House reef snorkeling in Vilamendhoo Resort

  • I have been to the Vilamendhoo Resort twice in 2014, each of which was a two week stay. The mesmerizing discovery of its beautiful house reef made me decide to return so soon to this island. (I thought in those days that the corals in the Maldives were generally still suffering from the breaching damages.)
The dense and vivid coral reef sorrounds the resort completely, only within a few steps of the beach. There is no artificial ugly reef which many Maldivian islands have nowadays constructed in order to prevent the beach erosion and which unfortunately and fatally disturbs the scenic sight from the beach towards the horizon.
The underwater world around this house reef is just nothing but marvelous. In addtion to the millions of colourful tropcial fish, you will almost always meet sharks and turtles. By participating in the resort excursions, you will also be able to swim with manta rays and whale sharks, and as far as I have experienced (6 times) the chances of swimming with them are 100%.
It was rather worrying and disappointing, however, that on my second visit to the resort I was not able to see any turtle on the house reef, whereas on the first visit sighting them was just a daily sure event. Also, to be honest, the condition of the corals seemed to have degraded over the half-year period. The beauty of the Maldives may not be eternal.
Filmed in May and December 2014.

Nice video and a historic document. Today, in 2017, nearly all the corals you show in this video are dead. A drama.

From what I hear and read, Vilamendhoo must be the resort island which has one of the best house reefs in the Maldives. Easily accessible from the beach, and interesting all around the island in terms of creatures you can find. And the best part of the house reef is at the farthest tip of the island, which I was never able to explore in fear of the very strong current. One thing that I really regret not having filmed is a huge yellow leopard spotted moray eel (I do not know its exact name), which was swimming over this house reef. (My camera got broken just before she appeared.)

Just returned from Vilamendhoo and there is very little live coral to see. Not sure if its people traffic or nature? Still lots of fish.

Just snorkeling around the house reef. There are also snorkeling excursions from Vilamendhoo resort for swimming with Whale Sharks and Manta Rays. I participated twice each, and did swim with them (its almost a guaranteed success. I have videos for those on youtube, too.)
