You cannot win with just throwables but even though the life bar dissappears after you go down the ladder and she appears to not take damage, she still is taking damage and only requires a few hits from your weapon once you empty your throwables. The life bar shows up as you go in to approach her after emptying the throwables.

    Nice video! I will push back slightly on the whole Player A Player B thing, though.
    Lies of P is the rare Soulslike that makes using everything at your disposal _actually_ feel great, but the caveat is... "Everything at your disposal" actually _includes_ learning to fight, deflect, dodge and guard appropriately with your weapon. I think this game really shines when you mix in potent supplementary options into your base combat-flow.
    It'll definitely also "check" players in those moments where there's no option to summon anything. "Elite" / Miniboss enemies, Door Guardian, Corrupted Parade Master and of course Nameless Puppet, but if the more cunning player was _genuinely_ paying attention to all the game's systems, they should have the presence-of-mind to come up with solutions to those situations as well. What that player _should_ be learning the entire time is that there's always a way forward, even if it takes extra work and patience, or further creativity.
    Nameless Puppet is really the final test of all this. Did you learn how to fight? And, if your combat ability isn't as high as someone who's been training all game, have you been Exploring enough to unlock critical items, and have you practiced _using_ those items at the appropriate times? Do you know their functions well enough that you can activate and get value out of them without getting killed? For Nameless Puppet in particular, two examples would be the two Guard Grindstones. (Bear in mind, the game is also very generous with re-specs.)
    That's also a type of Learning, which a certain kind of player tends to ignore when they could be having a sicker time if they engaged with everything.
    That to me is the beauty of this game. It supports more playstyles than people expect going in, and that applies to all kinds of players with all kinds of biases.

  • @blinkachu5275
    @blinkachu5275 6 місяців тому +4

    As for your "Player A/Player B" scenario
    I get what you were going for, but it just doesn't really work
    No Souls game has ever really explained to you what the best way to win is. The first boss in Dark Souls you can cheese with the black Firebombs you can pick at the start
    Outside of that, there's no criteria for fun. Player B might enjoy learning all the attack patterns to perfection and parrying everything (I would consider myself mostly in this camp, however, on my first playthrough I did use summons as I also like to just enjoy playing a game without going full analysis mode) but Player A doesn't, they just prefer to play the game and see how far they get. That doesn't mean that Player A's experience is now somehow nullified because they chose to summon and use consumables.
    I also disagree that you don't need to learn how to parry until much later in the game. Once you get the Mad Clown Puppet/King of Puppets, dodging isn't really going to help you much and parrying will become a necessity, even if you summon for King of Puppets (the summon will rarely make it to the very end of that fight)

  • @blinkachu5275
    @blinkachu5275 6 місяців тому +3

    Hmm, now having finished your video:
    I get your points, I just fundamentally disagree with them. The devs give you the tools to play how you want. You CHOSE to use those projectile cheese strats. You made a conscious choice to do that.
    You can't say "well the devs didn't force me to learn so I didn't". That's not how a Souls game works. A Souls game is an Action Adventure RPG. RPG meaning: It gives you the freedom to choose however you wish to play it.
    In Dark Souls, magic is the strongest option at the start and completely nullifies any "you need to learn the patterns" as the bosses genuinely rarely know how to deal with ranged character. You can literally steamroll entire areas. If you want a melee build, the Drake Sword will keep you company without issue for half the game and basically be a cheese strat on its own.
    I understand that your first playthrough wasn't enjoyable, and that sucks to hear, but it honestly was your own choice, and you need to take that responsibility up with yourself, rather than with the devs.
    I summoned on my first playthrough (didn't use throwables at all really), and had a grand ol' time with the game. On my second playthrough, going for the platinum, I didn't summon and beat all bosses on my own. I had to learn all the patterns as on my first playthrough I didn't really need to most of the time save for a few like the Puppet Devouring Swamp Monster. On NG+ after I beat all bosses on my own too, even though a lot of them have moves that can literally one shot you. And I enjoyed that playthrough too.
    It's not up to a dev to force you into a specific playstyle when it comes to a game that is built around character stats. It's up to you to choose how you want to engage with the game. Want the easiest playthrough: you can choose to use summons, all consumables and buffs in the world. Want the hardest playthrough? Do a challenge run. Those are the extremes. And there's plenty of ways to play the game in between.
    Take LilAggy for instance, beating the game with only the left arm. Another UA-camr recently beat the game not parrying or blocking at all (so it is possible, though I imagine a lot harder).
    The game gives you plenty of time to learn its mechanics before the secret end boss. If you choose to ignore all the tutorials and hints the game's been dropping since the very beginning with the first elite enemy in that Police Puppet, then that's entirely your own fault and putting it on the devs is simply projection.
    Sorry for 3 long ass comments, I genuinely was interested to see about your take and I had much to say in response. I understand if you disagree with my points, however, as a game dev myself I doubt I would change my mind on them.

    I was player A my first playthrough and I killed the Nameless Puppet after about 2 hours. Some of the bosses that everyone else killed easily, I struggled with even with using a Specter. Simon Manus was the worst for me. I think a lot has to do with your play style. This is my first souls-like game so I used the Specter to learn how to play the game with the bosses but the mini bosses were just as difficult or more so than the actual bosses. I'm on the Nameless Puppet fight with ng+ now. I haven't gone into the fight yet but I know that I can beat him because I have improved my game play. It's a fantastic game. I have enjoyed it so much even dying as much as I did my first playthrough. Great review.

    My first playthrough was kind of like player A but not exactly. I used summons when I could but I still learned the game’s mechanics fairly well. My main problem was that I got mad a little too easily when I was struggling and that held me back from having an easier time. Like I struggled HARD on laxasia and Simon my first playthrough taking like 30+ tries for each but on my ng+ runs I beat them both in less than 3 tries. Once you know the game mechanics the game is only mildly challenging, but it’s for sure an acquired taste to get used to

    I had a similar experience, though without throwables. I mostly use the Specter to draw aggro so that I could get from behind. But when I hit the nameless puppet, that was an absolute wall. I ended up grinding until all my stats were 30. And even then, it was a difficult fight. It took around 40 hours. my second playthrough, I actually got better at the perfect guard and got a lot more aggressive. And actually took the time to read what the skill tree actually does. I ended up beating the game in around 20 hours with most of my stats at 20 and my health at 15. After that I did my third play through which was NG+ and beat it in less than 20 which is saying a lot considering this game's NG+ is about as difficult as a fronsoft NG+3

    Dont really agree with the Player A and B examples, at least from the playthroughs and comments I’ve seen. If anything, it’s the veterans who feel a weird sense of shame for engaging with the games systems that end up raging and calling the game bad because they were too stubborn to adjust their play styles. Especially when the game is tuned to feast on those ingrained habits.

    @IlIlIlIlIlIlIlIlIlIlIlIlIl. 3 місяці тому +1

    I feel like the odd one out when it comes to this game, in that I just... don't like memorizing movesets. don't get me wrong, I learn boss movesets in order to succeed in Souls games, but I learn them through intuition and operant conditioning rather than mapping them out in my head like a decision tree--and in my experience with From games that's always been a viable approach.
    not so much in Lies of P. videos like this often seem to be saying, "Lies of P is fun if you do your homework and learn the right way to respond to everything". that really does sound like homework to me--with all the fun that entails--and the bosses in Lies of P often feel like pop quizzes I'm not prepared for, rather than novel, exhilarating challenges that test how well I've internalized how the game works.
    as a definite "Player A", I wouldn't even say difficulty is an issue. there's nothing here I've needed to marinate on over the course of several days like Melania in Elden Ring. with that fight, though, however frustrated I got I still felt motivated to keep throwing myself at the challenge; honing my strategy over dozens of attempts never felt like work. whereas with Lies of P too often it's like "ugh, guess I have to hit the books". the differences in design are subtle, but I definitely feel a difference.
    not knocking the game. with all its highs and lows, Lies of P averages out to "pretty good!" in my book. it's just frustrating not to be able to enjoy it in the way others seem to.

      @IlIlIlIlIlIlIlIlIlIlIlIlIl. 3 місяці тому +1

      ironically I just got to Nameless Puppet and I'm actually having an decent time learning to perfect guard against its moves. its attacks feel a little more "legible" than those of many previous bosses. I think the game might have benefited from having a fight like its first stage earlier on.
      I'd also love to see a boss rematch feature; that could mitigate the problem of people cheesing bosses to make progress and "not learning anything". it wouldn't even have to give rewards. just, if the mechanics take so much getting-used-to, why not give players the opportunity to get used to them by testing out different approaches to a boss? I think the linearity also creates a situation where bosses can feel like roadblocks rather than fun challenges. being able to try again when you're not just desperate to get to the next area would be a big help.

    • @IlIlIlIlIlIlIlIlIlIlIlIlIl.
      @IlIlIlIlIlIlIlIlIlIlIlIlIl. 2 місяці тому +1

      so by the time I beat the Nameless Puppet I was completely checked out, just tapping guard at the the right times, attacking when I had an opening, and only really even moving when I got pushed into a corner and couldn't see what was going on. this must have been the "right way" to play, because I was punished for doing anything else. in the end it wasn't easy or hard, fun or unfun--just an odd exercise in memorization I had to get through.
      still not knocking the game. I wish I could have found it enjoyable in the way others have. but after repenting of my "player A" habits, learning to play it correctly and beating it, all I can say is "huh, well, that was one of the games of all time"

    I really really enjoyed the video. After +100 hours with LoP, I've almost finished my No Level/No P-Organ/No Items/No Arm run and I had absolutely no clue you could go so far into the game without learning much. Honestly, having learned this, I wish the game let players summon more frequently, especially for The Walker of Illusions or even some non-boss elite enemies.
    The truth is, the majority of players just want to spend a precious weekend experiencing the game without actively devoting mental energy to studying combos and move-sets. And to be fair to the game, The Nameless Puppet is indeed an *optional* boss.
    If anything, I think this speaks to the game's unmatched flexibility that you can dynamically set the level of its difficulty for yourself. You can always choose to impose a challenge on yourself and not engage with a certain facilitating mechanic, but you definitely can't add an easy mode by yourself. And again, the final boss is optional and most people who decide to just pass through the game via summons and throwables probably don't care that much about a singular boss.

    The issue is basically that the spectre is way too resilient. It is basically a "skip boss" button. I have a pet peeve with certain bosses that have a lengthy first phase followed by a totally different second phase. Can't stand them. Once I learn the first phase well enough to the point it becomes boring I summon to burn through it and get to some actual progression, ideally the summon dies in the phase change so it doesn't ruin the second phase. Even that amount of cheesing kind of ruins the game though, makes me wish summons weren't as accessible.

    This game is literally my second favorite Souls-type game. Bloodborne is my first, but this definitely hit that same spot for me
    I tried Dark Souls I, II last year and Dark Souls III when it released, and while I wouldn't say they were bad at all, in fact I think they are pretty darn good in their own right (each of them), I do think they "lack", for lack of a better word. Lack what differs per entry, but they still just aren't as enjoyable to me due to those reasons.
    Dark Souls I lacks consistency for me. It started out great (save for a few bosses like the Moonlight Butterfly and Capra Demon), but at about the halfway point the game genuinely became... bad. And I get why, time constraints and such during development, but it's so glaringly obvious that after you beat Ornstein and Smough, it's like the rest of the game was made in half the time the first half was made in. Areas suck, bosses suck or are recolors of previous bosses, heck, some areas just are filled with previous bosses for good measure. I get that it's a lot of people's first experience with a Souls-like so I get the nostalgia factor, but for me, I genuinely had a great time with the first half, and then absolutely *hated* the second half, at least until Gwyn
    Dark Souls II (I played Vanilla, not the inferior SotFS edition) lacks consistency too, but in the opposite direction. The first half is mostly weak. I don't think it's as bad as Dark Souls I's second half, because while the bosses are bad, the areas are beautiful and mostly fun to navigate, and the improvements made over Dark Souls I in terms of mechanics (yes, it does factually have mechanics that are better than DSI, even if ADP is one of the worst stats in gaming history) made the first half at least okay to navigate. But then you get through the second half and especially the DLC (save for the co-op areas, they should've balanced those to party-size instead of basically forcing you to summon), and there's some genuinely good bosses there, some even great
    Dark Souls III lacks threat and color. I love Bloodborne so I'm not unfamiliar with a consistent color scheme, however, in Bloodborne it felt fitting due to the gothic aesthetic. In Dark Souls III everything's just grey. It genuinely ruined my enjoyment of just looking through the areas, which is a big part why I play these games, not just the bosses. And in terms of threat, I think it's the easiest Souls-game in the lineup, with its OP rolling spam.
    Overall the Dark Souls trilogy also lacks fun in its weapon system imo. With most weapons feeling "same-y". Which was part of why Bloodborne was such a gamechanger since while it had a lot less weapons, each weapon was unique and had two forms each to make them even more unique from one another.
    I know my feelings aren't shared by most people, though I do feel a lot of that is due to nostalgia. It's why Dark Souls II is seen as that "ugly middle child" even though it genuinely is on the same level as Dark Souls I, just in different ways. People often bring up complaints about Dark Souls II that literally were the same issue in Dark Souls I (as an example: often you see them complain about "Blue Smelter Demon is just a copy of Smelter Demon", ignoring that Dark Souls I literally has THREE OF THE SAME BOSSES)
    Elden Ring: I couldn't get into this game, the open world just ruined the tightness of a Souls-like experience for me. The fact that in earlier Souls-likes you always knew "If I finish an area, I'm ready for the boss", which now just does not exist in the slightest, genuinely just made the game boring for me as I felt I needed to grind way more or was just too overpowered, there was barely any balance to it. So can't speak much further on it.
    Now, onto Lies of P lmao
    Lies of P almost has everything I would want out of a Souls-game. It isn't perfect, but it's very much close to being so. From tight gameplay, every weapon genuinely feeling like its own thing due to the great "handle + blade" system, the durability mechanic actually serving a purpose as opposed to Dark Souls, the health-rally mechanic, the parry mechanic and stagger mechanic.
    The environments, the music, the NPCs and their quests, the Hotel as a hub. It's all so fucking good.
    I think the parry-window is a bit TOO tight, that's one of my main criticisms. I finished the game 3 times already, Platinum'd it, once even on NG+, so I can deal with the parry-window myself, but it took me a long time to really get there and even now I don't consistently hit it all the time, because it's just so darn tight.
    I also think some enemies rely a bit too much on the "delayed attack" type. I don't see it as a major criticism because you can learn it, but this also makes it so you have to learn it a lot longer.
    Thirdly: 2 phase boss fights. Also iffy on it. On one hand, I like it, I think it gives some of the coolest cutscenes in the entire game (seriously, P standing there shocked as Romeo holds up his scythe is straight up anime shit)
    That being said, I do also think having the first phase take so long on King of Puppets made Romeo a lot harder and more frustrating as I genuinely just couldn't really learn his attack patterns because I constantly had to go through King of Puppets first.
    Overall though, I think this game should've been nominated for Game of the Year. For their first outing this is genuinely amazing, but even if it had said FromSoftware on the tin, I would've still thought it was a great time. Hitting consistent parries in a fight is one of the best feelings. The first time it fully clicked was probably with the Mad Clown Puppet, where you can literally parry his rotating punch attack for an almost instant stagger bar.

      You should try Hollow Knight, it's by far the best souls game out there and it's the only souls game i've ever played which didn't depress the living shit out of me to a point of self-abuse. It's actually fun and refreshing, yet still challenging enough to make it rewarding, unlike the other souls games where by the time you finish them you're mentally exhausted and wish you'd never been born and you don't even care about the game anymore, you just need to get that load off of your back. Those games were thoroughly engineered to depress you and make you feel bad about yourself, Hollow Knight is the only game that doesn't do that. Praise the sun.

    It's not the game's responsibility to force you to learn the mechanics. If you went through the game not bothering to learn how to play it properly you shouldn't get the good ending. I really don't understand this argument. I'm not an elitist, and I think summoning and using throwables are valid ways to complete these games, but I don't understand the complaint that you're entitled to the good ending even though you avoided the learning curve earlier on.

    • @mScalgione

      I think it's actually good game design and increases replayability to disable summons for the true final boss. Take you, for example, who didn't enjoy the game on first playthrough. You still came back for a second playthrough because you hit that final roadblock. If the game gave you a summon option for the true final boss I think you don't pick it up again, and you never get that enjoyment you got on NG+

    Lies of P is a better Souls-like than most of the FromSoft catalogue. Only Sekiro and AC6 stand to it, quality wise. Elden Ring? Huge missed opportunity to improve the combat, if it had the Lies of P perfect guard, it would have being much better game for it.
    Also, you seem to be reviewing the bosses after 3 patches of heavy handed nerfs that all but destroyed the integrity of the game. My recommendation for any fans of the genre is - downgrade your steam version to 1.0 patch, if you want challenge.
    I otherwise disagree with most of your critiques of the game. It shows fundamental misunderstanding of what was even happening.

    I don't really feel like this game is just a Fromsoft Frankenstein's monster. There are definitely elements that feel familiar and i could totally agree this is the best Bloodborne sequel we will ever get because, well #%@^ Miyazaki's lazy a$$. However, apart from the familiar, which is there really to pull in Souls players, the overall game has so many unique twists that work well together that if the game said Fromsoft on its startup screen this would easily be GotY at awards shows. But it doesn't so it gets shat on. I don't care if it wins anything though, it is easily the best game i have played since Elden Ring and, for my money, is much more replayable, mostly because the huge build variety and for more consistent and fun boss fights than Elden. I am completely under the spell of what Neowiz did here and they should get far more praise for their effort and clear passion they had in making this game.

    So your biggest complaint which you think the developers should take responsibility fixing instead of working on a sequel is that despite constant obvious suggestions the game makes to encourage perfect guarding, you can choose to play wrong and cheese? Man show me a souls game that this isn’t the case please, show me what game has come to some solution where the majority of bosses have no cheap way out it’s not a game made by fromsoft that’s for sure. Like come on man it’s a balance what do you want them to take out the throwable merchant so that everyone just has less access and the game suffers in a new way? You want bosses to run after you more giving you less time to do anything besides perfect guard so you have to learn or die? Okay but what about fable charge and legion consumables that allow players to have a more dynamic/fun combat experience and what about the weapon durability system? How would players have time to manage these awesome in game features? Some people just want a game made perfectly for them not realizing that game would suck lol

    7:10 spoken like a souls veteran that still hasnt learned proper dodge direction and positioning, to be quite frank. im glad elden ring bosses are the way they are, they are the next step in fromsoft boss evolution, bosses were getting boring after ds3 and bb.
    most souls veterans played elden ring the same way they played ds3 or bb, by just R1ing and dodging backards 80% of the time, and in elden ring, thats a big nono. unlike bb and ds3, the R1 isnt your main form of attack in ER, elden ring bosses demand you use jumping attacks, ashes of war, R2 and rolling R1s just as much. too bad souls veterans just want another copy pasted batch of ds3/bb bosses, hopefully fromsoft keep ignoring you guys are keep stepping up the boss evolution to counter souls veteran instincts, ds3 started the whole "no strafing, butt poking and panic rolling" design of souls games, elden ring perfected it.
