Maqiua is Toshiyuki Inoue's modern masterpiece. He drew 1/3 of the entire movie in terms of animation (his action scenes with the dragons, in particular, were monstrously impressive despite pushing out ROUGH GENGA that looked insanely clean; they're on the P.A Works YT channel. He pushed out even more layouts, and was also an assistant animation director. Everything still had tension and feel.
I don't want to steal the spotlight away from all the other amazing staff members though. However, I really feel like this movie was a great way for him to show off his skills through integrating himself in a more commonly idealistic style, working alongside younger talents at P.A Works.
hey have you got links to some of his genga?
what channel were they on
@@AlexKavazArt Sorry, here you go ua-cam.com/play/PLdp4T5CNlSfBzbDWfDcg8SC70-M0zn_XY.html
Brother could you tell us the name of their channel?
Metropolis will always be a special animation to me. I remember first seeing it when I was about 10 years old playing on Cartoon Network, I was absolutely hooked and came straight back to the television after each ad break. The ending absolutely broke me, I remember crying the first time I saw it and being so taken aback by the soundtrack of the whole film - especially the finale song. Definitely one of the main inspirations that spurred my love of animation.
fun fact: Princess Arete is currently free to watch in its entirety here on UA-cam! only for a limited time, though.
I’m so happy Maquia is on this list. My sister and I JUST watched this on a whim. Not only was it beautiful, I’ve never had a film shake me to the core and make me profusely cry more than it. I just lost my grandfather very early on in life (he was 62) so the cycle of life and death was something that hit me. It’s also the film that has helped me come to the realization that I want to become a mother one day.
Some animations people often overlook are by ADGT by Hanna Barbara. Just Fantastic animation.
And Universals, Spirit, Stallion of the Cimarron. Both have just gorgeous amounts of animation and details to each and the colors are different and unique, they are often overlooked animations that not too many will see as useful until you actually watch and look at how gorgeous the animation is. The movement and unique styles of them both. Spirit does use a bit of older 3D modeling too with an overlay of hand drawn animation during the flight scenes of the eagles and the running of the horses. Super great for those wanting to see animation overlay.
Another overlooked animation for that is the painted Aurthurs Christmas. Painted to look 3-D modeled when in fact it took years to create and it’s all just beautiful. Arron Blaise is another great Animator who shows snippets of his animations online on UA-cam. And sometimes streams the process with his SnowBear sketches! :) Good luck all you lovely animator souls!
I loved Spirit! The soundtrack is super memorable, too.
PRINCESS ARETE IS ON UA-cam FOR A LIMITED TIME ON STUDIO4C'S CHANNEL RIGHT NOW!
man not only you got me into OpenToonz but you also show us how anime actually works

THank you for the recommendations! I watched Metropolis for the first time not too long ago and was quite stunned by it and I'm probably due another viewing.
I've never heard of Princess Arete or Maquia before but they both look really interesting and beautiful.
Recently before I watched this video I saw Princess Arete, and it brought back something I thought was lost. It’s truly a story about enteral strength within one self, and the hypocrisy that are in our tale.
God I love all three of these movies. Such beauty
Some other amazing but relatively unknown animated films would be: Tree of Palme, Brave Story, Big Fish and Begonia, Slumberland, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, Angel's Egg
just watched angels egg recently and it was a damn strange but cautivating and visually beautiful movie. Would like to watch something similar
It’s funny, i recently watched Metropolis. It’s indeed really good to watch if you want to learn animation. The animation is so good!
This video was very informative and helpful! the Maquia ending theme at the end really hit me at the end btw
Looking forward to your content!
Arete was one I had never seen until it’s limited release, and boy what a treat it was !
Studio 4c has Princess Arête free on their UA-cam from January 5, 2024 to February 5, 2024.
Two of the three movies were those i watched as a young teen. I had forgotten about them. I spent much time in my childhood trying to cope by watching these movies, and i often related with melancholy they presented. I don't often comment on youtube videos, but thank you for reminding me of these memories i'd forgotten.
I want to see metropolis again
The second one, I am watching now
There are no tropes in it
All are refreshing unique creations
Thank you for this
really enjoyed this video, you should do more! 💕
You sold me on Maquia. Out of the three I´ve only seen Metropolis. I heard of Maquia before but never knew what it was about.
Fantastic video!
Everyone, please go watch princess arete while it's still up! They're having a limited time screening on UA-cam til December 20th iirc!
Thank you for the recommendations! I’d like to give Metropolis a watch though the others look interesting as well 👀
I remember seeing Metropolis when it first came out at our local cinema and I remember really loving it. I always loved the Anime Film Festivals when they rolled around....also saw Cowboy Bebop movie at the cinema the same way.
Loved seeing both of them on the big screen.
Great movie selection here.... some nice looking movies :)
Wow I'm so jealous, I would have died to see either of those in theaters. Two of my top favorite anime growing up
@@jollyexotic yeah was totally worth going.... Cowboy Bebop was packed to the absolute rim....we got there JUST as the movie started and had to take obscure seats in the very front row.....totally worth it, still.... and Metropolis was just gorgeous on the big screen of course.... :P
I watched Metropolis before and may have to watch it again at some point, since I'm a big Tezuka fan. I remember it being very good, even if a couple of the music choices towards the end are kinda distracting. And I watched Princess Arete a couple of days ago, since it was featured on Studio4C's UA-cam page until Dec. 2nd. Very beautiful and meaningful, if a little too slow-paced at times, but I don't usually mind slower paced films. Haven't seen Maquia yet, though.
i've never even heard these films, but definitely will add them to my watch list. you had me with the concepts, but looking at the animation definitely pushed it over the edge - thanks for the suggestions!
maquia is the most beautiful movie I've ever seen
Thanks
I love PA Works animations!
How do I do angle animation when I learned perspective
hi mr dong i have a really bad lag in the brush of open toonz can you tell me how to fix it
My favorite anime to watch is Oni's ultra 1
Princess Arete is the only one I have not heard of or seen, but since I absolutely LOVE the other two you listed, I am looking for Arete now. Sadly, it doesn't seem to be available in the US?
Actually, the whole film was recently uploaded to UA-cam by Studio 4C, so its official. I watched it and couldn't recommend it enough, it's a truly beautiful film
@@elig8127 It's only available for a limited time though, up until December 2nd.
Does anyone have advice where to legally watch Metropolis and Princess Arete? I'm from Southeast Asia and the closest I could find was a Metropolis Region Code 3 DVD on YesAsia but its out of print.
Check the Studio 4 degrees UA-cam channel - they just legally released the full version of Princess Arete to watch for free for limited time only.
Princess Arête reminds me country Turkey ❤ i dunno why
Another goodone is boy and the beast
Tx vídeo
deca dence season 2 plss
>I kept spoilers to a minimum
>spoils the endgame discovery in Princess Arete right at the introduction
um, sir? I think you kinda failed it.
(not saying ppl without context would understand, but anyone who watches Arete after watching this video will recognise instantly that they were spoiled. not cool tbh)
Love from india man
