    It's great to be subscribed to your channel. The Bikepacking and touring friternity is surely growing steadily here in SA. Thanks for sharing your experiences. This was a lovely video to watch. 🎉💯 😎

      @Bikepacking_sa..... thanks Tony and great to meet you online. What is the best platform for all us guys to connect here in SA? Still early days, but yes, we are growing in number and SA has much to offer.

    I used to be a tour guide in the eastern freestate, you are spot on about the government and our recreational area. Putting weddings first.

    Very cool to meet fellow riders!! And we’ll done on speaking to them!!

    • @richardhunt3051
      @richardhunt3051  Місяць тому +1

      @JC-kh1ut yes, during 5 months I saw 3 bikepackers doing a 4 day ride and 1 bikepacker doing a 5 week ride, so it's not common in SA to see other riders, as it is overseas.

    So inspiring...Average travel per day?

    • @richardhunt3051
      @richardhunt3051  Місяць тому

      @PeetBoshoff can be from 25km to 155 kms, depending on many conditions. It's not about the distance, but about the experience. Very rough is 8km/hr and easy is 25km/hr. When you choose back roads It's most probably going to be slow. You can stop and speak to people for an hour or more, and spend the rest of the day with them on their farms...so there is less distance covered. It's not a race, but a journey of discovery :))))

    Awesome to find this channel. I am planning to ride from Jhb down to capetown via the eastern cape, about 2200km. How do you find safety on the roads?

    • @richardhunt3051
      @richardhunt3051  Місяць тому +1

      @Dremansworld So far I have mainly kept to small towns and farming areas. The problem is in the large urban areas/cities and best to avoid them, or be extra wise, careful and alert. The N Cape is very safe and the people there are different to the other provinces in SA. Maybe stay away from parts of the E Cape and go thro the lower Karoo. I normally cycle back...gravel roads where possible.

    • @Dremansworld
      @Dremansworld Місяць тому +1

      @@richardhunt3051 thanks. The plan is small towns and gravel. To go places you don't on normal travels.

    I was wondering what that farmer was spraying the field with?

    • @richardhunt3051
      @richardhunt3051  Місяць тому

      @mbrylewski ..... It's better to spray the ground for weeds before planting the crop, than spraying the crop itself. The only vegetable or food you will ever get without some form of spraying, will be the food from your own backyard, so that's a great incentive to grow your own food. Most cosmetics you buy these days have sulphite etc in them, therefore also better to make your own cosmetics. Most town water is full of chemicals, so even better to drill your own borehole, that's if it's far enough from the septic tank :)))

      @richardhunt3051 point taken but.....

    I'm interested in your security measures with the bike when you shop?

    • @richardhunt3051
      @richardhunt3051  Місяць тому

      @ronels1216 there is not one method for bike security while shopping. Every time is different. I do not leave anything loose that can be snatched off the bike. Some shops I leave the bike inside next to the security guard. Sometimes I leave the bike with someone maybe in an office or other place I can trust and walk a short distance to the shop. Sometimes I chain it to something near the door....I put on a vibration alarm and if anyone touches the bike the alarm will go off....of course the crooks see me do that and are afraid to touch the bike. Every shop has a security guard these days and they are there to help you. Most small towns in the NCape and Karoo, everyone leaves there bikes outside the door and they don't get stolen, but I still put on my vibration alarm and chain it. Just be wise!!!!

    with regards to those idiots who show no regard for anyone by playing their music so loud and throwing rubbish all over the place, this is the norm with our brothers and sister who are now running this country into the ground unfortunately.
