R.I.P. Mr. Kaline. He was my first hero. A gentleman, humble and gracious on and off the field.
The greatest thing about watching this, for me anyway, is the way these ballplayers, both Cardinals and Tigers, just went about their business. No crazy celebrations. Just doing their job for the love of the game. Mr. Freehan should be in the HOF as well. No question about it.
I miss the way players in ALL the 4 major sports used to conduct themselves on the field. It was the GAME that mattered.

Al Kaline #6 the best Detroit Tiger ever, was a "ROCK" in Right Field for 22 years. He passed away Monday April 6, 2020 at the age of 85. Mr. Kaline was a 17 Time All Star. He hit 399 Home Runs. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in the first vote. His Salary his last season with the Detroit Tigers in 1977 was $100,000. He was a good Man! "The actions of an individual will determine their presence in time!" THANK YOU Mr. Kaline for showing the world your fine sportsmanship and God gifted talents as you played the game and the years after as "Mr. Tiger!" YOU were the BEST!

I was only 4 years old in '68, so i do not remember this series. But i do remember the Tigers starting around 1970 - i used to listen to them on WBCK, Battle Creek, Michigan on my little red, white and blue transistor radio. I remember that the Oakland A's were their Achilles heel - oh, how i "despised" them! It says a lot that i still remember so many of the A's of that time - Joe Rudi, Sal Bando, Bert Campeneris (!!), Rollie Fingers, Catfish Hunter, (the catcher's name is on the tip of my tongue!), and of course, how could I neglect to mention Reggie Jackson?
Some of my favorite Tigers of that era were Norm Cash, Jim Northrup, Willie Horton, Mickey Stanley, Mickey Lolich, John Hiller (I believe it was 31 saves around 1972), Aurelio Rodriguez (his throws from 3rd were LASERS!!), and of course, also my all time favorite, Al Kaline. There was no one like him, amazingly gifted, yet even more humble. Whenever people talk about recent stars, i always bring him up, also using that $100,000 salary figure - he wasn’t even certain that he was worth that amount!!! Imagine such an attitude today - it doesn't exist!

Three outstanding fielding plays in the bottom of the first inning gave Detroit a big spark and a boost of confidence for McLain. McLain's clean fielding of a Brock hooper started it. Then plays by Stanley and Wert put down the Cards in the first. Two runs in the second got McLain a lead and Detroit erupted with 13 runs as McLain coasted, setting the stage for Lolich.

Thanks Virgil. The infamous butt kicking by the Tigers that pretty much won them this series.

The last season of two leagues, no divisions, completely balanced regular season schedule, no playoffs. First place of ten clubs goes directly to the World Series.

As a baseball history enthusiast, it strikes me just how gentlemen like and respectful these old sport announcers were to their audience. Even if they were assholes off camera, they sure did a fine job making a good, clean atmosphere for the people tuned into the TV.
This is something that you'll never see out of Alex Rodriguez, who is now a MLB studio analyst for Fox Sports, which has been on the decline for a pretty long time. Other commentators are so dry and stale I couldn't care less about them.
Money, greed, lack of sportsmanship and having to shove down endless commercials down your throat ruined the sport. Even attending the baseball stadiums, you're subject to a bunch of crap advertising and marketing between innings. And don't get me started on how expensive it is to go to the stadiums. Not really something the average person can actually afford anymore.

Jimmy Northrup hit llnd Inning salami in this contest as visiting Tigers 🐅 recorded their llnd successive win over Cardinals after losing 3, series first 4 games to force decisive Game VII, which they'd win to take series 4 games to 3

    FUN FACTS:
Steve Carlton’s favorite player in high school was SANDY KOUFAX...thus, why he wore #32
After this game, Cardinals owner Augie Busch threatened the team in the locker room....saying that if they lost game 7, big changes were coming....well we all know what happened with game 7....yet the only “big change” was Busch traded Orlando Cepeda for Joe Torre

Great point. Not to mention that 2006 Cardinals team pulling off one of the biggest upsets in modern Fall Classic history (at least in last 50-60 years)by winning that series in an easy 5-game victory.

He won 24 games the next season, so I guess he wasn’t hurt too bad. Pitchers didn’t leave games in 1968 unless they were knocked out of the game. No pampering of players like today’s softies.
