The diaphragm in the switch panel has likely developed a leak. It can be patched for a temporary fix.

How to sew in reverse
Button on the bottom right of the machine, under the ELNA logo. Press with your thumb to the right whilst the machine is running. It will reverse sew.

Sounds like the capacitor has failed and needs replacing.
