I can’t think of another group that has several songs that literally give me goosebumps like Simon and Garfunkel. ❤️ This one, Bridge Over Troubled Water, Sounds of Silence.
It's called Counterpoint, where you have 2 songs at the same time. The main song is the medieval song & the 2nd song is an antiwar song written by Paul Simon.
I’m so grateful that when I was growing up I got to hear this and other really great songs just by turning on the radio. I’m glad you enjoyed it as much as we did. I think it reminds you of pirate music because a lot of what we know as pirate songs and also sea shanties have their roots in England, Ireland, Scotland, or Wales, or nearby countries. “Scarborough Fair” is a traditional English ballad dating back at least to the mid-17th century. “Canticle” was written by Paul Simon. They did a masterful job of blending these two songs together.
Early signs of mastery from Paul Simon. A popular song that everyone knew way back when, despite the obvious medieval quality. Medieval music was an input for rock, just like gospel, folk, etc. I know you've heard plenty of harpsichord sneaking in with songs from the 60s, and of course "A Whiter Shade of Pale" could hardly get more medieval. Medieval concepts were also popular, aside from the music. "Don't Fear the Reaper," "Dust in the Wind," "Point of Know Return," "Carry On Wayward Son," and others tapped into the Middle Ages.
It's a medieval song. So old that it has many, many verses. One of my favorites (left off of Simon and Garfunkel's version) and the one that would've helped you understand the meaning (the Canticle portion addresses the Vietnam War) is: "Love imposes impossible tasks, Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme, But none more so than any would ask. She once was a true love of mine." The reference to spices is that they make food more palatable (remember... Medieval times!) and so it might make the relationship better...? The singer was obviously demanding! 😂
"Bridge Over Troubled Water" is one of the most beautiful songs ever. Other greats by them are "The Boxer" and "Sounds Of Silence" (also covered amazingly by Disturbed).
Anuna is a celtic choral choir from Ireland. Check out Anuna at the 39 euro vision national song contest which features the first shown time of River dance in 1994 on 30 April. You will find this on UA-cam 300 million people watched this. You will love it.
This song (as well as several other Simon & Garfunkel songs) played prominently in the hit movie "The Graduate" when it came out. Go see it when you have the chance.
My favorite Irish traditional group is called the Chieftains. My favorite song is "a change in my demeanor ". Anything from their album "long black veil"
Oh my goodness oh my goodness I can't believe you did this I can't believe you did this back in 7th grade I was in girls choir and I did this song I can't believe that you did this oh thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you shadow❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Scarborough fair is a traditional medieval folk song from England. SCARBOROUGH IS A TOWN IN England. Simon and Garfunkel took this folk song and made what you are listening to now. This folk song is hundreds of years old.
This is such a beautiful song from the generation that was facing the draft during the Vietnam war. If you listen to the words behind the music, it's a protest song. Go look up the lyrics. The song is medieval, the second set of lyrics in the background is a protest song.
Great idea!! Home Free should do this. Wow !! Home Free did Sea Shanty Melody, then a game company requested they submit a song, so Home Free did Skull and Bones for the game. Amazing talent.
Scarborough fair is an English folk song, not Celtic/Scottish, and is combined here with a Paul Simon song originally titled The Side Of A Hill, but with some lyrical changes renamed Canticle
For an edgier sound of Simon & Garfunkel, check out At the Zoo, and A Hazy Shade of Winter (not the Bangles' cover, which wasn't bad, but not nearly as good as the original).
A very deep rabbit hole you're going down, not all S&G songs are this soft, but I think you will love them all. Some great ideas in other comments, I would add America and Mrs. Robinson and, for contrast, Richard Corey (it is a song with a dark subject matter, however) to your list.
Okay as far as I know this is the only double song that they have I'm not for sure but I think so if you do like this song try the boxer and coming to America you might like those too shadow
If you like Anuna try Clannad as well, they’re great; and there’s another good album by Lunatic Soul that has Nordic mythology in all the songs, the album is called Through Shaded Woods and I really enjoy that one.
The very definition of "classic" . I love u caught the celtic undertones with olde tymes vibez. Well dun sir. IF you loke this, try The Harp Twins. Slainte ☘️
The song is beautiful but the lyrics are dark. One song is singing about a past love that is being ordered to perform impossible tasks to win the singers love back, hence he doesn't really love her. The second song is about a war order to kill civilians, including a small child, while.the village sleeps; "Generals order their soldiers to kill!" This song is an oxymoron. It is absolutely beautiful but so incredibly sad at the same time. One listens to it and feels good because of the softness of the music and vocals but you should feel angry and sad at the meaning of the lyrics.
"It sounds like a pirate song"??? It's a medieval style called madrigal. It couldn't be farther from a "pirate song" or a sea shanty, as you probably mean.

One of the most beautiful melodies in music ❤❤

The melody, Paul's guitar, and the harmonies make this song haunting and gorgeous. The touches of glockenspiel and harpsichord were genius.

This is one of my favorite S&G song also. I like "Only Living boy in New York" even more 🙂

This song makes me cry and I don't even really understand it.
That's because it's beautiful.

YES!! So glad you loved this! Great reaction 😍
Bridge Over Troubled Water! One of the most beautiful songs Ever! ❤️Sound of Silence too….the lyrics ❤️

"El Condor Pasa" by Simon & Garfunkel is my all time favorite song, (I have the music tattooed on my arm) I would love to see you react to that one.
Great Song !!

You must find this song performed by Simon and Garfunkel and Andy Williams from the Andy Williams show there is a video on UA-cam 🎉❤❤❤
There is a double length version of Scarborough Fair 😮😊
Scarborough fair is a traditional medieval folk song from England. SCARBOROUGH IS A TOWN IN England. Simon and Garfunkel took this folk song and made what you are listening to now. This folk song is hundreds of years old.

Yes, the second set of lyrics come from an anti-war Paul Simon song called "The Side of a Hill."
Love this song!!!

I saw Pippin and Merry cover this song at The Green Dragon on Middle earth 😅
The group - Association - have these kind of mellow male harmonies from the 60s pop/folk songs they had hits with also.....
Anuna is a wonderful Irish vocal ensemble!
After you get over the beautiful, intricate, harmonies check out the lyrics. It’s two songs in one with interwoven themes and stories.
Yes, if you grew up in the Middle Ages this would sound very familiar.
You Ace. Are a true music lover.

I'm so excited for this song I can die❤❤❤❤❤
This gives the spices that I use when I roast a turkey.
Their best, hands down.

Check out Jethro Tull…very different than Simon & Garfunkel but has some Renaissance era influences…in particular the “Songs From the Wood” album.
A very deep rabbit hole you're going down, not all S&G songs are this soft, but I think you will love them all. Some great ideas in other comments, I would add America and Mrs. Robinson and, for contrast, Richard Corey (it is a song with a dark subject matter, however) to your list.
Check out Enya.. beautiful music. Btw Scarborough is a town on the North East coast of England in the UK. Been there many times.
Okay as far as I know this is the only double song that they have I'm not for sure but I think so if you do like this song try the boxer and coming to America you might like those too shadow
Not a canticle, but you'll like "Sound of Silence" if you haven't heard it yet.
The word you're looking for is Medieval (also Renaissance).
❤
Know Anuna quite well, and they are an excellent group. You should check out Clannad.
If you like Anuna try Clannad as well, they’re great; and there’s another good album by Lunatic Soul that has Nordic mythology in all the songs, the album is called Through Shaded Woods and I really enjoy that one.

If you love this, I would suggest "The Mummers' Dance" by Loreena McKennitt.
Sea Shanty

Anuna does this song

If like Pirate songs and need a laugh, check out Ray Stevens song, The Pirate Song (I Want to Sing and Dance)
Or The Last Saskatchewan Pirate by The Arrogant Worms.
How about letting the song finish
Don’t make like this anymore.. wow
