- Blume is known for writing groundbreaking books for and about adolescents and now she is writing a novel about her own youth. Rita Braver reports on the renowned author who says she has always been drawn towards taboo subjects.
Judy Blume was there to have that conversation about first periods that my super uptight Catholic Mom, sisters, and friends weren’t willing to have. I was able to navigate those troubling waters because of Are You There God, It’s Me, Margaret, among other things. Mom was among those mothers in the 80s who wanted to ban Judy Blume books after she found a copy of Forever in my purse. It was being passed around my friend group. My Mom told me that she was disgusted and appalled at the contents of the book, and that she had read the entire thing. It’s funny how much my Mom couldn’t handle those conversations, and she also didn’t want anyone else having those conversations with her kids. I really would have had a much more difficult time and felt so alone without Judy Blume and her books. Thank you Judy Blume!
My mom thought she was fantastic and encouraged me to read her. So sorry you were raised in such a damaging fundamentalist home :(
She is such an inspiration. Her books made me feel like I wasn't alone in elementary school. Hoping to have a career like her someday!
^^
Instablaster.
Her book "it's not the end of the world"
Got me through my elementary years. I owe Judy Blume A LOT
I love that one, I couldn't really relate but I remember tiny events still to this day from all of her books, like in that one she and Val take a bubble bath and talk about shaving, her little sister only eats cereal, etc.
Judy Blume is awesome. I remember in middle school at reading class we read some of her books.
I’ve been listening to her books again on audio and man, she’s legit S tier
I've been reading Judy Blume since I was in the second grade. Possibly a little early for some children, but not me. I've always wanted to meet her and I think I'm going to write her a letter.
My personal favorites are Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, Superfudge, Fudge-A-Mania, and Double Fudge.
Same here
Back in middle school, Judy Blume's books had a reputation for risque and seductive, always with some sex or foreplay described like no other kids books in the library. Honestly, the kids would whisper and giggle all over that as I recall. I remember once a friend showed me a passage about two kids about to have sex, and the girl smelling his privates and then this whole description about her wanting to put cologne on his testicles. This was signature Blume. Kids would always search thru the pages for the sex scenes at the end. She was the only author known to include explicit descriptions of fondling, sex, and foreplay in graphic detail in the whole school collection.
Favorite author her books helped me in more ways than one loveeee you JB
reading “are you there” in sixth grade made me a gentler man i swear to jeebus.
Happy 80th Birthday Judy Blume
Awwww I LOVE your book DOUBLE FUDGE
I was half way reading her book "Unlikely Event", (which is a great book btw). Thanks for the spoiler, CBS. Now I know what happened before I could finish it...
Sadly, I found out about my “cycle” through Judy Blume
whats up with the news lady's voice
She always talks like that😮
‘Newscaster voice’ used to be the common speech pattern on most news stories from 60’s to mid 90’s and then it started to fade somewhat
That's Rita Braver. She is an intelligent, lovely person.
Gross.
