- He's a warrior who bravely defended the Azovstal Steel Plant during the intense Russian siege in Mariupol. This iconic plant, dating back to 1930, was one of Ukraine's largest steel rolling companies and known for its incredible defenses - it was even designed to withstand a nuclear attack!
As the Russian forces closed in on Mariupol, Ukrainian fighters retreated to Azovstal, turning it into their last bastion of resistance. The Battle of Azovstal raged on for over 80 days until May 16, 2022, around 2,000 Ukrainian defenders surrendered, many wounded, and 200-400 sadly lost.
These defenders are hailed as true heroes in Ukraine, reshaping the war's course by holding Russian forces at bay for weeks in the battle for Mariupol.
Gosha, our courageous friend, was injured on May 4, 2022, when a mine exploded nearby, causing shrapnel injuries across his body. Unfortunately, Gosha's wartime journey didn't end there. In order to reduce the toll on the besieged Ukrainians, the country's military command ordered the troops to put down their arms and surrender. Gosha then endured being a Russian POW for a month and a half in their captivity.
But here's the good news! Our incredible upper-extremity specialists, Michelle I. and Jamie V., are working tirelessly to help Gosha regain his independence!
