Chiatura is a town in Georgia that seems stuck in old Soviet times with the most terrifyingly old, rusty cable cars which are still in use! // ☕️ Get 50% OFF your first order bit.ly/tradenat... and use our code karanate
Travel vlog 548 | Chiatura, Georgia | Country #79 | The locals take these old cable cars straight up a mountain on the reg. We thought it sounded like an adventure, and we were right! We (dramatically) rode the cars STRAIGHT up and back down the mountain, then finished our Georgia road trip at the awesome Katskhi "pillar church."

Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, we got married June 2013 and quickly caught the travel bug! We started “travel hacking” and taking more trips together and finally decided we wanted to travel for one year. After 2 years of saving $ and travel hacking over 2 million miles and points, we sold our cars and apartment and left home January 10, 2016. We started this UA-cam channel to share our experiences with friends and family, then decided we really liked vlogging and traveling. So we extended our 1 year trip to THREE years :) Now we have a goal of traveling to 100 countries before 2020! We are incredibly thankful to do something we love every day. :)
sorry guys but I think the Aussie has to stay with the team he fits in perfectly he's a funny character
I was terrified to watch you riding in that shaky cable car. My friends who were husband and wife and "travel obsessed" just like Kara and Nate died after falling from Taft point in Yosemite National Park 5 days ago.
My request to everybody including Kara and Nate reading this comment- Adventure is great but please demarcate the tiny line between being adventurous and gambling with life. Please travel safely.
I request everyone including Kara and Nate to pray for the departed soul of my Friends who always loved travelling like us. Please also pray for their parents and relatives to have enough strength to overcome the current situation.
Advait satya Oh, I read about it yesterday and it is so sad. I went through their Instagram posts and they seemed a really nice and adventurous couple. My condolences and I also hope that people would think more about their safety after hearing such stories. I think Kara and Nate has been quite careful so far.
Advait satya I agree. The worst can happen. I. So sorry to hear about your friends.
I heard about that in the news, its very sad. My condolences to you and friends and family for your loss. You are right, there is a line which should not be crossed.
We all love Kara and Nate and want them to stay safe.
❤️❤️🙏🏻🙏🏻

I was afraid just watching you guys on the cable car. Especially when you got to the top and had to get off onto that flimsy platform. Anxiety inducing! Glad you made it safe and sound.
I get nervous all over again when I watch it!!!
I was low key scared too but then I realized that if something had happened this video wouldn’t have been posted
Taylor Parry hdggfdsxz
I was so scared to death for you guys but then I just thought, " You know what, they have uploaded this vlog so they are probably gonna be just fine."😂🙈
Love you guys❤
Hahaha exactly! Sorry to worry you🙊
@@KaraandNate oh I enjoy watching you people do this kind of stuff. I have dreams of travelling around the world and this just got added to my list. 😅😍
Lol! ‘Spyhouse’ coffee. 😆 5:12 Kara “I’m trying to say something positive.” Nate: “it’s death down there!”
"It works, until it doesn't"
Um.....NO i dont think you could pay me to get on those cable cars!!!!! But Kara love how sweetly you waved bye wen you got to tge bottom even tho its scary ride :) yall are so sweet!!!
You misspelled, “Ya’ll have no sense of self preservation “.
LOL! Im Georgian and I wouldn't even ride on that but cudos to you guys!
😂😱
Why not?
I am Georgian and I tried it twice :D
@@TazoVikingishvili Maybe when I get back home next I'll give it a go :)

You guys are, without a doubt, braver than me. It would would hard pass for me. Thank you for being so brave, and bringing these vlogs to us!
Yay, I’m so happy you’re finally getting a coffee sponsor, you definitely deserve it!!
I’m surprised that they still operate those cable cars there. They must do some maintenance and checks on them, hopefully. Maybe volunteers do all that, coz it certainly doesn’t look like it gets any funding from local authorities... never seen anything that old and rusty to be allowed to still operate! I wouldn’t get into one of those! Again- I’m glad you survived! 😂
Probably nothing wrong with them, they just look scary.
All of 11 still in operation cable cars receive their maintenance as daily, weekly and monthly :) They are designed in Georgia back then.
Charlie loves that phrase doesn’t he ?🤣🤣
I can double watch your vlogs and not get bored, and that is saying a lot.
Hello from a Thai fan. Have been a subscriber since your first Thailand trips. Very professional, open minded, adventurous, humble, optimistic, humourous and world cultures embracing travellers. Really admire your positivity and never stop improving on your blogs. Great stuff. Sawadee ka!
Khob khun kaaaa!❤❤❤❤
That was a bit questionable guys!!! How crazy that they’re still running those?!! The monastery was so cool, wish y’all could’ve gone up!! Good luck returning that car, it got beat up🤕!!
Stay you 😘
OMG guys - that cable car ride was something else !!! Kara we're with you I was sat on the edge of the chair watching it - think I may have even held my breath a bit LOL. You're braver than me !! Loved the drone shots at the end - Yet another fabulous vlog - thanks again from Chris & Marianne 😆
Thanks guys ❤️😁
When I first saw that cable car, I audibly gasped. That thing looks like a blue box of tears and terror. People have probably written all over the inside walls of that car to keep their mind off their own fear. Nope, not even Charlie's charming self could get me to ride one of those scary things. You guys are far braver than I'll ever be. Please always be safe. ❤
When I need to escape from the chaos that is all around me I go to Kara and Nate. True story. Thanks for helping me maintain my sanity.
I paused for a moment to check out Trade's coffee website. How cool is it that they match you to your perfect brew? I might have to buy something from this site, except I'm not sure if they have K-Cups. Very cool regardless.
That looked sooo scary 😱
The Holistic Trainer I would never go on that
I agree on that one
That coffee scene!!!!!!😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍 My breath caught when I watched it. I just LOVE watching people make pour over coffee so much. Especially with no words just the quiet sound of the water dripping and pouring. Gah! I might rewatch it.
Soooo glad you enjoyed it 😁❤️☕
I won’t even go on the fancy new cable cars, so you know there’s NO WAY I would ever go on this! Hahaha. 🤪
The reaction on karas face was priceless in the cable car
I come back to this Kara and Nate video often. One of my favorites. ❤
Wow! We love how moments like that happen so quick! You were terrified, he was just doing his job and BAM! You're in a death cage 😲
5:49 - Kara just wants to cry and get off the cable car. Charlie is just thinking WTF did we get ourselves into.
I would have been catatonic in that thing! Yay for a coffee sponsor, fits y’all so well.
Glad you each made it out in one piece! Looks like a fun experience and they are still running for a reason if the locals use them frequently
hi, not true about the article, the monk didnt die. I was there last september 2017, visited the same place and I got lucky to have met the same monk who lived there. He was there, not sure if he was still residing there but according to some locals I met I was told that he still continues to live there. I recognized him from old photos from website and papers and I got the chance to meet him in person at the bottom of the rock. Meaning he didnt die.
Go to Meteora in Greece u can actually visit those monasteries on top of the mountains
The way he looks at you in this video when your talking about him waking up before you. Ahhh soooo sweet. ❤
GOOD MORNING FROM SUNNY CALIFORNIA. Thanks for the wonderful video and once again you have kept it lively and fresh.
Travel More! Worry Less!
Good morning 🌞Thank you ❤
The way Nate looks at Kara. True love!
I have been watching you guys for a while now and you have inspired me so much! So, I just want to say that your videography keeps getting better and better!! I love you guys! Can't wait to see where you guys are heading next!
The monastery at the end reminds me of Meteora, Greece.
Wow you're so right! Just googled it😍
@@KaraandNate you should really visit Meteora
How is Nate’s hair always so freshly cut??? 😱 especially since they’re always on the road, gotta respect that man ❤️
I want to ride that cable car!!!.. It will be scary but FUN!.. Great video I'm glad that Charlie was with you guys on the Georgia Adventure! I will miss him after his gone, but I do love you both! I read on your "Sunday Summary #68" you will be in Chiang Mai, Thailand for a month and get caught on the vlogs and work!!.. Have fun guys!!!
I like the vlogs that include friends or especially this aussie guy! It seems more real, like your actually travelling and not doing it as a job. Still really love and appreciate all your other vlogs ❤️
Yay! I just ordered that coffee, and got the 50% off! Thank you! Can hardly wait to taste what you guys were tasting!😁👍❤️
As to the rusty cable car, I just have one question for you:
why? I mean... just ... just... why? LOL XD
Thank you for posting while having some downtime. It hit me, no more Charlie for a while. The three of you together crack me up!
Coffee and their smiles are a trade mark for them almost 💖😂
That Cable car looks the most insecure cable car I have seen
Daddy ( cable car) issues?
HAHA! There was actual fear in Kara's eyes!! I want to try the ride omg!
Good on ya for the cable car ride, it was apparently built to last, lol! Have also had moments in my travels when I just gave it up to fate! Love your positive attitudes, and Kara's smiling face! Keep going you guys, love from Canada!
That wasn't so scary, except for the old delapitaded part. I rode the cable cars in Santiago and we stopped in the middle, bouncing for no apparent reason and like 500 feet up, the car going in the opposite direction was just sitting there with six people bouncing three feet. Up and down. I thought I was going to die. The locals saw my face and just laughed and assured me it was all just normal.
All of 11 still in operation cable cars receive their maintenance as daily, weekly and monthly :) They are designed in Georgia back then. The one you were on is operational since 1967. All the cable cars built in Georgia from 1953 to 1990 were designed in Georgia in the Institute "Sakgiproshakht", the institution resposible for designing first coal mines and mining transportation, freight cable cars, then from 1953 passenger cable cars throughout Soviet Union. Exclusively Urban, Leisure purpose lines, none of them were in ski resorts. Head engineers were Vakhtang Lejava and Giorgi Pantsulaia. Great video once again! I love how you guys are always excited and so well mannered/open minded! Keep rockin guys! Greetings from the Netherlands🤗
Glad you enjoyed it 😁❤
Fabulous, scary, don't think Sherrie would ever get in that cable car. If I was a monk up that pillar, I think erosion would be a worry, looks like the top could fall off in a few years. Love this series, one of your best 😊
Internet: cable car built 70 years ago and not sufficiently maintained since.
You: let's ride it...omg scareiest experience ever!
A few moments later...
Let's get back in thw cable car!
I felt that car ride with you. wonderful episode. I'm getting to know Georgia thru you
❤❤❤
I'm going this summer to Georgia. I am now building this in to my travel plans.
Holy smokes that looked so scary! I wonder if any accidents have ever happened on that metal death machine lol. Great video! ❤️
I was dead when the cable car started moving the minute the door shot. I’m still LOLing
My legs got weak watching this cable car ... I'm so afraid of heights 😁 Glad you all made it up and back safely. 😉
Now that was interesting never seen Kara so close to the edge ha ha always liked those Monistries on the top of those little hills they look so good hate to sleep alk anyway stay safe see ya
The fact that they ride it themselves gives me a bit more confidence. Surely if it was that risky they would not take it themselves.
I gave up coffee 3 weeks ago.
I read coffe has cafestol which not good for cholesterol.
I never sleep properly if I drink coffee.
Still they say there are some health benefits.
Personally I'll try to avoid it in future.
Thanks for sharing.
Bye Karan and Nath. 😊❤👍
Too bad you didn't try the second cable car that is right opposite the blue one. We were in Chiatura last month (our 2nd trip to Georgia in two months, and this one was just for Chiatura). The cable car you went on is the smaller one. The larger one looks a bit more shabby but has an attendant inside who operates it. That one takes you on the opposite side of the hill that has a viewpoint, a large cross and spectacular views. They are scary but we rode them a lot of times both at night and during the day. It wasn't as scary as it looks :) Your Airbnb experience from the previous video is really great, encouraging me to make a third trip soon.
Kara....so funny. Your face reminded me of when you flew to Lukla on your Mt. Everest trek...same face as being on that small plane. I think I would have to wear a diaper if I was to ride that Cable car...not looking safe to me. LOL you two....
It was just as scary as Lukla!!! You'll see in a few short days!!!!
@@KaraandNate I believe you...its been raining a lot in Lukla and they say rain most of next week,....curious if we will be able to fly to Lukla or if there will be lots of delays. Thanks again you two...D-Day tomorrow......
Just read on atlastobscura.com that the cable cars are no longer operating. Awesome that you guys caught video of them in action before they were shut down!
I'll take your word for it! ORDERED MY COFFEE!
Oh Lord! My legs got weak just watching you three😳😫I would die! You’re so brave!!!
When you are on streets in Georgia, it is already terrifiying, they drove Moskvich cars of 70s with speeds more than 80mph. It is really terrifiying and much more than this cable car.
We went to Chiatura but didn't go up in the metal box of death haha! By the way did you see a straw hat and a pair of sunglasses by the pillar? I left mine there in July (Alex) 😫😫 Your Aussie friend needs to learn a new word haha, must have said 'didi madloba' 100 times in the last few episodes! Thanks for sharing!
Looks like they finally built an entirely new cable car system, new buildings and everything.
Watching all the locals judge u while vlogging is so funny
NO WAY!!!! Nope, never!! You guys are BRAVE!!
loving the vlogs .bn here since the frst vlog glad to say tht finally the channel is getting the numbers it deserves .
Thank you so much! 😁
Me and My partner recently discovered you guys and wow! You're both truly amazing at what you do, watching your videos (every morning for the last week) has inspired us to make our own travel adventures which we are now planning thanks to you! :) Great vlog as always, sending love from the UK :)x
At 0:11 I was so shook when I saw SPYHOUSE as a Minnesota (Minneapolis) native it’s so cool to see that you guys are drinking a local roast half way around the world!
That's pretty crazy!!!❤️
Amazing, I'd love to go on one of these as an enthusiast of old railways and ropeways!
Thats why they removed all the old cable cars in Tblisi ...for safety reasons😅 I'm so loving your Georgia vlogs😍 and even though I said like 20 times already: I can not wait to go back next spring 😍
2 of old Tbilisi cable cars are already restored :)
“Aw! That’s just death down there!” I’m HOWLING! I’ve replayed that bit multiple times. I cannot stop laughing! 🤣😂🤣😂
Coffee in hand. Boarding card. Might have to watch the balance of the video in flight😊. Hope everyone is having a great day
I could SMELL. That coffee through my phone screen yum!!!!!🌎🌎🌎🌺
"Watch your step, there's a mountain."
😂🤣😂🤣😂
That ad convinced me 😄 already ordered my coffee! Thanks guys ❤️
Hahaha woohoo! Which one did you get?? Enjoy ☕❤️
Kara and Nate its called LYON 🦁
The best thing about your videos is you go well off the beaten path.
👋 from Australia! That cable car does not look stable at all! You guys are brave 😂 Love it!
The nice thing about the monk's living arrangement is that he never has to mow the lawn. : ))
You guys so funny in terrifying cable car and laugh trough the way 😆😆 i cant! They should put the station and cable car as a national landmark. Coz its so old and partically ruin. But amazing experince. Lol.
Love from Indonesia xoxo
I cracked up editing it, but in the moment it was NOT funny!😂
Great video guys. Checked out your website too. Awesome.
Oh my! That looked super scary! Caught myself screaming, don’t touch or hold on to anything in there eeeek 😂
😂😂😂😂
That really was the most rickety thing you have done!!!
I find it really cool how you guys saw a monistay and monks and stuff because in class a couple of days ago we wer3 pert3nding to be in a monistayr and pert3nding to be monks
Guys go to Poland! Kraków. Zakopane. Wieliczka.
💓💓🇵🇱🇵🇱
I'm going to Krakow and Zakopane this June! :D
Keep discovering more videos of you from Georgia ,so cool
Kara is so Brave!! I feel her fear!!!! LOL... I don't know what was worst to watch, this cable car ride or the plane from Kathmandu to the hiking trails to Everest base camp!!
the step from the cable car to the platform up top is terrifying!!!
That cable car was so scary
AGREED🙊
Spyhouse is a local Minnesotan coffee! So glad you got to enjoy it as much as we do! :)
it was AWESOME😍😍😍☕
Wow... You guys are amazing!!! Hope that one day i can travel like you.....
❤💜💛
I really like your video's
Greetings from the Netherlands.

you tree are a lot braver then I am. I would of turned around just seeing the condition of the station.Would of thought it was abandoned. Then again it is for the Vlog!!!!!!
No, no, no, no, no, no way, just no! I can't believe you actually went in those cable cars! They look so scary!!!
Kara: “I’m trying to say something positive”
Nate: “Oh wow it’s pure death down there!”😂
Oh I would have been finding another way down that mountain 🤣
OMG that Spyhouse coffee is from my local coffee shop in Minneapolis, MN!! I love it!
Boo!! I rode both. The second one actually has an operator inside of it that locks the doors. I’m surprised you didn’t mention the station is so dilapidated it has a mosaic of Lenin and Stalin both! Chiatura was by far my favorite city ever.
You timed this to come out on the PERFECT day! That was Halloween scary! You have definitely found your perfect sponsor! Coffee!!!
I didn't even realize that!!! Happy Halloween! Ahhhh and I know we were AO excited 😁☕
I don't even like shiny, new cable cars. I pretty much hold my breath and feel like vomiting the whole way up lol. No way I'd get on that thing!
