    Just an Idea for coaxial speaker - an active desktop speaker. I think it would be interesting in multiple ways:
    1) you could cover the topic of bookshelf vs desktop (if there any difference at all, as this is something that bothers me in particular, but the data is quite limited)
    2) Take a look at a plate amps that are available for DIY
    3) Maybe it makes sense not to go with a plate, but have something like a passive pair with a wiim amp.
    Thank you for your work and inspiration!

    Those Dayton Audio Opal 1 speakers look amazing. I went immediately to their website and there's no user reviews yet. I did notice that the sensitivity is low, but I'm guessing by their power rating it's advised to have 200-watts per channel which I know these days comes fairly modest in price in quite a few amps. I look forward to your review. Being familiar with Dayton's resources and penchant for very reasonably priced high-quality drivers I am excited over this speaker.

      Big power numbers are pretty easy to achieve on the spec sheet but real world is a different story. The Epipue driver in that is not your typical woofer, small surface area, stiff but heavy cone material, massive surround, and advanced motor structure mean you are probably going to want to spend about as much on the amplification as the speakers to get them to come alive.

      I don’t remember what they were. They are using the new signature series woofers though. And if I remember correctly, those ones were self powered. I’ll have to see if I can find out and get back to you. Next year you should come. We can walk the show together.

  • @hermangaviria690

    The opals look very interesting and promising. Now here is a question, which tweeter do you think would be best for home theater, the Dayton Audio DC28F-8 or the Dayton Audio RST28F-4, here we're talking about for both L R and center channels. I was originally thinking about using ribbons, but then backed down because of cost and also durability, plus maybe output ?

      @@Toid someone told me about making sure that I used Drivers which were compatible with one another. How can I even tell (aside from the Frequency response giving good room at x-over points?). I'm planning on doing 3way speakers with the RST28F-4 (after your advice) as the tweeter, Dayton Audio RS100-8 as the mid, and the Dayton Audio SIG180-4 as the woofer. Do you think these are good picks for a good 3way speaker for both L R and Center channels ?

    • @Toid
      @Toid  2 місяці тому

      @@hermangaviria690 this would be a better question to ask on the forum www.toidsdiyaudio.com/forums I would need a little bit more detail such as crossover points, etc. But what I would say is if you have not designed your own speaker before then I would absolutely not do a three-way. It is infinitely harder for beginner to design a proper three-way crossover. It would make more sense to start with a two-way. Either way though, you’re gonna want to make sure you have the decent measurement equipment. Proper measurements are gonna make all the difference in the world with the crossover design.

    • @hermangaviria690
      @hermangaviria690 2 місяці тому +1

      @@Toid Yea lol, I actually just built a 3 way, sounds amazing, I keep on forgetting about the forum. But don't worry I've worked my way up from a 2way, and this 3way came out amazing!! Given it was my first 3 way but the results were absolutely fantastic. I'm just making sure I choose the right drivers for my "final" build for the home theater (living room).
      The 3ways I just built use a DC28F, PC108, and SIG 150, ported tuned at around 50hz with a modeled f3 of 44hz. Internal volume of 18liters. I only finished them like a week ago so I haven't taken the time to make some measurements because they just sound so good.
      Also I have all the equipment, trust I've been working hard at learning everything there is to know about building speakers even though I'm a beginner.

  • @PhillioDoede

    No new kits from Dayton Audio / Parts Express is pretty disappointing, a finished speaker is a ok idea but I think it should be offered as a kit first and foremost. They have been rolling out some pretty impressive drivers over the last few years but their kits are looking pretty stale. Looking forward to the SB Acoustics coaxial though, maybe something to take on the KEF R3 / R5?
    Also, pretty sure its Mad-"A"-sound, not "Madi". As in Madison WI where they are located.

  • @mikets42
    @mikets42 2 місяці тому

    SB Acoustics concentric does not look like group time-aligned. You may make it time-aligned by adding some latency to midrange (like JBL in their passive line sources) - but that's not trivial.

    • @Toid
      @Toid  2 місяці тому

      According to who I spoke to it is. It was also stated as being time aligned in an audioXpress right up. I haven’t personally tested that. But if I get some for the channel, that would be something I would look at. audioxpress.com/news/sb-acoustics-new-7-5-mt19cp-8-satori-coaxial-driver-expands-high-quality-options-for-speaker-designers

      Yeah. There’s a reason I used two of those Epique woofers in my Epic HiFi build. The good news, is those speakers can handle a lot of power. The bad news, you might want a lot of power. When I review them I’ll test them with multiple amplifiers to find out.
