  • I had a little downtime between BMW projects so I an afternoon or two on this weird little Yamaha Champ LC50 - It's a 50cc two-stroke scooter with shaft drive, a monoshock suspension and a single-sided swingarm - all done in 1979!
I throw away the old, complicated carburetor and swap on a new knockoff of a PW50 carb. I got it super cheap on ebay with an airbox and cables, which turned out to be a mistake because I ended up having to build my own cables for it since the originals didn't work! I also ended up deleting the oil pump as it interfered with the intake on the new carb. I pulled out the internals and "fabricated" a block-off plate.
It runs though! And seems to run well. I rip it around the block and annoy pretty much everyone in the area.

I can see my 2 wheeler problem is not bad. I only have about 15. Just picked up 3 yamaha qt50's, all run really well after a bit of carb cleaning and adjusting, new oil and such. Looking at a champ for pretty cheap. Nice video and great work. I like the oil injection on such a small bike. I always make sure it works well.

What mixture do you use. Very helpful video. I just ordered the same carb

To be honest it has not gotten much riding but when it gets warm again I'll probably go 32:1

@@roodlum I appreciate the response. So I got it running and I used the same carburetor set up as you did you have. Any trouble with it stalling out when you give it throttle? Also what did you do with the five or so vacuum lines.

      @@roodlum any ideas?

I capped off pretty much all of the vacuum lines and used a manual petcock valve instead of the complex vacuum petcock that came factory. I didn't have any issues with stalling but that could be a vacuum leak certainly.

Does anyone know what size tubing to buy for all the vacuum hoses? I'm having trouble starting the bike and think it's from the old cracked hoses. Thanks

Hey I have a champ 1980 doing the same thing as you have the carb from ebay now to make the new wiring.

i was thinking of buying one of these things. Ive got a qt50 which it shares *some parts with but im still on the fence. its a two speed which i think is pretty cool.

It’s a fun, quirky little bike. And with the 2-speed, it keeps up on surface streets surprisingly well.

@@roodlum I moved from Buffalo down to Orlando three years ago and have been shocked how much use you can actually get out of a 49cc scooter here. I have several other old 2t scooters I've rehabbed but I'm worried about parts availability with the champ. It's the odd yamaha that never really found its place. That said 2 speed is nice for a big dude like me.
