Nice beginner tutorial. I used to try to open the bag the right way, now I just slice it open with my pocket knife like a ninja ;) sort of therapeutic. And I can't believe that smoker doesn't come with a lift-out tool. I'd have to make one.
Thanks! Yeah I usually end up slicing the bag open too lol I am glad I caught one of the few times I got it the right way on camera. I think they do make a tool for it but I use anything I can find with a hook to pull it out lol but now I just put the gloves on.
My PB junior comes up to a nice 275 after I start. I usually wait about 15 minutes after I put the basket in and close it up, but after I put my meat and a chunk of wood in, the temp soars to over 400 for a while. I have everything set the way they suggest. What am I doing wrong?
They sometimes run hot but 400 seems like a lot even for the junior. I would suggest adding your charcoal into the basket and put a firestarter or 2 in the coals, light it while its in the barrel and let it start that way so just a section of the coals start burning. sometimes when you dump all the hot coals its a little too much heat because all the charcoal starts burning
I usually always start my PBC in the barrel. just through a couple fire starters in with the charcoal and light it up. This video is showing how the pit barrel suggest starting it.
Great video but my issue with the pit barrel has always been keeping it lit. At first I thought it was the ash pan filling up so I changed to lump coal. Same thing. Have you experienced this and if so any recommendations? Thanks
I dont have an ash pan but I usually have to clean the ash out of the barrel before every cook. I usually let the coals burn for awhile with the lid off so they get nice and hot and I also add some wood chunks which seem to help keep it lit. You can also try opening the vent in the bottom a little bit
I’d be interested in knowing what your tempt is with the charcoal and how consistent it remains because mine just climbs and climbs and won’t stop until it reaches around 450. When calling Pit Barrel about the issue they advised that they don’t recommend anything Kingsford, funny isn’t it. Every Pit Barrel fire start video I’ve seen begins with someone grabbing a bag of Kingsford bahahaha
@SmokestackJoes there's actually a UA-cam has a video that explains the toxicity between briquettes. But I'm with you brother. lump charcoal it is for me

Cotton balls ..91 isopropyl alcohol...cheap firestarters...start fire in barrel...no big gloves needed...and no accidents

When I go over to Joe’s, the barbecue, I get a tetanus shot first
It comes in the welcome bag and we have a nurse on site haha
If you use Kingsford you're a fool. Do your research. Highly toxic. If you're going to use briquettes get BB. Not an affiliate there's also others
Yeah I agree, I used kingsford in this to show the briquette method but I haven't used it in forever. I always use lump
