I explored this place 10+ years ago. Saw the lab, everything that was still there. Was such a good urbex location.

Great job from both A.C. and Michael. I have enjoyed A.C.’s collection of pictures from Newgulf’s past for years. Michael was a pleasant surprise but makes perfect sense to interview. Third generation Sulfabrat and collector also.

Having been born and raised in Newgulf, it was great to see some old familiar places. It was also nice to see the tours guided by some old familiar faces (AC Shelton in 2012 and Mike Potter in 2023). When I tell outsiders what it was like growing up in this small Texas town, the reaction is usually disbelief. When I first learned what the word “idyllic” meant, my first thought was that it fit Newgulf perfectly. I daresay the other “sulfabrats” who grew up there would agree with me.

My dad was born in Gulf, or Old Gulf as some refer to it, in 1929 & his family moved to Newgulf when he was six. My grandfather worked for the company but died a few years before I was born. I have my dad's old, "The Sulfur Miner" book published in 1948 with a couple of pictures of him as a boy scout in it. I remember dad used to go to the Sulfurcrat reunions when they had them. He always said it was a great place to grow up & I loved listening to his stories about those times.

Such a shame everything is pretty much private land, there’s so much history I’m curious about in newgulf. I’ve always wanted to explore the reservoir and sinkholes but don’t want to get shot for trespassing. Sad that almost everything has been torn down as well 😕
