Lawrence Tibbett sings the prologue to Leoncavallo's "Pagliacci." This is from the February 1, 1941 Metropolitan Opera broadcast with Ferruccio Calusio conducting. Other cast members included Norina Greco (Nedda), Giovanni Martinelli (Canio), Frank Valentino (Silvio), and Alessio De Paolis (Beppe).
I never heard any singer, baritone or otherwise, whose voice was so filled with emotion and feeling. An amazing performer. I wish I could have heard him in person.
Love Tibbett singing anything. Not only a great voice, but always he gets into the character totally. Sings Road to Mandolay with a Cornish accent. And in "My little mule wagon" he makes me even see the dust.
Elios, grazie per la tua interessante analisi. Tibbett era un cantante magnifico. Riposa in pace, Lawrence Tibbett.
Ma questo era un gigante! Immortale.
I've said it before. Tibett was the greatest among the great American baritones.
Grandissimo
Listen to Nicolae Herlea singing it. Best ever!
wooooooooooooooooaw que genial Lawrence. Por que ahora ya no cantan asi me pregunto...
L’uragano Tibbett.
Immenso.
Unico .

Меня поразил его голос в самое сердце
Tibbett covers much more here than in his famous (early) studio recording. His "lifestyle" issues apart, had he covered his voice throughout his career (like Robert Merrill) instead of too often singing "all out" in the style of Titta Ruffo, he might've avoided his vocal problems.
That and he was a smoker.
Qui dimostra una grande tecnica, peccato che è l'ultima registrazione bella che abbiamo di lui... comunque meraviglioso, non c'è nessuno che possa cantare così quest'aria, con fiati lunghi e potenti
Agree. None of those greats looked after themselves. The trouble is, I can't get past Bastianini for this.
@@puccini4530 Agreed...but there is then Warren...not too shabby!

All these comments about "covering". Horsehockey. Pavarotti began his career "covering" f's. Smoking and drinking aside ...so did Caruso, btw. Singers, who employ the lowered laryngeal technique, think Del Monaco, will tend to turn earlier in the passaggio. Today, singers employ a raised larynx and nasal technique. Awful and ugly, in my humble opinion. This is a prime example of a stupendous singer. Just enjoy it.
