So, I'm a 61-year-old lady whose Dad did tree work on the side, his entire life.
We heated the entire house with a wood burning stove in the 1970s.
He & mom bought 75 acres of land in the early 1950s, so wood was super easy to come by. Not to mention all the tree work he did.
All these years, I've had NO IDEA what the glob of tree is called on the trunk of a tree, but I've certainly seen & wondered about them my entire life!
I've always thought they were quite interesting!
Now I know what they're called and some info about them! I always wondered if it was full of bugs or ants of some type, and apparently that can cause the burl. And fungus.
Thanks for giving me something to learn new today!
Great Channel!! 🌳 🌲 🌳 🌲
Oh Wow! You have burls!!??!!! ;) Yeah, those are a very good thing, especially for us turners. All the best to you.
Spectacular. Great and valuable detail on working with fragile burl, and beautiful shape and finish. Thanks!
The bowl is possible the most beautiful and most figured thing I have ever seen. I'm glad you decided to pick up those oak burls!
Reallly enjoy watching this guy,,,,,,sooo many people who are good turners seem to forget that they were beginners too and they sought info,,,,this guy does really great at explaining what and why,,,thanks
THAT'S WILD!! It has such a living appearance and one could spend hours just talking about it and all the differences!! Nice effort!!
Just stunning, Kent! Thanks for sharing your talent and knowledge so freely!
Great show guys as always. Mark is a true inspiration to us all. It’s a pleasure to call him a friend.
Loved the whole process ... but especially the ending wherein you mention making your own shellac. I agree completely that the home made shellac is SO much nicer than any store bought shellac. Thanks again ... I truly enjoy your straight forward, simple teaching style. Happy turning!! Geoff
I learned a lot about turning oak , great info and beautiful bowl.Thanks.
Beautiful outcome. Your patience was rewarded. It's nice to see a video of someone who knows how to use a bowl gouge.
Amazing work and an incredibly beautiful bowl! Congratulations on your bravery!
A beautiful piece. Your detailed explanations of everything you were doing is number one. The info necessary to do this is all there. But beyond me. LOL
That is a really cool piece. It just demonstrates what nature can give us to play with! Well done.
Thanks for all the useful info. Love bark inclusions and grains of the wood.
Great technical demonstration and info, and a beautiful finished bowl. Burls like this don't come up very often but when they do they're worth the effort.
I have a couple of Elm burls laying around. I think I’m gonna go to the shop today and start doing something fun with them.
Great Video! I'm a new subscriber and look forward to watching your future lessons on woodworking! Keep up the good work. You are a master artist! 👍😷👍
This is the most beautiful bowl I’ve seen. What a wonderful, talented wood worker you are!!
This is one of the most, if not THE most beautiful turned bowl I have ever seen.
Thank you so much for showing that such a difficult piece of wood can get turned, what kind of problems are hiding in it and how to solve them.
Liked and subscribed! 👍❤
Wow, thank you! Thanks for the kind words and for subscribing. All the best to you and Happy Turning!
A masterclass in woorturning. Lots of skill and practice on show here. I particularly liked the running commentary added after the video was made - some very useful tips also, some of which I was aware of but also a few new ones learnt. I always remember my woodturning teacher telling me to look at the form, the shape, keep the curve continious and even, no bumps or flats. Great result. Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you very much. Yes, watch that form. ;) Happy Turning!
Absolutely beautiful..The oak is always really rich in colour, but having the burl and the live edge has made this even prettier 😀
Geesh what a great video.
Well scripted, informative, really really good.
As a new turner this was really fun to watch. Thanks!
Oh thank you so much! I'm glad you liked this video. All the best to you!
your prediction and preventive measures taken to be able to complete the bowl show the true skill you have to be a master. Thank you for sharing your skill and looking forward to more.
I have watched and enjoyed a ton of your vids, but not until this project did I realize just how good you really are. You are truly an inspiration.
Thank You!!!
Absolutely gorgeous, Kent. Lots of nervous moments around 35 minutes but the end product is just beautiful. I’ve learnt where the expression ‘gaffer’ tape comes from, too - I never knew it was a movie term, but hey ho. By the way, that’s the first time I’ve heard someone refer to a half inch bowl gouge as small or smaller - I’ve just bought an Ellsworth / Irish grind 1/2 inch gouge and it seems at least twice the size of my 3/8 inch one! Excellent stuff anyhow, thank you v much. Best Hugh
LOL, that's funny. Well, after beating up large bowl blanks with a 5/8" and 3/4" gouge, the 1/2" looks and feels delicate. ;) Happy Turning!
Thanks for explaining what and why you are doing. Lots of really excellent turners don't give information that is helpful to those of us just learning or expanding our skills. This is a truly amazing piece.
This video and other turners, have piqued MY interest! Now how do I make them FAST and CHEAP for the relatives by Christmas? LOL
This is the first time i have seen your youtube i love burl's and i think your a excellent instructor ,will scribe and follow you for sure.
That is an absolutely beautiful piece! Great video and explanation of what you were doing throughout the entire project.
Great job turning as well as explaining. I relived a similar experience with a maple burl which now sits on our dining room table.
Sounds great! It's fun having these pieces around isn't it? Happy Turning!
Just getting started with wood turning Picked up a90 craftsman wood lathe 12 in. In great shape and works well. I'm 81 and looking forward to this new hoppy. Your videos are great
That is awesome Don! Thanks and Remember; persistent, patient practice will yield the bowls you imagine creating! All the best to you and Happy Turning!
Wow! Excellent explanations!! I learned quite a bit, and thoroughly enjoyed listening. Been turning for about 2 years now and love it!
That is a beautiful creation. Once again so much knowledge passed on to all of us although some of that I watched from behind the couch. Thank you and looking forward to more.
Great project but even more your commentary is extraordinary and helpful to us who are striving to improve. Thanks!
Glad to hear that! I thought about doing the "silent" videos, actually did a couple, but there is too much worth sharing. Glad you like these. Thanks and Happy Turning!
I think I found a new hobby! Thank you for the lesson. Beautiful bowl!
Awesome! Thank you! Be careful, wood bowl turning is addictive! ;) Enjoy and Happy Turning!
Fab bowl, such character in the wood. Great job, thanks for posting.
WOW! What a stunning result...a true work of art.
It was a long video, but as a relative novice I really appreciated it and learned a lot about how to turn a bowl like this safely and to produce a beautiful result!
Thank you very much! If you liked this one, I have many other videos that will help you greatly. Happy Turning!
You're not a wood turner (although you are and an incredible one at that!) you're an artist. What an incredible bowl and want an inspiration you are...
Kent again nice explanation on what you are turning and how you go about things. Great info nice work. Thanks for the explanation of my previous question about the use of the extension on the tailstock quill. Thanks again.
I have been latterly holding my breath through this entire movie and enjoyed it thoroughly . Good job !
I'm smiling. I was holding my breath while I was turning this. LOL Happy Turning!
This was very educational!! Thank you!
Really great project. I have a big live oak that came down this year and this gave me some more ideas. Thanks!
Absolutely Beautiful! You never know what you'll find inside. Nice job.
I'd once like to find a pot with Euros inside to pay for a bigger lathe. What a monster machine you have, Kent.
Great video ...You did a wonderful job of teaching us all about the process of making this bowl Thank You Ohh Love the bowl.
Dude, you are a great teacher! I love how you tell and show how to do it. You do so many things that make so much sense to me. Keep up the Great work
Beautiful bowl and very informative video. I am amazed you were able to keep it together thru the process. Thank you
What a beautiful bowl. I have tried several natural edge bowls but I have difficulty with the bark coming loose and off. Many times I cut out instead down into the bottom. thanks for this video.
A beautiful piece of art, I’d love to have a bowl like this on my table xx
That was so fun to watch and experience through sight and sound. Thank you!
Joy. Pgh. PA
so happy to have come across your channel! You have great teaching skills and am thankful your sharing all this with us! such beautiful work!
Absolutely awesome thanks for sharing stay safe keep them coming
Incredible! A lot of work in that one
Stunning, absolutly stunning... I did a cherry burl with bark inculusions and I can appreciately the work that went in to the bowl. Beautiful work!!!
Really really inspiring! I’m just starting out with wood turning and wow you’ve given me so much to look forward to! I really hope I can turn something like this one day!
You can do it! Remember persistent, patient practice will yield the bowls you are imaging right now! All the best to you and Happy Turning!
That is a gorgeous bowl, CA glue was certainly your friend on this project that and amazing skills.
The expertise used to turn the interrupted cut of varying hardness is amazing. The morse taper extension in the tailstock is commonly called a drill extension and is available from machine shop suppliers ($20-$30) with different morse tapers in the hole and the shank. This lathe has standard #2 morse tapers so getting 2 extensions with a #2 morse taper shank combined with #1 morse taper bore (hole) effectively allows turning very small projects like pens in larger lathes using small lathe centres and drives. Larger bore than shank adapters are also available for larger accessories but have to be used with caution because large accessories can overload the lathe.
Another work of art Kent!! I made coasters out of Live Oak I brought back from Florida. It got me addicted to woodworking. I love burl wood.
That is a beautiful ball and I was sitting here watching with my husband and said oh honey I want one of those and I don't want very much but that is gorgeous
Masterful workmanship. You were one with your wood. You felt every layer.
Wow what a Bowl I love the way you share The how to as you make that bowl I really enjoy watching have a great day
Great work! You make it look so easy, although we know you've put countless hours into practice. Wish my bowls looked so good!
that is just down right some good looking stuff very nice glad I got to see it Thanks
Napaka ganda nman sir piece.of art. Project.alohome woodturning from the phillipines
Wow. Amazing!!! I’m down here on the west coast of Florida and we are surrounded by these live oaks. I’m just getting into turning and I’ve been a woodworker for 20+ years and was always told down here that the live oaks were not good for woodworking. I’m originally from New England area. So I really didn’t know much about live oaks but I have to say I’m pretty impressed with what I’ve seen so far. I’m purchasing a couple of your courses this weekend. And I’m looking forward to really start to master wood turning. Thank you
Thank you, and Welcome Jason! Well, the live oaks were go enough to build ships back in the day. I think a few bowls should be a piece of cake. ;) All the best to you and Happy Turning!
absolute fantastic commentry , beautiful workmanship a credit to you , I hope I can master this one soon !! maybe a bit more practice first
Yes it was great to whach a video with no music drowning out the commentary like a lot do and all the television channels should take a lesson from you well done
Thanks! I don't have the best hearing and music over someone talking is the worst! I can't understand how others are ok with it at times. LOL Happy Turning!
The dangerous burl live edge bowl was fantastic my friend i have often wanted to try doing one you have really inspired me I have got got to try it plus I shaped a bowl gouge into a swept back one and have never been able to master it but I am sure I can do it now thanks a lot you are brilliant
Nice love the look of this bowl it looks like even with coring cuter you have a lot of hours in this piece great job
Leaned so much again Kent now I want to give a birl a whirl. Thanks for taking the time to edit the video well but then again, to take the time and effort to do your narration afterwards. So much more informative than the "watch this" types of videos.
Scary beautiful bowl. Get job on the turning and staying safe. I'm learning so much. Who says an old dog can't learn? 83 and turning daily.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience.
