different seasons from the 80's.
In the 82-83 season, #2 in the league points wise was Peter Stastny with 124 points, Gretzky #1 had 196 which is a 58% increase.
In the 83-84 season, Coffey was #2 with 126 points, Gretzky #1 had a 62% points increase at 205 points.
In the 86-87 season Kurri was #2 with 108 points and Gretzky #1 had a 70% points increase with 183 points.
These are Gretzky compared to the number 2 in points in the entire league. Gretzky, in the 80's, frequently scored between 40-60% more points than number 2 in the league, sometimes, like shown above it was even up to 70% higher. If McDavid had scored 70% more points than #2 in the league last season, he would have scored 217 points compared to Draisaitl's 128. But in his best season, McDavid just barely got 20% more in his best ever season. Usually it's been alot closer.
Don't get me wrong, I think that McDavid is one of the best ever, but if we compare players to their peers AT THE TIME, it's not even a close comparison whatsoever. And the only way you can compare players is between who they play against. If McDavid or Crosby had played in the 80's they would have been visibly worse players than we have seen them be in their primes because of worse equipment, training, workouts, nutrition etc.
The skill floor is higher today than it was in the past though.
For example, in 1922 the women’s high jump record was 1.46m. In 1986 the record was set at 2.08m. In the intervening period, there were about 55 different changes in that record.
The point I’m making, is that while Gretzky was undoubtedly a great player, that doesn’t make him the best player of all time. Was he ahead of his time in terms of skill? Absolutely. Was the skill gap between him and other players the widest during his playing days? Sure.
Do I think Crosby and McDavid could absolutely wipe the floor with him? You bet.
Also, I think it's impossible to put McDavid in the GOAT conversation given that he has never even won a single conference final game, much less won four cups like Gretzky.
@@benguin_ But it's not a fair comparison. Take any player from the 80's, not just Gretzky, you cannot compare them with players that play 40 years later. The players of today have access to better equipment, training, nutrition, health systems, protection, supplements, etc.
They have better support systems, it's a much cleaner sport and alot of the rules have changed. If you do a straight comparison with the players from 40 years ago with the ones playing today you are giving them a massive disadvantage that has nothing to do with how good or bad players they were.
If McDavid or Crosby had been born in the same year as Gretzky or Mike Bossy for example, they would have been visibly worse compared to his modern day counter part and they would have been alot more vulnerable. If you do a straight comparison, you're effectively disregarding the past 35-40 years of hockey and that's unfair to all of these players.

He had been retired from playing for a few years, even inducted into the HHOF, but when his sons got signed with the Houston Aeroes, he was convinced by the team to suit up and play with his sons. It's unlikely he would've ever played again after retiring in 1971 if not for his sons.

I know he was only playing for a short while but im surprised joe malone didn't come up in this video. According to his stats he was by far and beyond the best goal scorer for the seasons he played, even putting up 44 goals in 20 games.
Search him up, i think he scored 8 goals in a single game once.

Quick note at 1:17, it seems like simple math to multiply number of games x number of teams, but since every game counts as a game for 2 teams, there's actually only 1,312 games in an nhl season.

If you’re going to count both teams in one game played, then you would need to count both team’s goals-per-game. 2624*3 or 1312*6 is the same number. But “goals per game” is almost universally a per-team metric. So 2624 team-games played multiplied by goals per game, a per-team-game number, gives a goals total.

There are so many factors to the way the game is today compared to other decades, that you cant just use adjusted scoring to say so and so would get x points in 2023.

In my opinion, I think Mcdavid is the new GOAT. Don't get me wrong, Gretsky is unreal, and is 2nd place, but to play at the level Mcdavid does, with the current skill of the NHL is just unreal. Not even an oilers fan, but we should start giving him that.

The man had 4 Art Ross in a row in one of the lowest scoring eras, and still cracked 120 points 4 times during that era
Howe didn't leave the NHL for the WHA . He retired from the NHL and worked for the Wings for two years. Hull on the other hand scored 50 goals 71/72 and left the NHL to sign with the WHA , he might have been the highest goal scorer had he stayed .
This is why adjusted for era is one of my favorite stats.
Gretzky and Lemieux were awesome, of course, but factor in that there were many goalies that had above a 3.50 GAA(some even being over 4.00) and below .900 Sv%. This wasn't just a couple of goalies like that, most of them were like that. Only goalies like Roy were able to maintain lower GAA than that after the 1986-1987 season. This was also at a time when most (95% were Canadian players), once the league opened up to a lot of Russian and European talent, things drastically started to change. Better range of goalies, and players. Teams also started adopting new defensive strategies like the trap and clutch and grab. Also a huge one, there were a huge amount of newly formed teams back in the 70s/80s and 90s whom most of has really bad teams in general.
In the current era, the things that have changed is the removing of the 2 line pass, the trapezoid in place now, 3 vs 3 OT and the shootout. Those all came after the departure of Gretzky and Lemieux. However there is one rule change that would have made many of the dynasty teams impossible in today's game and that is the Salary cap. Also the game now lacks the bruiser 4th lines as well. How many goals were probably scored against many of the talentless goons, whom most of would not even crack an AHL team in this day and age. You can't really compare eras. It's not just about goal average, it also about rule changes, equipment, training etc,.

Consider this mind boggling record : Bobby Orr lead the NHL a record (6) times. His average Plus / Minus those (6) seasons was a +80. That's not a misprint, +80. During those (6) seasons Orr was (2) Scoring titles, came in runner up 3 more times & won the Norris Trophy all those seasons he lead the NHL in Plus Minus. A feat that will never ever be duplicated. Orr stands alone as the most dominant player of all time. Folks, you simply had to be there.

See Coffey was pretty much as good as Orr offensively, for sure. But then you factor in that Coffey didn't even hold a candle to Orr as a defenseman. Coffey for the most part wasn't that good in that position (even Ray Bourque who never had a 100 point season was better defensively), he would have been better as a forward. Orr revolutionized the way defense can be played and did so while being heads and shoulders above everyone else defensively. His +/- speaks volumes about this. And did no one mention that with modern equipment, Orr would have easily given McDavid a run for his money in speed. He was lightning quick when he played, and all while having bad knees.

Crosby, like Lindros, has always been a puck watcher. Concussions should never happen but when you skate with head down you are much more likely to have several concussions
Crosby > McDavid. Dude came into a team who didnt have a million number one picks and lost half of his prime to concussions, significabtly lowering his best seasons and overall totals. Not to mention, it was lower scoring than the last few seasons. I also think both are good leaders, but Crosby is a GREAT leader.
32 Teams play 82 games but 2 teams play in each game. It should be 82 x 16 = 1312 Games in a season.
Then multiply it by 6 goals per game, combined. But goals per game is always a per team metric, so there are 2624 team-games played.
There's not just one GOAT, there are several GOATS and arguments can me made for all of them.. I mean, Mario Lemieux and Wayne Gretzky have almost identical career PPG averages. Look, it's all subjective but it really comes down to preference and which style you prefer.

Couple things: Crosby has 2 Harts, not 3, the Rocket Richard wasn't awarded until 1999 and that Gretzky is the goat is far from unanimous; true, Orr didn't play long, but the things he did were so outstanding (you didn't even mention his absurd dominance in the +/- statistic) that many people still say he is the best ever. There are also many who will tell you Gordie Howe because he was more complete than Gretzky and like you mentioned, some people observed Lemieux's talent and think he had more of if than Gretzky.

I saw Lemieux play once - I even won the in rink 'contest' a Thrifty car rental 'move of the game' and got to sit at center ice 6 rows up from my nose bleeds. Lemieux was sick then but it was before his diagnosis so at the time we didn't know. He was horrible in that game - he just floated around shift after shift after shift. Until the last minute ....... down by a goal (this was before the OT era) he decided to play and scored two goals in the final minute of the game - pretty much doing it on his own too with no help from teammates. It's like the Jets (Game was in Wpg) were just standing around (they weren't). After the game I had told my buddy "Could you imagine the score if he played like that the whole game - what a lazy bum'. Again, unbeknownst to us that he was suffering with cancer at that time - something that would have grounded most of us never mind play a professional sport. Gretzky was the smartest player to ever live no doubt about it - but in terms of physicality and talent it's not even close Lemieux was best (I saw both play and no one dominated like Mario did when he was on his game). McDavid is easily 3rd given what he can do at full speed - Bobby Orr is 4th only because he played in a era where no one had seen the likes of him before and like McDavid now he was much faster on his skates then 95% of the league.

A few corrections for the Gordie Howe portion of the video. Bobby Orr retired before Howe. Orr was in the hall of fame at the time Gordie Howe retired. Also, he didn't leave the NHL for the WHA, he retired for a couple years and then made a comeback in the WHA to play with his sons. It's impossible to know if he would have come back at all if the WHA didn't exist. Also, he wasn't quite the first player to crack 100 points in a season. Phil Esposito did it first, and then Howe was one of 2 other players to do it later that same season (Bobby Hull being the other).
And Bobby Orr won 2 Stanley Cups, not 4.
Interesting breakdown, but a bit weird when you are boiling things down to adjusted point production to not use the best seasons from a decade with regards to point production. Like, sure Bobby Orr was the best of the 70's, but his adjusted points would be lower than Esposito's 152 point season. Same with the 2000's, where you choose Lidstrom who is a defensive specialist instead of using Crosby's 120 point season. I crunched the numbers and it only makes an adjusted point or two difference, but Gretzky's best season in points per game was actually the 205 he scored in 74 games in 1983-84. I appreciate the asterisks for the shortened seasons, but even so, that season from Crosby was so short it probably shouldn't have been used at all. Only 22 games is basically a streak. Gretzky had 66 points through the first 22 games in 1983-84, but that didn't mean he ended up with 240 points.
I didn't disagree with any of the players you chose as the best for a decade, but it was kind of trying to combine 2 separate things into a single thing that just didn't quite fit, in my opinion. Overall still good, but could have been better.

For his Era maybe. But of all time, no he isn't. Now the impact on hockey Gretzky is up for debate. Maurice Richard as icon tho is an entire category of his own. Kids would get the same hair cut and not just 1 or 2 the whole province and abroad as well.
Richard elevated his game in the playoffs. His playoff stats are perhaps the most impressive in his career.
Rocket may be the most determined goal scorer of all time.

Maurice Richard had to protect himself by dropping the gloves and being chase by head hunters the whole game. Correction for Crosby, that talentless hack only has two Hart trophies.
Ovechkin is the best of that Era with 3 Hart trophies, 3 Ted Lindsay, 9 Rocket trophies, a conn Smyth and a Calder. Meaning he beat out Crosby in MVP voting 4 times to 2 (rookie and league) in head to head voting. He also has over 800 goals and on his way to the all-time record, doing it in an Era with some of the lowest scoring. That and he also is in running for the most hits all time.
3 cups for Crosby is great but Kane did it in less years in the same Era and only has 1 less Hart trophy. So not like Crosby was doing anything that others weren't and he is not even chasing any significant records.
Really the only thing Crosby revolutionized about the game of hockey was complaining to the refs and media so much that they eventually gave in and removed high hits. He also caused the league to begin enforcing slashing after he hacked off Mehot's finger and didn't even get a MINOR PENALTY despite doing it in front of the ref. Now to save face and not appear like they are actively favoring Crosby the league is over correcting by calling slash anywhere near the hands.
Crosby has more points but the fact it is close and the fact that Ovechkin's points are mostly goals and primary points in an Era that was supposed to be hard to score in, seems a lot more impressive than Crosby that benefits handsomely from secondary points.
Either way McDavid is already head and shoulders above all others in the current Era and far better than Crosby ever was even without a ring.
Adjusted scoring does not find perspective. There is no equation that could adjust the eras fairly. If scoring through the years had the same balance, yes you could possibly get reasonably close. Scoring has not had the same balance through the years so adjusted stats make no sense at all. The 1970-71 season is probably the most glaring example of why adjusted stats don't work. When one specific team dominates scoring over a span of time, ( which we've only seen a few times in history) it throws everything off stats wise league wide which makes adjusted stats quite unfair. There are seasons where the difference in the highest scoring team and the lowest scoring team is less than 100 goals and some seasons where the difference is over 200 goals. Those seasons can't possibly be adjusted fairly against each other for any of the teams involved.
I pretty much agree with every player from each era there’s no debate on that, but what I didn’t like was when u would consider there achievements from other eras and include them in the argument for why there the goat, for example, Sidney Crosby is the best player of the 2010s, but when u say he’s the best player of the 2010s and say he won 3 cups it sounds like he won’t 3 cups int he 2010s which he didn’t, he won 2, if we’re saying the best player in a specific time frame then you have to only include what they did in that time frame, that would be my only critique

Great video, but to say as a fact that Lidstrom was the "most complete defenseman in NHL history" as a an agreed up on fact made me actually pause the video. Obviously an all time player/defenseman but there are arguments for other players I would put in there that stack up just as well as Lidstrom. For instance, Orr who was mentioned earlier in the video for some reason gets labeled as an "offensive defenceman" because of the staggering numbers with many people failing to realize when you go back and listen to his piers, he was equally as astute in his own zone.

One thing I should've emphasized is that 3.8 Goals scored per game, is a stat referencing a single team. Not total goals scored in that game. In the 80's it would've been 7.6 to 8 goals scored per game
Why did you use Gretzky’s 215 point season in 80 games? His best season was 1983/84, when he scored 205 points and 87 goals in only 74 games. Best GPG and PPG of all time. Better than Lemieux’s 160 points in 60 games. In fact, Gretzky scored 175 points in his first 60 games in 1983/84.

How could you not mention the NY Islanders in the 70s, they didn't just win 4 cups, there 2nd season ,73-74 were they made it to the 3rd round of the playoffs, the next year 75-76 they come in second place and make it to round 3 and defenseman Denis Potvin is 2 points shy of a 100 point season and his older brother adds another 72 points as a defenceman, the next year they come in second place make the play offs and Potvin adds another 80 points,1977-1978 New York Islanders season was the 6th season for the franchise in the National Hockey League, and they have there team,Campbell Conference champions and Patrick Division champions and make the playoffs, Bryan Trottier 129 points Potvin 84 points and rookie of the year Mike Bossy scores 53 goals with 91 points and would score 50 goals a year for almost a decade,1978-79 season Campbell Conference champions and Patrick Division champions again, 358 goals ,Trottier 134 points , Bossy 126 and Potvin puts up 101 points, then for 4 seasons we win everything, 83-84 they win everything again but lose in the finals, the next year they make the playoffs 85-86 ,14 seasons wining records...1987-88 New York Islanders season Patrick Division champions, 15 seasons, I don't think any teams has put up those kind of number EVER in 15 straight seasons.1973-1988
