- Everyone has an opinion on how reloads should be handled when running a carbine. Some of those are based on theory and others based on experience. Here is the viewpoint from someone that has the experience.

I've had the privilege of taking two of his classes in Norcal. Bob is the best teacher i have had. Experience is great and he teaches all the basics just faster. And if you think he is slow, your dead wrong. Dude has one of the fastest draws on target and triggee fingers ive ever seen. Can't wait to see him again in a few months
We are fortunate Bob lives a few hours away and has come to my place seven or maybe eight times. Always a great time. He's coming back Feb 10th... can't wait.
I like this guy's teaching style. Really don't why everyone is complaining... he's been there and done that... he doesn't autistically ramble about his .87 second tac reloads COD style. He gives genuine advice from real world experience and seems like a laid back dude.
Gotta love the feedback we are seeing here and on Facebook over this video. Especially the stuff from those that talk about battlefields and combat but never saw either first person. Then there are those that don’t like the method of info delivery. Yep, that is something to complain about. Like telling the drill instructor to stop yelling. Some don’t bother to stop and wonder if this guy may actually have been there and done that many, many times over. Or that maybe due to his current job status cannot mention or refer to his background. So many jumping the gun instead of considering the fact that maybe… just maybe they just got a nugget of knowledge from someone that had bullets flying past him a time or two or ten. But hey, you can always go back to your safe spot debating what you read on the blogs and which new mag flip is being taught.
No is questioning his experience, they are criticizing his inability to effectively teach. He sounds like a random Joe you found at the range and ask him to make shit up as he goes about reloads.
If he was a well known instructor with a huge fan base on social media, the kind where half the Tactical Twinkies are asking what underwear he wears, this would all be okay. This guy is new on the scene with a legitimate background. Given that background and experience and having watched the full training course, we know better and so will the viewers of his content.
I have gotten some of the best instruction the military has to offer, I have also taken that experience into combat with me on 3 year long deployment. I don't doubt this guy may know his stuff but if I was a paying student and he was talking like this in class I would ask for my money back. It's not if you know what your doing it's if you can articulate that to students to pass the knowledge on. I think that's were the discrepancy is.
I guess he does/did something right if he got that old and survived all the years of active combat situations especially with SF missions. If you receive active fire, the last thing one will think about is to retain and bag that (half-)empty magazine. He is absolutely right ... survival first, logistics later.
But I tend to think that what some instructors forget to share with the audience is to exactly describe each scenario in which that specific skill needs to happen.
He talks like a guy that hopes his audience has a remote clue. If you don't then whine away
Rob Keller is a highly experienced Delta operator with multiple deployments all over the world. So unless any of you haters have more training and real world experience than a Delta Force operator shut up and listen to what he has to say.

Sry but this is as common sense as it gets. I don't care what they've done it's clear that in a real gunfight this is what would be done and not messing around with the other mag.. Where so many things happen in very little time.
I guess ill chime in right quick not that anyone gives a piss, as a former NCO I can understand the attiude, he's not being arrogant he's just fed up with the bull crap all these tacticool guys have been teaching for a while now. When I trained I dropped my mag and kept my weapon down range just like he showed I thought it just made since. If your gonna train for combat just keep it simple.

I don't know why people are complaining about his teaching. Everyone teaches differently. Some people have taken courses on Speech and Lectures, and others have taken voice lessons, yadda yadda yadda. Whatever the case me be, not everyones the same. That being said, I like this guys straight forward approach. He's not reading off a que card or memorised lines,- he's relaying information to you. He's talking to the camera like an experienced vet. None of my instructors were as loud, boisterous, and articulate as some of the shooting Celebs that are out there and I couldn't care less. I want their Knowledge, and I want them to make sure I absorb it. He addresses you like he would anyone else under his tutelage.

You don’t have to have que cards or memories lines. But his style, and his attitude and his mannerisms aren’t too good. Yes, knowing what you’re teaching is important, and he obviously knows what he’s talking about, but the ability to teach and communicate is arguably more important. If you can’t teach properly, or you can’t communicate properly you can seem like you don’t know what you’re talking about, you can confuse people, you can come off the wrong way, mislead your audience etc
Read an article on Keller, then went to UA-cam and this was the first video I saw. As an army Vet, I took no offense whatsoever and immediately took his advice. I've watched several videos since and came back here to read the comments... GOODNIGHT! Get over it all you cry baby wanna be tough guys! Keller is Da Man! Listen to him. He knows better than YOU!
I think all posting here need to check out who Bob is and what his background is. He didn't say this based on lack of real world, close combat experience. If you do not have similar experience(s) , you should at least hear him out...
handguncombatives when wise people speak real truth it's usually a hard pill to swallow for the blind followers and the general masses. Most people would rather hear comforting lies than inconvenient truths.
Problem is people with as much REAL WORLD experience teach different things. Also this guy comes off as a complete douche which doesn't help him trying to make his point. Tactical reloading where you retain your half empty magazine is practiced my many people with REAL WORLD experience. Don't see why this guy's opinion would change that.

I watched his Profile of Courage video and this reload video. His emphasis on basics is very important. Casting my ego aside and looking at what he is doing, one can apply this to various situations. I personally liked it.

Damn man, I love when solid ass people put out no nonsense, no bullshit training methods...it's been 2 years since I got out of the Army, and I find myself training alone because it's pretty frustrating going to public training classes where guys are expecting everyone to be John Wick or some shit...I really appreciate instructors like you and Sean from Vigilance Elite, good shit.
Flawless resume by anyone's standards. His tone makes me feel like I'm wasting his time watching the video. If you're going to be an operator - be an operator. If you're going to be a teacher - be a teacher. Embrace your role and have fun doing it. He looks like he's not stoked about what he's doing. I can imagine he rather would be out on missions again. He'd get better results by embracing his new position and being excited about teaching. The fact that he was an operator should mean he'd be able to accept constructive criticism.

Mr. Keller has seen the "Elephant". Listen to what he is saying, keep your weapon up on target as much as possible, situational awareness ! If you have re-loaded from behind hard cover and rds. aren't coming at you, then pick up your partial mag. If the fight continues, don't sweat it, you just topped off your weapon, your'e good to go.
3 Gun, IPSIC and IDPA are Gun Games on a one way range, all bets are off when the SHTF.

In answer to your question about where the retention of a mag came from. Great vid by the way! HAHAHAHA i love everything that Panteo puts out, great info from many different sources!!! But anyways, it came from the competitive people in the early 90's. Like this man says, its all about basics!!

Good thing they ditched Travis Haley. This guy is an excellent teacher, very clear, effective and professional.
I like this technique for the shear reason that it reduces the amount of proverbial tools I have to contain in my mental toolbox of tactics. If I have to make a decision between two or more actions in the heat of the moment, it slows me down. Therefore, it is good to have one reload style for all situations.

I would like to hear your opinion on the future staying power of the 5.56 caliber. A lot of people say that it is not powerful enough past 500 yards, but I think most fighting happens a lot closer. I believe that a lot of the shooting techniques that have been developed for QCB, shooting under and around vehicles, will not work well with a more powerful cartridge. They are harder with 7.62x39. For this reason I think 5.56 is here to stay. I would like to hear your thoughts on this.

I dont disagree with what is being said in the Video. it all makes perfect sense to me :)
But i have a question, what if the Magazine hits a hard surface(concrete or tiles etc.) and you loose valuable bullets because you didnt take that extra 2secs to do a tac reload? Is dropping the Mag every time really the only way?

I’m always told that you need to maintain mags during a fight by NCOs and peers and I argue back that who cares about the mag and am told you may need it down the road. Is this good long term thinking or just a METC kind of thing. Does anyone have some thoughts to this?
avery kerley in a gunfight you don’t worry about policing mags I can assure you. The only mag ur worried about is the next one that has more bullets in it.
Regular army guys stranded at some outpost in the mountains aren't going to be getting too many replacement mags so I could see them wanting to retain them.

Man, I couldn't agree more. When you hear the baby's cry, "feed the baby!" Same goes for malfunctions....immediate action! I've practiced the mind-set, as much as the physical steps of reloading my rifle numerous times, consistent with Bob's philosophy. I can tell he believes in "flow,".....mindless response. I'd hate to have to abandon good ammo in a hot-zone, but what's on-board is the immediate, and sometimes only option, for staying alive. Feed that baby! I've tried to incorporate a variety of scenarios/what-ifs to stay, adequately, plugged-into the confrontation. In one scenario, I will assume that I am under attack, having dropped a partial-mag on the ground for a re-load. In lieu of turning my back on it, during my haste to seek nearby cover, I attempt to kick/scoot that mag in the direction I'll be traveling for cover, at least, to get it closer to my next fighting-position, if possible. Since, you don't have the luxury of picking what type of surface you'll be fighting on, it brings expectation and improvisation into the practice-theater. We're all looking for our own bag-o'-tricks, but "simplicity" is his stock-in-trade and that means avoiding complexity. "Style" goes out the door; doesn't have to be pretty, just functional. No cameras to judge you in the real-world. His is not a story-book style instruction.

About time some one said it. A little late, but the only time you should do a “mag retention tactical reload” is if your no shit, somewhere with security and cover. In a real gun fight/fire fight...the last thing you should be worrying about is mag retention. Speed reload that bitch, keep the rifle down range, and if time permits...pick up your mag...other then that, worry about the god damn threat and keeping your buddy’s alive.
So you've got time to bend down and pick up a partial magazine and replace it in your kit but not to to move your now full hand back to your kit after a 'tactical reload'?

I agreed with everything he said. There is no reason for a “tactical reload”. I’ve heard guys say that tactical reloads are for when you want to be stealthy. Stealth is out the window when you start putting rounds down range. Tactical reloads only create confusion about your ammo status when you’re in a gunfight. They are just nonsense.

Find the new mag with your off-hand before you hit that mag release. Your spare mag might be in your gun already and you don't remember having reloaded earlier, or you yard sale'd your spare mag somewhere along the way. In either case, verifying that you have a fresh mag to replace the one in the gun before you ditch the old one, is important.
no way man I'm partial to dropping a working mag and just figuring the rest out after. a rifle fight isn't exciting enough, i want to spontaneously unload my rifle
When you do a "tactical" reload it's because you are behind cover or relatively out of immediate danger, otherwise you would just do a regular reload.

If you play airsoft you have to toss the empty mag in your dump pouch or else people steal your mags. Great video here, I love to learn from the pros.
I am an old fart from the late 70s and 80s. All I know is it the target is shooting at me I will find at the very minimum concealment during the period of time I cannot fire back. I know I have been shot at and my instinct is to get as close to prone as I can. Of course we never had kevlar or plates to catch the bullets for us. Just a thin layer of skin.

Just saw the Warfighter segment and had to see what the fuss was about. You mean that when you are in a fire fight and behind cover and want to make sure your mag is full YOU DONT WORRY ABOUT SAVING THE ROUNDS IN MAG YOU DROP. Come on don't you count every shot in firefight like all those "operators" you must not be that good and I can't trust u to Train people. LOL
He's saying if you're in a fire fight you don't take your eyes of the fucking threat shooting at you to change mag and this is the best way to do it.

why would you dump ammo on the ground just to pick it up later? or having to leave it if a threat pops up? now youre out ammo. its a lot quicker, and less effort, to do a "combat reload" than it is to dump a mag with ammo on the ground to pick it up.
If you ask real nicely maybe Bob will explain it just for you again even though he answered that exact question in the video.

So, I have been in a few gunfights, deployed a bunch of times and taught literally thousands of dudes tactical skills for deployment so I guess I can share my opinion according to the above statement.
The instructor's speech patterns and teaching style are not conducive to student attention and knowledge assimilation. Through constant feedback from fellow instructors, speech patterns, tone and body language are hone to increase the students interest in the subject. This is a mark of a high quality instructor. This guy lacks this.
Subject Matter Expertise. The gentlemen, while I am sure he is a good dude, is confusing a speed reload with a tactical reload. No, I don't mean an emergency reload.
I am a fan of Panteao Productions and will continue to purchase DVDs and training videos but not this one.

Bro if we are in the swamp we just lost 15 maybe 20 rounds of valuable ammunition. That technique came from field operations in conditions that would render a dropped mag inoperable. If there is enough time to do a TAC reload there is enough time to hold it in your hand. 30 mins of practice and you can be super fast at it in one afternoon on the range. Real life doesn't happen on the gravel or grass flat range.
I really like this guy, but it's just his opinion on tac mag changes. There are guys with as much combat experience who think that dropping your mag is unnecessary. I like Bob Keller's approach, and despite his experience, it doesn't mean that everything he does is best for everyone. Alot of ass kissing here.

Wait, I thought we moved during gun fights....does this guy have a video game hack for unlimited mags and ammo? What's even worse is the civilians watching this, who probably aren't carrying 6+1 are now going to drop mags because they saw Jean Claude Van Damme do it on a UA-cam video. I mean, there has never been any documented incidents of guys running out of ammo and mags during an engagement and just getting ammo dropped to them. Never.....how about keeping your eyes up while putting that mag in your dump pouch? Impossible I guess....I mean, you said in the beginning super speedy reloads aren't that important on the battlefield, right? So take the extra second to toss that partial in your mag sack. And before you ask I'm at level 40 on CoD Ghosts so I have real work experience. Come talk to me when you have to perform a mag change with Cheetos dust all over your finger tips! Talk about being in the shit.....

I agree with him. If you are in a gunfight there is no place for a "tactical reload". You should get the gun back into action as quick as possible. It only takes but a second to grab your half-spent magazine off the deck if you decide you have a second to do that. If it is empty there is NO REASON AT ALL to pick it up. Leave the goddamn thing there. Yes he does sound like he just ate a monstrous meal he is trying not to burp up, but judge the content... who gives a fuck about the delivery. Sweaty 300lb keyboard warriors over here. smh

so now that i've dropped my mag in the dirt, i have one of two options. bend over and pick it up, taking 3 times longer than doing a standard tac reload that all the "tacticool" guys are doing, or leave my mag laying there when the fight picks back up. this guy is a genius. travis haley could learn from this guy. wow. i dont care what his "job title" is, if youre gonna throw bad advice out there on your channel dont try and make excuses for it.
Never heard of this guy before, but just went to your site and read his bio:
"Robert has spent more than 19 years with the United States Army, which all 19 years have been spent in the Special Operations community." Well, I might have just been a Tanker while I was in, but last I checked that's not quite possible. I mean, even to qualify for RASP you have to complete your first full tour (enlistment).

For new soldiers, RASP is conducted after applicants successfully complete their basic Military Occupational Specialty course and graduate from the Army’s Parachutists Course (Airborne School). For soldiers, both enlisted and officer, who have successfully completed their first tour of duty, and meet the recruiting qualifications, a RASP date will be scheduled upon application and conditional acceptance to the 75th Ranger Regiment.
If I have to question someones bio from something so simple, I am going to have to question everything else about their "experience"
Now, as far as his reload, nothing wrong with it, just a different way to do the same thing. There is more then one way to skin a cat.
One of my best friends was a tanker in Iraq. He's told me stories of sleeping on an M1 Abhrams.
That said, EVERYTHING about this guy screams "fake" to me. From that goofy ass 27 foot rail his weapon is wearing, to that even goofier grip (left, overhand) is really "Hollywood."

So, your second paragraph references two different things: the first sentence refers to "new soldiers" with an Option 40 enlistment contract. This streamlines them straight to RASP out of OSUT and Airborne. The second paragraph refers to "soldiers" already in the army who want to leave a current unit they're in and go to Regiment. Mr. Keller's bio sounds to me like he obtained an Option 40 on his enlistment. Just like there's the 18X contract, there's Option 40. A first full tour is not necessary.

+Joe Gumble ... Is entirely correct. My son has an option 40 contract, and went from graduation at Soldier Field to airborne school (Bravo Co. 507th) in about 15 minutes! When he graduates airborne school on 14 October he will pull CQ for two or three days and then go directly to RASP.
As to dropping your magazine to the ground for a default setting... No thanks, I'll continue to train to retain. This does not mean I won't let a mag hit the ground if it's necessary.

What?? Why would we not train endlessly on magazine changes?? I thought I had them down-pat, and I went to a nice airsoft event with my buddy, there were times when I was under pressure and I was fumbling my reloads.... even though I have practiced them MANY times.
Also, there is a very real need to preserve your rounds in many situations. The thing is, if you have 10 rounds in your gun, doing a proper tac reload will maintain that there is only a split second that your gun has only one round in it... and your fresh mag is literally a couple inches away - vs the method he recommends: He drops his mag, leaving him with only one round for the entire time it will take him to move his hand down to his belt to grab a fresh mag, move it all the way back up, and then finally fit it into the mag well.... what if he can't do that quickly for any reason? He'd be stuck with one round when he could have had 10.
Especially if you are moving, under pressure, or god forbid being shot at... its a much better idea to keep your partially filled mag inside the gun until you already have the next one right there and ready to replace it....

Ive trained and had many learning experiences with many types of people and my favorite teachers are actually competetive shooters aka 3 gunners, uspsa etc. People who kick my ass up and down the range. However your opinion is based on running around with toys against teenagers and kids, your opinion is the very definition of disingenuous. Put the toys down and pick up some real guns than maybe you can sit at the big boy table.
