The thing I loved most about Babel, among all the other things I loved about it, was how it articulated a grief I never knew I had. Throughout the book, Robin was mourning a version of himself that he had lost, because he had “chose” to leave his motherland when he was ten and didn’t know what leaving meant. We never learn his Chinese name! The name his mother gave him! The person that would’ve grown into that name died when Robin set sail for England. And as someone who hasn’t used her Chinese name since she was ten, I really felt that.

Absolutely agree with what you said about Babel making anti-colonialist research accessible to mainstream audiences and it hit me that this is probably why i've seen some reviews finding issue with the fact that RF Kuang lays things bare and doesn't leave space for the reader to reach their own conclusions. But that's exactly the point, she doesn't leave space for people to brush away the experiences of Robin, Ramy, Victoire, and Letty, and the effects of colonialism and capitalism.

I am so with you on“If we were villains“ . It‘s one of my most favourite books. It makes me feel all kind of emotions, it‘s so beautifully written, the characters unlocked something deep inside my soul and heart.
And I absolutely love how the author explores the main themes: friendship, love & obsession. I loved it when I first read it and •the truth is that I‘m in love with it still•. No book could live up to it since …

The main criticism about Babel that I've seen (at least of those that aren't rooted in racism...) is that Kuang "tells instead of showing". As an autistic person who misses meaning and nuance in books and films and daily life...I found her writing style refreshing and all-encompassing. It felt rounded and complete, yet I still found it intriguing and ended it with so many thoughts and questions in the best way possible. Also, as someone whose ancestors chose to assimilate to the country they fled to, refusing to ever again speak their mother-tongue or engage in much of their culture...it really hit home. All those stories, lives, all that language...lost forever. Because they would only be accepted in ways that benefitted their new homeland.

Can I just say how much I love Victoire in Babel bc I think she was the perfect subversion of one of the branches of the mammy trope. There's a great video by The Take on this topic but essentially everyone knows the archetype of the mammy and how she evolved into black nannies, which evolved into the understanding, constantly serving black woman to be likable. Victoire's character was clearly playing along this stereotype to make herself acceptable to the teachers and her friends so they wouldn't wrongfully assume something of her and not want her anymore, especially in her friendship with Letty. I love that her drive was that she wanted to be selfish. Victoire wasn't willing to sacrifice herself or give up her dignity anymore because she knew she deserved her future, and I think it was perfect

I think one of the reasons why Babel felt less 'dense' in terms of the academic themes is because it's very much a classic bildungsroman text. RF Kuang said that she was inspired by Dickens' novels, particularly Great Expectations and Oliver Twist, and I think it really shows. It's honestly quite a clever move considering how victorian novels like Great Expectations often mention colonization and imperialism in the background but never address them head on.

I literally just finished Babel this morning. Stayed up until 4 just to finish it bc I knew I’d put off reading it if I stopped last night. I can’t express how much I love Robin, and the many ways RFK explored his grief and how many of those forms of grief were in turn affected by the many forms of violence coming from imperialism. RFK is so heavy handed with her writing, so much that it became tedious and unbearable and lacking nuance in the latter half, but I didn’t mind too much as I’m kind of used to it from her. But this book was so heartbreaking and so memorable and still somehow so grounded in reality. I am so glad RFK has made this book so accessible, especially to people who are unfamiliar with or just starting out with decolonization theory and approaching history through that lens. Letty and Prof. Lovell were also such compelling agents of the imperialist mindset; I’ve read some of the most horrifying lines from them-Lovell especially. I’m obsessed and I’m so glad you loved it too! I didn’t know where to put all these feelings so watching you talk about this book was a bit cathartic.

I'm so excited to read Babel now! I added it to my cart immediately after watching your video. My dark academia recommendation is Bunny by Mona Awad. I'm not sure if it's very similar to babel or if we were villains, but I'd love to see your opinion on it! Also, I love your longer videos!

If we were villains put me through a rollercoaster of emotions MY GOD. I was so sad when I finished it but also couldn't wait to get to the end? My poor heart was feeling one emotion and then I got to like the last 2 pages and it flipped my emotions so fast, I did a full 360. A masterpiece, and that's coming from someone who isnt a massive fan of dark academia. And yeah the highlight was of course our romance my god it was soooo good

It is so interesting how different people can have such vastly different opinions about a book… it’s even more interesting when two BookTubers who I think are each pretty similar in tastes, and VERY similar in their intellectual critiques of literature, are on opposite ends of the spectrum with a book review. Books and Lala regards Catherine House as an all time favorite!

I picked up Catherine House. Initially, I was excited, but it has gathered dust on the bookshelf as I couldn't bring myself to feel as excited as I did when I first started.
I really liked Ace of Spades. It was a good, fast read. It hooked me early and wouldn't let go. It does read younger.
