The irony too is that Paul only respected Richard after Richard showed that he had the same killer instinct to protect his family like Paul did. Paul wasn't really a bad person, and I think that showed in his response to getting manhandled by Richard. A lesser man would have taken it out on his family, but Paul realized in that moment how sincere Richard's feelings for his daughter were. By the end, Paul is talking to Richard like his own son-in-law and Richard seems to really love Paul in spite, or maybe because of, them coming to blows. It's an amazing character arc for the two of them

He wouldn't have hurt Paul unless Paul actually hurt Tommy or Julia but he wouldn't. He was just drunk and upset. I think Paul actually helped Richard and Richard helped Paul. They would sit awake at night and talk for hours. It was a thing of honor between former soldiers.

@@simle6010 Richard was trained (very well) to kill people...not fight them at Princeton bareknuckle boxing night.
and then one morning as Papa Paul emerged from his drunken slumber only to find his daughter entertaining Richard. Papa Paul soon experience a near death experience.

That's great character development. Went from hating the guy and calling him a side show freak to at the end saying "you dont come home looking like that"

I was so happy to see Paul on the porch when Richard, in his death, joined the family he never had in his life. Two troubled characters finally made peace in one of the saddest and most cathartic scenes ever shown on television. It's amazing that you are a part of that moment, Mark!

I liked the part in that scene when Julia looked at her father asking if it was ok for her to go to Richard, and he nodded affirmatively with a smile, finally giving Julia and Richard his blessing and accepting them as a couple and especially accepting Richard as part of his family.

Not really. He killed for money and didn't know why sometimes. Didn't care. At one point, he said he killed 67 men. After that, went on to kill about a dozen or two more. He was a good man to those he loved and who loved him, sure, but he wasn't going to heaven when he died.
