  • I'm back after a short hiatus!
My regular schedule had to readjust around two full-time working schedules but we're back on track and bringing you Irish Customs and Folklore around Weddings. Well, some customs and traditions... Honestly, there are a whole lot more and maybe a part 2 video there somewhere if there's enough interest?
We are getting married in September so I've been researching a lot of old customs via the National School's Collection on www.duchas.ie as well as looking into the misconceptions around hand-fasting ceremonies.

So THAT’S where Wicca got the “year and a day’ protocol! Also congratulations on your engagement!!!!! Good luck with your wedding planning!!!

Go raibh maith agat 😊 and yeah, Wicca (and NeoPaganism in general) took a lot from Irish and other indigenous spiritual traditions. The more you know!

Interesting points thank you! In my family we always did ‘warming of the rings’ passing the bride and grooms rings to all the guests so the guests can bless the rings before the wedding ceremony.

Oh lovely! We passed around the crios before it was used in the hand-fasting in the same way

I would really love to see a “new house” customs video similar to this one!: :)

@@TheCraftyCailleach my pleasure! It’s entirely selfish tbh, we’re hoping to close on a house soon!

I'm talking to my partner about kinda re-mixing the handfasting element. I'm finger loop braiding our cord, and we want to do a private handfasting before the wedding, at the legal wedding, and then add a knot on our anniversary. I should make it pretty long!

Also, Joe Plunkett tried to get Grace Gifford to marry him in the last week of lent ("I'm gonna be a bit busy on Easter Sunday, love..."), but having lost the support of her family due to her conversion to Catholicism, Grace wasn't about to pick one of the unluckiest and most disrespectful times in the Catholic calendar to get hitched....and so the famous wedding before the firing squad happened on the 3rd May instead.

I did not know this, thank you for sharing. Love it! Such a lovely, albeit tragic song, we got from that too

You had to mention the song and now I'm bawling 😆

Thank you for another terrific video. Our wedding was very casual and humanist, as you said. Our best person insisted I do the "something borrowed, ..." thing and she supplied all 4. The "new" item was a beautiful "Remember the Women of the Rising" pin. I assembled my own bouquet from my herb garden.

Omg I love that so much, the pin sounds lovely as does the handmade DIY bouquet from the herbs garden 😍
