Having watched Croatia in both 1998 and 2018 I would say that the 98 side was more talented, but the 18 gen was more physically fit. A lot of the game's evolution in the last 2 decades has to do with the physical training (speed and endurance). If Suker's side had the training programs that Modric & Co. enjoyed, they would have been champions in both 1996 and 1998.

I'm not a football fan but I watched these games as a little kid, I had no choice, the grownups controlled the remote 😁 and 8:35 is my favorite moment in football, ever, and one of top moments in sport. Crazy bold attempt from halfcourt but he ALMOST made it, Schmeichel managed to tip it out - and then a mutual sign of respect 👍 - such a moment, pure sport!

I fell in love with the Croatian team during this tournament from day one. They were awesome throughout. Then in France, they were so unlucky in the semis against France in 98. I think if they'd played that final, they'd also have beat Brazil. Such a classy team of players.

EURO '96. and WC '98. were the peaks of this generation. We didn't qualify for EURO '00 and in Korea/Japan majority of this players were 34-35 and some didn't even play football anymore.

I remember this Euro96, I expected Portugal and Croatia to go really far, both have been eliminated in quarter finals. In the Portuguese case really unlucky as they fired 20 shots, and attacked the whole game, but a sensational lob by Poborsky gave the Czechs the semi final birth. After that Portugal played 2 finals, and 3 semi finals in the last 5 Euros..I wish u guys in Croatia also good luck for the future.. 🙏 from a portuguese football friend⚽🇵🇹

This tournament was the peak of the original Vatreni in terms of the quality of the football they played. Came through qualifying on top in a group with Baggio's Italy, put on this brilliant second half and were unlucky/stupid in the quarter-final against the Germans. The eternal question remains what would've happened had the coach Blazevic decided to play for top spot in the last group game against Portugal. I'd love to have seen the reaction of fans and the football public had a coach of England, Italy, Germany etc. made such a huge mistake. He copped heat for it in Croatia but still kept his job. Two years later the team had a great run at the WC but did so without playing too great. Blazevic made some changes, by the end of the group stage he dropped Prosinecki again, giving the midfield more balance and being prepared to outfox teams rather than try to play them off the park. Real pity we never got to see Boksic (apart from 45 minutes in the opener at Euro 96) in this team at a major tourney. He didn't play his best for Croatia but he could've been the difference in some big games. The Modric generation similarly played its best football before the WC final run in 2018. For a lot of people the performance in the group stage at Euro 2016 was the best football ever played by a Croatian national team. Unfortunately, they ran into Portugal in the second round where Santos was simply too smart for Croatia's non-league standard coach Cacic. They just killed the game, pressed Modric and Rakitic high, isolated Perisic and the Croatian coach sat there and watched it all unfold. From memory his first change came with 2-3 minutes to go in the 90. Under Dalic at Russia things finally came together, Rakitic was played deep and Modric pushed up into an attacking midfield role. Brozovic was played in a position that most suited him and these changes were key. The rest was a bit of luck and an unbelievable spirit within the team. Comparing the two teams I still favour the 1996-98 team. I think it was more well-rounded. Modric the best individual from both generations but generally there was more quality in the team in 1996-98 with Suker, Boban, Asanovic, Prosinecki, Jarni, Stanic, Bilic... The original Vatreni were a genuine mix of the old Hajduk Split and Dinamo Zagreb schools. The more refined Dinamo style (Suker, Boban, Prosinecki) combined with the more robust, direct, physical-type produced by Hajduk (Boksic, Jarni, Asanovic, the whole defence). The 2018 generation was very much a product of Dinamo's school with the odd standout coming from elsewhere.
After a 24 hour flight from Sydney , we travelled from London to Sheffield for this game on the first full day of our honeymoon in 1996. The previous day we jumped on an open top bus to witness English and Scottish supporters chant at each other across Trafalgar Square. All marriages should start this well.
I think this '96/'98 Croatia team is even better than the 2018 World Cup one: Suker is a unique striker, plus we had a better defence. Also we had more players with technical skills who could pass the ball.
Suker was a gem, but as for defense I think we just finally dialed in with youngsters against France. If Petkovic would return to his old self, sku would be limit in Qatar

But Modrić's quality is on another level altogether, not to mention also that Perišić is the finest winger we've produced. A combination of the two teams picked with players in their prime would be unstoppable though.

Man these were the Glory days of danish and Croatian football.. iconic players for both sides. Both teams could of won Gold if they had a touch of luck as the skill set, grit and heart were there. When small nations like this dominate it truly is something special. We could only admire the players of this time. Some legends of the sport.

Ja sam imao tu srecu gledati ga 2 puta uzivo i to izvedju 1989 i 1990. Dva puta na Grbavici protiv Zelje i na Kosevu 1990/91 protiv Sarajeva. Takodjer ga vidio sa svojih 12ak godina "face to face"u Holiday Inn-u u Sarajevu (prije tekme sa Zeljom) i dobio autogram od njega, Andeja Panadica, Shalle i Igora Cvitanovica. Cvita je te sezone po 1. puta zaigrao za Dinamo. Usao sa klupe u 88. minuti na maksimiru protiv Sarajeva (6-0) i zabio 2 gola u 2 minute!!! Da li si ti iz Sarajeva? ja sam dio djetinjstva proveo na Grbavici (od 3 do 13te).... Skoro da nisam propustio utakmicu na Grbavici, iako oduvijek Dinamovac, zbog cega sam dobio toliko puta batina u istom Sarajevu ;p

And the world began to appreciate Suker, who was sublime here. Schmeichel (and now his son) must still have nightmares of the Croatian spectre.
Tu smo rasturili Dansku a gle čuda sa,o godinu dana kasnije upravo zahvaljujući Danskoj a prije svega Schmeichelu smo otišli u Francusku ( spasio nasu kvalifikacijma svojim obranama u zadnjoj tekemi protiv Grčke). Što ti je sudbina.

This was my first ever euro to watch when i was 9 and the games were soo entertaining..i named 1 of my first childhood friends Boban cause they looked almost alike and cause we played in the same team and he was a striker and scored so many goals...will never forget this croatian team!!!

Man these were the Glory days of danish and Croatian football.. iconic players for both sides. Both teams could of won Gold if they had a touch of luck as the skill set, grit and heart were there. When small nations like this dominate it truly is something special. We could only admire the players of this time. Some legends of the sport.

Men when i was kid, Boban was my idol. God i loved to watch him in milan or croatia.
Ja sam imao tu srecu gledati ga 2 puta uzivo i to izvedju 1989 i 1990. Dva puta na Grbavici protiv Zelje i na Kosevu 1990/91 protiv Sarajeva. Takodjer ga vidio sa svojih 12ak godina "face to face"u Holiday Inn-u u Sarajevu (prije tekme sa Zeljom) i dobio autogram od njega, Andeja Panadica, Shalle i Igora Cvitanovica. Cvita je te sezone po 1. puta zaigrao za Dinamo. Usao sa klupe u 88. minuti na maksimiru protiv Sarajeva (6-0) i zabio 2 gola u 2 minute!!! Da li si ti iz Sarajeva? ja sam dio djetinjstva proveo na Grbavici (od 3 do 13te).... Skoro da nisam propustio utakmicu na Grbavici, iako oduvijek Dinamovac, zbog cega sam dobio toliko puta batina u istom Sarajevu ;p

My goodness. Croatia's golden generation in its finest form as they began to hit their stride towards France 98, which they came close to winning as a debutante nation. And the world began to appreciate Suker, who was sublime here. Schmeichel (and now his son) must still have nightmares of the Croatian spectre.
Tu smo rasturili Dansku a gle čuda sa,o godinu dana kasnije upravo zahvaljujući Danskoj a prije svega Schmeichelu smo otišli u Francusku ( spasio nasu kvalifikacijma svojim obranama u zadnjoj tekemi protiv Grčke). Što ti je sudbina.
Ne samo to, nego smo ko picke igrali s rezervnom postavom protiv portugala jer je picka ciro isa na njemacku umisto cesku i usput izbacili tako dansku

This was my first ever euro to watch when i was 9 and the games were soo entertaining..i named 1 of my first childhood friends Boban cause they looked almost alike and cause we played in the same team and he was a striker and scored so many goals...will never forget this croatian team!!!

In the end yeah, but in 60's twice 2nd on euro and once 4th in world... They were on fire. Then 70's were bad and after Tito died, Yugoslavia died also.
Watched him through my youth regularly, SUker was indeed a very special player, no hype needed, he was the real deal.
